Parker Prayer Letter ParkerParker PrayerPrayer LetterLetter July 2017 Serving with MAF in Uganda Six months into our new placement in Uganda and we are gradually getting more settled into the work and life here. The Pilot’s view Since we last wrote Andrew has completed all the necessary steps to become a fully operational MAF Uganda pilot! Horray! He’s been particularly busy over the last few months because a lot of other families have been on furlough in their home countries. Regular flights take Andrew across the border into the DRC and into South Sudan, as well as up into the north eastern Karamoja area of Uganda, with our regular customers involved in missionary work, healthcare, education and development work. There is a particular need for these types of work in the growing refugee camps in the north of Uganda, where hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have fled from their war torn homeland. __________________ Family Life ‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not Esther has just completed Primary School! She will be moving up to perceive it? Secondary School at Heritage International School. She enjoyed her I am making a way in the wilderness final terms of Primary School, particularly participating in the and streams in the wasteland.’ Junior Choir and also in a school production of the musical “Beauty Isaiah 43:19 and The Beast”. The show was presented in a most professional way. Sitting in Juba a year ago, doing school in a small room with __________________ just her brother and her Mum in attendance, we could not have imagined such an opportunity for Esther. It is exciting for us to have so many new experiences for the children in Kampala. Sadly for Esther, the new friends she has made at school here will be moving to different secondary schools. We would value prayers for new and long-lasting friendships for Esther, as she struggles again with a constant cycle of saying farewell to good friends. However, we have seen God’s faithfulness as Esther has been able to reconnect with a close friend from Juba, who now lives in Arua in the north of Uganda. Recently Esther flew up to Arua on a MAF plane without us to stay a whole week with her friend! She took another MAF flight back down to Kampala and happily, it happened to be a flight Andrew was flying on his return from South Sudan! Ben is enjoying the social side of school and has thrown himself into life here with his usual energy and enthusiasm. The academic side Esther on her way home from can sometimes be more challenging. We value prayers for good Arua with captain dad teachers for Ben who can encourage and guide him well. Joel has taken a while to adapt to school, but he is gradually finding his feet. We are praying that he too will make good friends and feel more at home in the school environment, which can sometimes be a cultural challenge where most of his classmates are Ugandan and have not had to transition the way Joel has. At home, Liz has been busy adapting to the new routine of driving the children to school and discovering which activities she can get involved with. Liz is looking for work where she can use her teaching skills part time. As yet, the way forward is unclear. Please would you pray with us that God opens up a new way for Liz to use her experience and professional skills which could serve the community in Kampala and balance with caring for the family? In the meantime, we are enjoying the long school “summer” holidays! We are very much looking forward to the visit of Liz’s parents at the end of July! After term restarts, we also have the Celebrating Liz’s baptism excitement of the visit of our great friend, Wendy, from Burscough, who will join us for a week in September! • TH E ORNEY Flying in Chad
Volume 12 - Issue E May 2016 ORNEY Dave: www.theforneyflyer.blogspot.com Joy: www.joyforney.org FIELD REPORT: TH LYER 2 Dave,F Joy, Britt, Hannah, Hudson, Tanner, Tyler, and Gift EAST AFRICA Flying in Chad MAF flies to thousands of locations in dozens of countries throughout the world. In fact, about every three minutes an MAF aircraft is taking off or landing somewhere at the ‘ends of the earth,’ bringing help and hope to people in some of the hardest-to-reach places. Chad is one such 1 2 place—a vast country with some of the most desolate and 4 3 inhospitable terrain on the planet. The needs in Chad are as immense and dynamic as the ever-changing, sun-scorched Saharan sands, which cover much of the country. Recently, the MAF Chad Program sent their Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft down here to Uganda for a major avionics (radio instruments) upgrade—a huge job that will take several months to complete. So in the meantime the MAF Uganda Program agreed to send one of our Caravans up to Chad, to help ‘fill the gap’ until theirs returns. Problem solved, right? Wrong. In order to legally fly a Ugandan-registered aircraft, a pilot must have a Ugandan license. That’s where I came in. I was asked to spend three weeks as a ‘relief pilot’ in Chad, where I got to do some very strategic and exciting flights to some very remote locations. I’ve been to many countries in the world, but this was certainly some of the most awe- inspiring, uninhabitable terrain that I’ve ever seen or flown over, anywhere.

  • Life in Lockdown
LIFE IN LOCKDOWN Dear friends, Good morning from Kampala. We know many of you in different countries throughout the world have experienced a unique six months as governments have tried to control the spread of COVID 19. We have waited and waited in sending this update, to try and bring you all some news on where things are going in Uganda, but in theory at least we are still in lockdown. Yes, you can wear a mask and drink a Having a hard life working from home smoothie! (office in a box) The blessings of a gas regulator. On the box it says "Blessed in the nation Fathers day in lockdown whose God is the Lord...." Uganda initially implemented a very strict lockdown with all public and private transport closed, markets and arcades restricted, international travel forbidden and schools and churches closed. While most workplaces were not formally closed the lack of transport meant that many people couldn't attend work. In theory we are still in semi-lockdown, not that you would really notice, the only things that now affect us are curfew, Geoff's working in the hangar being restricted to four days a week (sometimes), school being conducted over the internet, and not being able to return to the UK. However the situation for MAF Uganda is still difficult, with flying being restricted to cargo only and cross border flights requiring complex permissions. The quiet roads of the full lockdown are now as busy and polluted as before. The taxis (mini vans which can carry up to 14 people normally) have resumed service, but with social distancing (half the number of passengers = twice the price).
