Y’know, this time last year I was a voracious and wide-eyed MWF punter, making my way from event to signing to pre-keynote tipple to bookshop, undulating through the warm crowd, tome in hand. In 2018 I’m humbled to be newly placed in a curatorial position, setting the traditional Festival experience on a light yet deliberate art-kook tilt. Along with the talks, ideas and sharing of passions you’ve come to know and love from authors at MWF we’re expanding the program to include theatre, performance, music, art, dance workouts and…an Animal Church. Obviously. When we talk about matters of life and death as a theme we’re exploring all the rich, important motifs that spring to mind under such an emotional umbrella. Survival, fluidity, impermanence, joy, grief, loss, love, determination. And empathy. If there’s any one thing I might hope for you to discover somewhere in our ten-day collection of hearts, warriors, song and words, it’s empathy. Allow yourself to be curious, allow yourself to explore, and allow yourself to listen. There’s a wealth of human experience on offer for you to share and connect with. Oh, and if you spot me around – I’m always up for a hug.
