Management by International Music Network 278 Main Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 978-283-2883 ,__, BIOGRAPHIES,__, BRAD MEHLDAU JAZZ TRIO Brad Mehldau, Piano JorgeRossy, Drums Larry Grenadier,Bass Brad Mehldau, like many of his contemporaries, began his career with heavy classical training, long before he was exposed to jazz. He started experimenting with the piano when he was just four and began taking lessons when he was six, continuing until he was fourteen. As a youngster be listened more to rock than jazz . Brad moved to New York city in 1988 where he worked with a variety of musicians over the next severa.l years and made several recordings as a sideman . During that period he began to develop his own style which he attributes to the influence of his musical peers, specifically bandleaders Peter Bernstein, Jessie Davis and David Sanchez as well as other musicians he worked with often - Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Perico Sambeat, Leon Parker, Avishai Cohen and Chris Potter, to name a few. In addition he met and played with his future trio mates, Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy in several projects. Brad's first major international exposure came as a member of the Joshua Redman Quartet, with which he recorded MoodSwingand toured the US and Europe for a year and a half. In 1995 Brad released his debut album as a leader for Warner Bros. Records, appropriately titled, Introducing Brad Mehldau. Of that recording the ChicagoTribune observed that it was" ... a recording that achieves its most vivid moments when Mehldau is playing original compositions. The elliptical lines, volatile rhythmic figures and unexpected bursts of color and dissonance ... prove that Mehldau writes as cleverly as he plays. The originality of these compositions is startling to behold." Brad's second Warner album, The Art Of The Trio, VolumeOne, was released in February 1997 to almost instant critical acclaim. At his Village Vanguard debut, coinciding with the release of the album, The New YorkTimes commented, "Mr. Mehldau, who spent most of the hour with eyes closed and head crooked into his chest like a sleeping bird, reached into the subconscious and took the songs at a run, rearranging all the accents of the melodies; his song-like improvisations took off from those jumbled rhythms." Brad 's classical training informs more than just his astonishing technique. Speaking of YoungWerther, a composition on Introducing, he observed: "That came about as a result of studying a lot of the contrapuntal aspects of classical music . I tried to get away from just a one-note melody and a chord under it, and tried to explore the relationships between several notes moving independently. The whole tune is based on four notes in different configurations. The idea of generating a whole composition from a small amount of thematic material is very alluring to me, and resulted from studying the compositions of great classical composers like Beethoven and Brahms . After completing the composition, I realized that J had unconsciously taken the four- note motif from a Brahms Piano Capriccio." With the release in early 1998 of his third Warner Bros. album (as a leader), Live At The VillageVanguard: The Art Of The Trio, Volume Two,"Brad Mehldau spent most of the year touring extensively throughout the US and Europe with his trio of Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy, while finding time to record with Willie Nelson and record and tour briefly once again with Joshua Redman. His next trio installment, released in September of '98 to great critical acclaim, was Songs:The Art Of The Trio, Volume Three. As the New Statesman of London cogently observed, "From moment to moment his playing suggests nearly every part of the jazz tradhion, as well as unsettling corners of twentieth century compositions, even rock-his new record, Songs: the Art of the Trio, Volume Three, includes surprisingly genuine covers of Nick Drake's 'River Man' and Radiohead's 'Exit Music (for a Film),' which comes out sounding like Beethoven." Stereophilesaid of this recording, "Brad Mehldau doesn't mercly conceptualize-he emotes with yearning melancholy and rapturous ecstasy. When he plays, embers glow, then burst into flame." ElegiacCycle. Brad's exploration of solopiano releasedin the spring of '99 inspiredTime Magazineto write,"Mehldau achievesan almost spiritual resonance, chords echoing like amens." The atmospheric and classically-infusedjazz of ElgiacCyde comprises nine beautifull.ymysterious and emotionallycomplex Mehldau-composedelegies. In Art Of The Trio 4: Back At The Vanguard,Brad revisits the trio configuration with his cohorts Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy. The album includes three Mehldau originals, "Nice Pass,""London Blues'' and a live version of "Sefmsucht" previously recorded in-studio on Songs: The Art Of The Trio, Volume Three. Another reprise from Songs, the both brooding and lively,"Exit Music (ForA Film)" by Radiohead, is even more intensely enjoyable than it was the first time armind. Three delightfully disquieting classicscomplete the albums seven compositions: "All The Things YouAre" (Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II), "I'll Be Seeing You" (Irving Kahal/Sammy Fain), and Miles Davis' "Solar." Places(Warner Bros. Records) is comprised of all original compositions by Brad, performed either solo or with his regular trio (Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy). The songs are all named for the cities in which they were written. Progression-Art of the Trio, Volume 5 continues the series of live recordings the trio has done at the Village Vanguard in New York. This is a double cd set with several Mehldau originals and more standards, including such seldom heard songs as "Cry Me A River,""Secret Love," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Largo,Brad's most recent release, represents a major departure from his previous albums. Produced by Jon Brion the album features Brad in a variety of settings besides his usual trio, including with brass, two basses and two drums, one drum, and often playing prepared pianos with the strings dampened with putty or otherwise altered in some way. Brad has had extensive exposure in films including his performance of the lead track from Art Of The Trio, Vol. J, "Blame It On My Youth" (Oscar Levant/Edward Heyman), featured in the film Eyes Wide Shut and its companion soundtrack on Warner, "Sunset", "Dream" in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and "Old Man" and "Still Crazy After All These Years,"in Space Cowboys.2001 saw the release of two French films he composed and performed the music to, Ma Femme et une Actrice and Un Ange en Danger, and is the subject of a French documentary entitled Jazz Collectio11:Brad Mehldau. Most recently his rendition of "Exit Music for a Film" can be heard in Unfaithful. Brad and Larry Grenadier appear in and can be heard in the soundtrack of the forthcoming Julia Roberts film, Mona Lisa Smile. In the case of this thesis, it was burglary, relocation, serious injury, marriage, and a death in the family. Disruptions also put extra demands on those surrounding the writer. I extend my deepest gratitude to the following people for, above all, their patience and support. To my supervisor Phil Slater without whom this thesis would not have been possible – for his patience, constructive comments, and ability to say things that needed to be said in a positive and encouraging way. Thank you Phil. To Matt McMahon, who is always an inspiration, whether in conversation or in performance. To Simon Barker, for challenging some fundamental assumptions and talking about things that made me think. To Troy Lever, Abel Cross, and Pete ‘Göfren’ for their help in the early stages. • Analytic, Descriptive, and Prescriptive Components of Evolving Jazz: a New Model Based on the Works of Brad Mehldau
Analytic, Descriptive, and Prescriptive Components of Evolving Jazz: A New Model Based on the Works of Brad Mehldau Mark Edward Baynes An exegesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts The University of Auckland 2015 ii Abstract Jazz has steadily evolved from its inception in the late 19th century to the present. As is the case for other genres, musicological analytic research on jazz evolution has lagged behind its practice; consequently, there is a paucity of in-depth descriptive and analytic research on the music of recent innovators. Among the most recent examples of this evolution, the works of Brad Mehldau as a solo/ensemble pianist and as a composer arguably embody some of the most compelling innovations in the field. Non-academically oriented jazz writers and fans have consistently assigned these works vanguard status, but Mehldau’s output has not yet been sufficiently examined to prescribe performance methods. This exegesis contains (1) descriptive analysis of improvisation contained within a broad cross-section of Mehldau’s music; (2) definition of a new analytical lexicon derived from a holistic study of consonance, dissonance, and research into perceived motivation in music; and (3) prescriptive musical tools relating to consonance and dissonance that have informed the researcher’s performance. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my special thanks to Dr David Lines, Associate Professor W. GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • Brad Mehldau Trio Brad Mehldau, Pianoforte Larry Grenadier, Contrabbasso Jorge Rossy, Batteria

ADLER • NOV 6, 2019 ! Twitter " Facebook # Google+ $ Email LEO VAN VELZEN / LEOVANVELZEN.COM Gerry Teekens, founder and proprietor of Criss Cross Jazz, an unassuming Dutch indie label that became a vital repository of recorded jazz from the 1980s onward, died on Oct. 31. He was 83. His death was confirmed by his son, Jerry Teekens, Jr. At the news, tributes poured in from Criss Cross artists old and new, including soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist David Gilmore. Formerly a professional drummer, Teekens founded Criss Cross in 1981 with a mission to document swinging, straight-ahead jazz of the highest caliber. At first the roster featured musicians as revered as guitarist Jimmy Raney and saxophonist Warne Marsh, but it grew to include the young and the promising: saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Mark Turner, to name but a few, and pianists Orrin Evans, Bill Charlap and Benny Green. Countdown Watch later Share Multiple times a year, Teekens would cross the ocean from Enschede, Netherlands (thus the Criss Cross name), taking up at Rudy Van Gelder’s famed studio in New Jersey (and later at Systems Two in Brooklyn) for a full week of recording — knocking out an album a day, in the old-school way. In recent years the Criss Cross aesthetic began to broaden, with artists like alto saxophonist David Binney and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin using electronics and synthesizers, moving beyond the strictures of one-take-and-done while still remaining on board with the label.

  • John Mcneil Bill Mchenry
John McNeil John McNeil is regarded as one of the most original and creative jazz artists in the world today. For nearly three decades John has toured with his own groups and has received widespread acclaim as both a player and composer. His highly personal trumpet style communicates across the full range of contemporary jazz, and his compositions combine harmonic freedom with melodic accessibility. John's restless experimentation has kept him on the cutting edge of new music. His background includes the Horace Silver Quintet, Gerry Mulligan, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. John is equally at home in free and structured settings, and this versatility has put him on stage with artists from Slide Hampton to John Abercrombie. John McNeil was born in 1948 in northern California. Due to a lack of available musical instruction in his home town of Yreka, John largely taught himself to play trumpet and read music. By the time he graduated from high school in 1966, John had already begun playing professionally in the northern California region. John moved to New York in the mid-1970's and began a freelance career. His reputation as an innovative trumpet voice began to grow as he played with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and led his own groups at clubs such as Boomer's, the legendary Village jazz room. In the late 70's, John joined the Horace Silver Quintet. Around the same time, he began recording for the SteepleChase label under his own name and toured internationally. Although he has worked as a sideman with such luminaries as Gerry Mulligan, John has consistently led his own groups from about 1980 to the present.

  • Joshua Redman Bio
JOSHUA REDMAN BIO Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of musics (jazz, classical, rock, soul, Indian, Indonesian, Middle-Eastern, African) and instruments (recorder, piano, guitar, gatham, gamelan), and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later. The early influences of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley and his father, Dewey Redman, as well as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. But although Joshua loved playing the saxophone and was a dedicated member of the award-winning Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble and Combo from 1983-86, academics were always his first priority, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Social Studies. He had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Some of his friends (former students at the Berklee College of Music whom Joshua had met while in Boston) had recently relocated to Brooklyn, and they were looking for another housemate to help with the rent. Redman accepted their invitation to move in, and almost immediately he found himself immersed in the New York jazz scene.
