Total of 66 species belonging to 22 families were identified after analyzing the samples collected seasonally from the depths ranging between 1 and 30 m between 2007- 2008. According to the data gathered from the literature, it was determined that one species (Bathyporeia elegans Watkin, 1938) was a new record for the Turkish seas and 37 species for the Marmara Sea. In the Bandırma Gulf, of the ecological variables of the environment temperature was determined to range between 6.6-27°C, salinity between 21.32-36.03 psu, dissolved oxygen between 4.04-11.26 mg l-1and pH between 8.00-8.38. In the Erdek Gulf, temperature ranged between 6.7 and 27°C, salinity between 21.93-35.54‰, dissolved oxygen between 3.67-13.26 mg l-1and pH between 8.06-8.36. In the surface sediment at the sampling stations of the Bandırma Gulf, total organic carbon values were between 0.07-4.42%, total calcium carbonate between 0.88-84.82%, total phosphorus between 609-12740 μg g-1 and mud percentage between 1.38-79.93%.

Original specimens and type localities of early described polychaete species (Annelida) from Norway, with particular attention to species described by O.F. Müller and M. Sars. Memoirs of Museum Victoria 71: 217–236. Early descriptions of species from Norwegian waters are reviewed, with a focus on the basic requirements for re- assessing their characteristics, in particular, by clarifying the status of the original material and locating sampling sites. A large number of polychaete species from the North Atlantic were described in the early period of zoological studies in the 18th and 19th centuries.

HUTCHINGS2 1Animal Evolution & Biodiversity, Ruhr-Universität, 44780 Bochum, Germany. E-mail: [email protected] 2 The Australian Museum, Marine Invertebrates, 6 College Street, NSW 2010, Sydney, Australia 3Corresponding author: Abstract During taxonomic studies on the Trichobranchidae housed at the Australian Museum, Sydney morphological characters of specimens were found to serve taxonomists on four taxonomic levels – family, genus, species and specimen level. The number of neuropodial uncini per torus and abdominal segments, long considered holding information for species determination, proved to be highly variable within species. Characters found to be consistent within species were e.g., the position of nephridial papillae, shape of branchiae and chaetae, and the development of anterior segments and lateral lappets. Also, staining in methyl green resulted in a clear pattern without intraspecific variability in most cases and is since considered a helpful tool for identification of Trichobranchidae. In this study an overview of morphological characters of Trichobranchidae and their information for taxonomy is given based on the trichobranchid collection of the Australian Museum. Additionally, description of a new species Terebellides jitu sp. nov., formerly treated as a variation of Terebellides narribri, is given. The description of T. narribri is revised. Key words: Southern hemisphere, Annelida, Terebellida, Terebellides jitu sp. nov., Terebellides narribri Introduction Trichobranchidae are common polychaetes in shallow and deep waters (Hutchings 2000).

Each oocyte can attach to the germinal epithelium by a vegetally situated stalk and resides in the ovarian lumen Accepted for publication: without being surrounded by follicle cells. In the ovary, oocytes arrest at 26 September 2000 prophase I of meiosis and contain a hypertrophied nucleus ('germinal vesicle') that often possesses multiple nucleoli. Intraovarian growth apparently involves an autosynthetic mode of yolk formation in most nemerteans and generates oocytes that measure ~60 Jim to 1 mm. When fully developed, oocytes can be discharged through a short gonoduct and are either spawned freely or deposited within egg cases. In most species, oocytes released from the ovary possess extracellular coats and resume maturation by undergoing germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD).

  • Environmental Correlates with Amphipod Distribution in a Scottish Sea Loch
Cah. Biol. Mar. (1989),30 : 243-258 Roscoff Environmental correlates with amphipod distribution in a Scottish sea loch M.R. Robertson, S.J. Hall & A. Eleftheriou DAFS Marine Laboratory, PO Box 1° l, Victoria Road Aberdeen AB9 8 DB. Scotland. Abstract : Over the period 1969 to 1980, 34 stations (both inter and subtidal) were visited in Loch Ewe, a fjordic sea loch on the west coast of Scotland. Amphipod densities were determined along with sediment parti cie size and levels of organic carbon and chlorophyll a. Multivariate analysis of the se data indicates that depth and sediment organic carbon levels are the major determinants of amphipod assemblages in the loch, in contrast to previous stu dies which have variously implicated temperature, sediment granulometry and food availability. INTRODUCTION The factors which determine the distribution of amphipods, a dominant component of intertidal and shallow subtidal habitats, have been discussed by a number of authors.
