The Colonial Golf Clubs of Ceylon When the colonial powers governed what was then called Ceylon, they selected the finest courses upon which to lay their golf course. Moreover, this journey is designed not just about golf, but more so about its legacy as well as the culture of Sri Lanka. Day 1 Airport - Colombo: About 1 Hour Drive Tintagel At the airport you will be greeted by your chauffeur guide who will take you into the capital city of Colombo. Once at the comforts of your boutique hotel, relax and recover from any jet lag atyou individually designed suite. You will soon learn that this property was the very mansion where three of Sri Lanka’s political leaders lived. After settling in, it is time to explore the city of Colombo. Visit some interesting features such as the old city of Fort, the main markets of Pettah, the Hindu Temple at Sea Street, the Dutch Church at Wolfendal, the historic Davatagaha Mosque, the Colombo Museum amongst others. Another option is to indulge in some shopping whether it is value for money clothes or impressive antiques. Later on in the day we would recommend dropping by the Checkerboard at the Galle Face Hotel for drinks while watching a picturesque sunset over the Indian Ocean. Day 2 Colombo – Victoria Golf Course & Resort: About 5 Hours Drive Clingendael Begin by teeing off on the Colombo golf course, which is over 130 years old, making it the second oldest Royal golf club outside the United Kingdom. Alternatively, if you wish to practice, this is the only course that offers a modern driving range. Why not grab a lunch on the colonial style Veranda which is the venue where many a golfing story is related and the achievements and disappointments of golfers dreams are discussed vigorously and enthusiastically. Jetwing Travels | [email protected] | page 1 www.jetwingtravels.com After lunch set off to experience the inland delights of Sri Lanka. Over the next few nights, your home away from home will be at the boutique hotel Clingendael, which is distinguished by its luxury, privacy, spectacular vistas and fine dining. Moreover, Clingendael’s individually themed suites beckon one to relive the colonial atmosphere of ultimate comfort and service of glorious bygone days. Day 3 Victoria Golf Course & Resort Clingendael Step out to the course and wander down fairways lined by majestic mara rain trees. During your game over this 18 hole course, don’t be surprised if just two or three white egrets swoop across the landscape of the magnificent Knuckles mountain range broken by the placid Victoria reservoir. The very course was designed by the British Golf Architects - Donald Steel & Co who have taken full advantage of the terrain incorporating undulating hillside, planted coconut and majestic Jak forests. For the avid golfers you will be happy to know that this course was planted with imported Bermuda grass. Day 4 Victoria Golf Course & Resort - Kandy - Victoria Golf Course & Resort : About 2 Hours Drive Clingendael Take a short drive to the spiritual Kandy, surrounded by greenery and the great Mahaweli River. Kandy is also well known as the centre of Buddhism. Become acquainted with the city of Kandy, paying your respects to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses Sri Lanka’s most sacred relic, a tooth of the Lord Buddha. The Temple itself Jetwing Travels | [email protected] | page 2 www.jetwingtravels.com dates from the 16th century and is entered via 2 doors showing mythical beasts. Do steal some time in the day to stroll through the Royal Peradeniya Botanical Gardens of over 60 hectares. Prior to the arrival of the British in Sri Lanka his was a royal park and it is today the largest botanical garden in the nation. There is a fine collection of orchids and a stately avenue of royal palms that were planted in 1905. If you would like your chauffeur guide we will help you organize a picnic lunch at the gardens. Back at the Victoria golf course & resort savour an evening in the breeze whilst playing a round of golf. You will find the very design of the course quite tricky as at time you will be playing from one hill onto another. Day 5 Victoria Golf Course & Resort - Dickoya: About 4 Hours Drive Governor’s Mansion From Kandy ascend to the cooler mountains. Find yourself surrounded by rolling green hills and clear skies. Welcome to Dickoya, Sri Lanka's tea growing region. During the drive relish the endless views of tea carpeted valleys and the bright flash of female "tea pluckers" in their pimento, fuchsia and cerise saris. Arrive at an all- inclusive boutique hotel that is surrounded by a working tea plantation and relax. Day 6 Dickoya – Nuwara Eliya: About 4 Hours Drive Governor’s Mansion Jetwing Travels | [email protected] | page 3 www.jetwingtravels.com Take a picturesque drive past not one but two formidable waterfalls. Play a game at the Nuwara Eliya town’s 18- hole golf course. We suggest you break for lunch at the colonial member’s only Hill Club before returning for an afternoon game. You will realize that the abundant rainfall combined with sunshine, cold nights and misty mornings offers the perfect climate for producing high grown teas in Nuwara Eliya as well. With brick and stone-built houses, rose gardens and perfect lawns Nuwara Eliya in many ways resembles a 'small English village'. Day 7 Dickoya - Nuwara Eliya – Dickoya: About 4 Hours Drive Governor’s Mansion Begin the morning with a walking tour of the local tea plantation to learn more about the warm and refreshing drink. After lunch take a drive to Nuwara Eliya for an afternoon game. Watch out as the course is broken not just by rivers and streams but also by roadways. By walk through the Nuwara Golf Club House which has a gallery of artefacts you be able to visualize the times of the Raj. The club was founded very early on in 1889 as the planters themselves need some form of entertainment and lost no time in setting it up. Return to Dickoya for dinner. Day 8 Dickoya - Negombo: About 5 Hours Drive Governor’s Mansion Jetwing Travels | [email protected] | page 4 www.jetwingtravels.com Relish the drive past the tea carpeted mountains, along the meandering rivers, pass the rice paddy fields to the coast of Negombo. If you have spare time, your chauffeur guide will introduce you to some of Negombo’s curious sites such the Dutch churches, perhaps take a boat ride along the Dutch cannals or laze on the golden sands. Day 9 Negombo - Airport: About 20 Minutes Drive As all good things must come to an end, your chauffeur guide will comfortably take you to the air taxi or helicopter landing point. Next enjoy a bird’s eye view of our paradise island as you are whisked away to the international airport in time for your return flight. Alternatively, you could always soak up some sun on Sri Lanka’s pristine beaches such as Negombo.
