It is a great honour to represent your country. Whether it is at home or abroad, I was fortunate to tour most of the best cricketing nations around the world. Sri Lanka has always been one of the toughest places to succeed on the Test match calendar. Scoring runs or taking wickets in hot and humid conditions, takes immense powers of concentration and skill. The Sri Lankan’s have always been extremely difficult to beat on their own patch. I have the fond memories of performing in Colombo, because in 1982 I was lucky enough to play in Sri Lanka’s inaugural Test match. England managed to gain a victory in Colombo and I remember the tremendous reception we received and the outstanding hospitality of the local people. It will be fantastic to return to this exciting island and I look forward to linking up with my old England colleague and friend Allan Lamb once again. • The Colonial Golf Clubs of Ceylon
The Colonial Golf Clubs of Ceylon When the colonial powers governed what was then called Ceylon, they selected the finest courses upon which to lay their golf course. Moreover, this journey is designed not just about golf, but more so about its legacy as well as the culture of Sri Lanka. Day 1 Airport - Colombo: About 1 Hour Drive Tintagel At the airport you will be greeted by your chauffeur guide who will take you into the capital city of Colombo. Once at the comforts of your boutique hotel, relax and recover from any jet lag atyou individually designed suite. You will soon learn that this property was the very mansion where three of Sri Lanka’s political leaders lived. After settling in, it is time to explore the city of Colombo. Visit some interesting features such as the old city of Fort, the main markets of Pettah, the Hindu Temple at Sea Street, the Dutch Church at Wolfendal, the historic Davatagaha Mosque, the Colombo Museum amongst others. Another option is to indulge in some shopping whether it is value for money clothes or impressive antiques. Later on in the day we would recommend dropping by the Checkerboard at the Galle Face Hotel for drinks while watching a picturesque sunset over the Indian Ocean. Day 2 Colombo – Victoria Golf Course & Resort: About 5 Hours Drive Clingendael Begin by teeing off on the Colombo golf course, which is over 130 years old, making it the second oldest Royal golf club outside the United Kingdom. Alternatively, if you wish to practice, this is the only course that offers a modern driving range.
