Newsletter No. 75 Special Edition February 2010 16 January 2010 Investiture Ceremony An Investiture ceremony was held during Holy Mass celebrated by Mgr Lawrence Gatt, Conventual Chaplain Grand Cross ad Honorem, at the Oratory, St John's Co-Cathedral, in Valletta at 16.30hrs. The ceremony was presided over by HE Dr Philip Farrugia Randon, President of the Maltese Association. The members to be invested processed to the Oratory under the guidance of the Chancellor, Marchesino Daniel Gera de Petri Testaferrata, and took their seats. All the other members present, processed from the sacristy in inverse order of rank, led by the Standard-Bearer of the Association. The Chancellor read the brevet issued by the Grand Chancery, and Mgr Lawrence Gatt blessed the insignia. - 2 - Their Excellencies Frá John Critien, Frá Richard Cheffins and Frá Richard Divall also participated in the ceremony. After the sermon, the Veni Creator Spiritus was sung and the President conferred the insignia on behalf of the Prince and Grand Master, HMEH Frá Matthew Festing. The Imperialist Snake in Nicaragua’s Garden of Eden Wears Holy Vestments According to Holy Scripture, the devil wears many disguises and tells convincing lies.i In Nicaragua, the imperialist snake wears the vestments of cardinals, bishops and priests, and it foments discontent amongst the faithful from the pulpit with boldface lies that incite riotous protests against its democratically elected government, and it protects foreign funded paramilitary troops and organized criminals in their destruction of public buildings and infrastructure. This unholy and unjust violence occurs in once peaceful Nicaragua, a literal Garden of Eden, where small and medium sized farms produce 90 percent of all staple foods consumed. To banish this snake, it is necessary to identify its master; what its objectives are; how it got into the garden; and how it sustains itself. The snake’s name is Opus Dei. Josemaría Escrivá, a priest and ardent fan of the murderous U.S. installed iiright-wing military dictator Francisco Franco (1939-1975), founded Opus Dei in Spain in 1928iii. CFN Exclusive Interview with “Dictator Pope” Author Henry Sire Last year, anno Domini 2017, was truly historic in many ways. Although it did not meet the expectations of some in regard to apocalyptic signs, the Fatima Centenary featured a host of significant happenings in the Church and the world, in general. Dubbed “a year of disaster” by CNBC, 2017 witnessed a variety of devastating natural disasters across the globe: flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, mudslides, and wildfires, to name a few. For the Church, it could appropriately be styled the “year of resistance” – that is, of resisting Pope Francis “to the face” (Gal. 2:11). The first notable example that comes to mind is the publication of George Neumayr’s The Political Pope (May 2017), a penetrating exposé of Jorge Mario Bergoglio based largely on direct quotes from the man himself, as noted in my review of the book. A few months later (Sept. 24, 2017), the famous Correctio filialis (“filial correction”) was made public, a respectful but firm indictment “on account of the propagation of heresies effected by the apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia and by other words, deeds and omissions” of Pope Francis. This was followed, in turn, by a similar initiative (Dec. 12, 2017): “Pledge of Fidelity: Faithful to True Doctrine, Not to Erring Pastors”. Perhaps the most intriguing manifestation of resistance, however, appeared in between the Correctio filialis and Pledge of Fidelity in the form of an e-book entitled The Dictator Pope (Nov. 2017). The mysterious author, writing under the pen name “Marcantonio Colonna” (after the famous Italian admiral who led the papal fleet in the Battle of Lepanto), revealed precious few personal details.

JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA – A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE ORDER OF MALTA INTRODUCTION: HOSPITALLERS Following thirteen years of excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority, a thousand-year-old structure – once a hospital in Jerusalem – will be open to the public; part of it seems earmarked to serve as a restaurant. 1 In Syria, as the civil war rages on, reports and footage have been emerging of explosions in and around Crac des Chevaliers castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2 During the interwar period (1923–1943), the Italian colonial authorities in the Dodecanese engaged in a wide-ranging series of projects to restore – and in some instances redesign – several buildings on Rhodes, in an attempt to recreate the late medieval/Renaissance lore of the island. 3 Between 2008 and 2013, the European Regional Development Fund provided the financial support necessary for Malta to undertake a large-scale restoration of several kilometres of fortifications, with the aim of not only preserving these structures but also enhancing Malta’s economic and social well- -being.4 Since 1999, the Sainte Fleur Pavilion in the Antananarivo University Hospital Centre in Madagascar has been helping mothers to give birth safely and assisting infants through care and research. 5 What binds together these seemingly disparate, geographically-scattered buildings, all with their stories of hope and despair? All of them – a hospital in Jerusalem, a castle in Syria, structures on Rhodes, fortifications on Malta, and yet another hospital, this time in Madagascar – attest to the constant (but evolving) mission of the Order of Malta “to Serve the Poor and Defend the Faith” over several centuries.

Below, please find the full English text of the Pope's remarks. Dear Brothers and Sisters! I am happy to welcome and to greet each one of you, Knights and Dames, chaplains and volunteers, of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. I greet in a special way the Grand Master, His Most Eminent Highness Fra’ Matthew Festing, and I thank him for his kind words addressed to me in the name of all of you; I also thank you for the gift you wished to offer me, which I will dedicate to a work of charity. My affectionate thoughts go to the Cardinals and to my brother bishops and priests, in particular to my Secretary of State, who has just presided at the Eucharist, and to Cardinal Paolo Sardi, Patron of the Order, whom I thank for the care with which he strives to strengthen the special bond that joins you to the Catholic Church and most particularly to the Holy See. With gratitude, I greet Archbishop Angelo Acerbi, your Prelate. A final word of greeting goes to the diplomats and to all the high dignitaries and authorities who are present. The occasion that brings us together is the ninth centenary of the solemn privilege Pie Postulatio Voluntatis of 15 February 1113, by which Pope Paschal II placed the newly created “hospitaller fraternity” of Jerusalem, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, under the protection of the Church, and gave it sovereign status, constituting it as an Order in church law, with the faculty freely to elect its superiors without interference from other lay or religious authorities.

THE CONFRONTATION Order of Malta: Becciu stops the German “coup” ECCLESIA 19-09-2020 Andrea Zambrano “I invite you to overcome any feeling of supremacy or revenge.” The warning that the Vatican has given to the present management of the Order of Malta is condensed in these sparse but unequivocal words. It is a warning that has the face of Cardinal Angelo Becciu. He is the author of the letter written in July by which he as the Pope’s special delegate essentially stopped the aims of the German faction within the Order, which was proceeding without the necessary respect for the statutes in order to give way to the succession of leadership of the Knights of St. John after the death of the Grand Master, Fra Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto. The letter, which until now had remained secret within a confidential circle of high dignitaries but which The Compass has now received (read it here), reveals how the thousand-year-old Order is substantially at a crossroads: either remain a religious order faithful to its origins, or lose its nature to become a sort of “non-profit organization” that – despite being a sovereign body in international law – would move away from its vocation summarized in its motto Tuitio Fidei, Obsequium Pauperum but also above all away from obedience to the Church. Contrary to the interpretations that some have given recently, at least since 2017, when the Pope forced Fra Matthew Festing to resign as Grand Master because of his clash with then-Grand Chancellor Albrecht von Boeselager (in photo) over contraceptives being distributed in humanitarian aid packages, what is taking place in the Sovereign Order of Malta is not an internal struggle between the German group of progressives and conservatives from North America and Italy (who make up about 2/3 of the members of the Order).
