OPEN COURSE AQ5 D01 ORNAMENTAL FISH CULTURE GENERAL INTRODUCTION An aquarium is a marvelous piece of nature in an enclosed space, gathering the attraction of every human being. It is an amazing window to the fascinating underwater world. The term ‘aquarium’is a derivative of two words in Latin, i.e aqua denoting ‘water’ and arium or orium indicating ‘compartment’. Philip Henry Gosse, an English naturalist, was the first person to actually use the word "aquarium", in 1854 in his book The Aquarium: An Unveiling of the Wonders of the Deep Sea. In this book, Gosse primarily discussed saltwater aquaria. Aquarium or ornamental fish keeping has grown from the status of a mere hobby to a global industry capable of generating international exchequer at considerable levels. History shows that Romans have kept aquaria (plural for ‘aquarium’) since 2500 B.C and Chinese in 1278-960 B.C. But they used aquaria primarily for rearing and fattening of food fishes. Chinese developed the art of selective breeding in carp and goldfish, probably the best known animal for an aquarium. Ancient Egyptians were probably the first to keep the fish for ornamental purpose. World’s first public aquarium was established in Regents Park in London in 1853. Earlier only coldwater fishes were kept as pets as there was no practical system of heating which is required for tropical freshwater fish. The invention of electricity opened a vast scope of development in aquarium keeping. The ease of quick transportation and facilities for carting in temperature controlled packaging has broadened the horizon for this hobby. -

Introduction In the freshwater aquarium, stingrays are among the most desired of unusual pets. Although a couple species have been commercially available for some time, they remain relatively uncommon in home aquariums. They are often avoided by aquarists due to their reputation for being fragile and difficult to maintain. As with many fishes that share this reputation, it is partly undeserved. A healthy ray is a robust animal, and problems are often due to lack of a proper understanding of care requirements. In the last few years many more species have been exported from South America on a regular basis. As a result, many are just recently being captive bred for the first time. These advances will be making additional species of freshwater stingray increasingly available in the near future. The EcoSystem Aquarium Revisited by Mike Paletta (Aquarium Frontiers On-line, Dec. 1997 feature) One way I judge how an article has been received is by how many letters or phone calls I get about it. Judging by the number of requests for more information on the Ecosystem Aquarium Filtration method, developed by Leng Sy, that I have received since writing articles in both Aquarium Fish Magazine (November 1997) and SeaScope (Fall 1997), I really struck a nerve. There are probably a number of reasons for this, but perhaps the biggest is the simplicity of the system itself and the little amount of maintenance that is required. I have experimented with virtually every system available, with my goal being to achieve the most successful reef tank possible with the least of amount of work to maintain it. Like most reefkeepers, I would rather spend my time looking at my tank than working on it. For this reason, the Ecosystem Aquarium method is quite appealing. It produces a successful tank that needs much less equipment to set it up and less effort to maintain it relative to most of the systems I have seen. For this reason I took another trip to Southern California to assess how well the system was working at the six month mark. For those of you not familiar with the Ecosystem Aquarium method, more detailed accounts can be found in the references mentioned above. But, let me try and bring everyone up to speed here with a brief description of how the system works. Like most methods of reef filtration this method starts off in a similar manner. -

In recent years, it has become increasingly clear there is substantial overlap in the shared goals for environmental and socioeconomic benefits between commercial stakeholders, the academic/conservation community, and zoos and public aquariums. Leaders in these three groups convened at Aquarama to discuss shared goals, shared challenges, and how a harmonized strategy may yield significant benefits to all. In the not too distant past, these three groups would not necessarily have viewed the others as partners; in fact, a certain degree of reservation towards each other was not uncommon. The sincere commitment to collaboration that took place at the Singapore meeting was, itself, a great step forward. The key perspectives of the three groups at this point can be described through the following examples: • Industry: Dr. Gerald Bassleer, President of Ornamental Fish International (OFI), expressed eagerness for trade members to support research on the industry. -

Water Quality in the Freshwater Aquarium Curriculum for Science, Biology or Chemistry classes – (Grades 7-9) Lesson objectives: Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the chemistry involved in maintaining proper water quality in a freshwater aquarium, and how water quality affects the life that exists within, from micro to macro organisms. Materials: aquarium, filter system, aquarium gravel, aquatic plants, tropical fish, tap water conditioner, fish food, thermometer, water test kit or test strips to measure: Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Acid/Base balance (pH), Alkalinity, Hardness. Introduction: Aquarium water quality is an interaction between many different chemicals in the water that are produced by the aquatic organisms and influence their health. Without clean water, the fish will be stressed and more susceptible to diseases and parasites. This curriculum will explain why we test the various water chemistry characteristics and what the test results mean for the health of the aquarium inhabitants. Chlorine and Chloramine: Chlorine and chloramine are used by water municipalities to make the tap water supply safe for human consumption. These compounds are extremely toxic to aquatic organisms and no amount can be tolerated within an aquarium. They cause gill irritation and damage which prevents fish from breathing (absorbing oxygen from the water). Add water conditioner (sodium thiosulfate) to tap water whenever adding it to an aquarium. Ammonia: Ammonia is produced by heterotrophic bacteria that live in the aquarium and breakdown organic material in the aquarium (dead fish or plants, uneaten food, fish feces). Ammonia can become toxic very quickly if allowed to accumulate. The higher the pH and temperature of the water, the more toxic ammonia becomes.
