www.ocsj.org 7 The OCSJ Follows the Leave No Trace Principles. Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. The Seven Principles • Plan Ahead and Prepare • Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces • Dispose of Waste Properly • Leave What You Find • Respect Wildlife • Be Considerate of Other Visitors • Minimize Campfire Impacts Volunteer Opportunities The Club offers all members an opportunity to be a part of, or to create their own outdoor experience or activity. All activities are led by volunteer members. NO volunteers, NO activities. It’s that simple! You can make a difference. Your volunteer involvement in Club activities is unique and special contributions that play a valuable role in YOUR Club. PLAN AND LEAD AN ACTIVITY. HELP TO MAINTAIN THE TRAIL. July 29 Slow & Steady Backpack in PA - 2 nights, 1 swimming hole, 20 miles Monday Beginner and experienced backpackers are invited to join us for a week day summer backpack 09:00 AM trip on the . The campsites are popular, and we may miss some of the crowds by going during the week. Weather may be very hot so we will start early in the day to avoid the heat. (Rain date will be in early September.) We will meet in Bethel, PA at 9 AM, shuttle to the AT at PA 183, and then shuttle to the starting place, at Swatara Gap (30 minutes away). Bad weather (heavy rain or super hot weather) will cancel or postpone this trip. Backpackers need sleeping gear for 70 degree weather. The plans are to hike day 1 from Swatara Gap (8 miles with 1000 foot elevation gain) to the William Penn Shelter (8 miles) (privy, campsites and water), day 2 - rise by 6 AM and leave camp by 8 AM, backpack 10 miles to Hertlein campsite, set up our tents or hammocks, swim (optional), hang bear bags & dig cat holes (practice makes perfect), and the next day, hike out 3.5 miles to our cars, then shuttle back to the get the cars at PA 72. Beginners are welcome, as long as they have recent 6 to 8 mile hiking experience, and discuss their gear and experience with the leader first. Day 1 we ascend 1000 feet (that is a lot for many people) and the trail is very rocky in many parts. Go slow and steady, be in good health, hydrate well the day before, skip the caffeine, don’t

10 www.ocsj.org wear new clothes or shoes, and start early in the day, and all is possible. Day 2 & 3 have little hills up & down, lots of rocks, and repeat. (FYI - the photo is from Maine, not PA.) All participants should send their email address to the leader at annwolf103 at gmail.com.
