As I stared up at the ornately painted dome 160 feet above me, the muscles in my neck loosened—and my eyes widened in surprise at what they saw. This historical amnesia ignores America’s long history of discomfort with religious traditions that feel “foreign” to CONTENTS the majority culture during particular periods in the country’s development. Despite Spring 2010 the intentions of the country’s founders to establish a nation that afforded every in- dividual the right to practice their religion free from fear of persecution by the state, reality all too often has shown us a very different picture. One needs only to scratch the President’s Message p. 2 surface of the historical record to reveal evidence of Islamophobia long before 9/11, or evidence of prejudice against adherents of “other” faiths (including Catholicism; The Middle East as Seen see p. 8) seen as not being native to the United States.
