He completed the studies of analysis, counterpoint, harmony and fugue with René Oberson at the Music Academy of Fribourg, as well as piano, violin and singing. He continued his studies in Geneva (composition with Prof. Eric Gaudibert, conducting with Prof. Liang-Sheng Chen), while following also courses of ancient music and musicology. He received a prize of the Kiefer-Hablitzel Foundation (Association of Swiss Musicians). Counsels and courses with, among others, Klaus Huber, Luis de Pablo, Heinz Holliger, Arvo Pärt, Paul Méfano. His Symphony for chamber orchestra won in 1993 the 1st Prize and Public Prize of the 1st Competition for young composers, organized by the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. He has been laureate of several foundations, and finalist of, among others, the European Competition of Choral Composition (Amiens, France). His work « Ombre » (« Shadow ») for orchestra, won 1998 the prize of the prestigious Donaueschinger Musiktage, given for the first time (among the members of the Jury: Wolfgang Rihm, Sylvain Cambreling, Gérard Grisey, Christian Wolff). He is also honoured in 2000 with a contribution ad personam from the UBS Kulturstiftung for his « remarkable partaking to the musical life in Switzerland and abroad ». First compositions in 1982. He receives numerous orders, as much from the interpreters as from concert associations, festivals, broadcasting and foundations. -

After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BROTHERS IN ARMS AND ART: AN EXPLORATION OF THE HISTORICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRUMPET AND PERCUSSION, FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO THE RECITAL HALL Brent Madsen, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2014 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Chris Gekker, University of Maryland School of Music My dissertation recitals focus on music written or arranged for trumpet and percussion instruments. The three programs are conceived in such a way that each recital stands on its own as a successful concert. Each program begins with a piece of early music, the oldest of which is from the 13th century. In an attempt to highlight the rich history of music for the trumpet and kettledrum, I have included fanfare works for each recital. The fanfares I have selected are written by some of the most notable composers in history, such as Richard Wagner, Claudio Monteverdi, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In contrast to these brilliant fanfares, the first half of each recital includes a song, originally written for voice and piano, arranged for muted trumpet and marimba. It is my hope that the inclusion of these songs in my programs will help expand the recital repertoire for trumpeters to include these and other such works. The first half of each recital ends with a lengthy modern work for trumpet and percussion. My programs include two premieres, one of which is a work for trumpet and programmed drums composed by myself. The modern works featured on my programs often emphasize the wide range of tonal colors available to both percussionists and trumpeters. Each recital will end with a jazz-oriented piece that will include improvisation. -

Beginning in 1939, the Concours International d’Exécution Musicale de Genève (CIEM; Geneva International Music Competition) is unique among international music competitions in its multidisciplinary approach. To date, fifteen works have been commissioned for clarinet for the years in which the clarinet was involved. The most well-known of these works is the unaccompanied work by Heinrich Sutermeister, Capriccio for Solo Clarinet in A, written in 1946 for the 1947 competition. This work is a staple in the unaccompanied clarinet repertoire. However, the other fourteen works commissioned for the competition are little known and to date no document has been prepared that examines each of these works in the context of the competition and clarinet literature. While perhaps less notable, works were also commissioned for a sight reading portion of the competition for many of the years in which the clarinet was a discipline chosen for the competition, two of which were published.
