This redefinition makes the interaction problem of substance dualism inapplicable, because there is no soul “in” a body. However, he works around the mind- body problem only by sacrificing an immaterial afterlife, as well as the identity and separability of the soul after death. Additionally, Thomistic psychology has difficulty accounting for the transmission of universals, nor does it seem able to overcome the arguments for causal closure.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

  • Girl in Red - Serotonin Episode 208
Song Exploder girl in red - Serotonin Episode 208 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. Before this episode starts, I want to let you know that there is some frank discussion of mental health issues, including panic attacks, medical fears and thoughts of self-harm. There’s also some explicit language. (“Serotonin” by GIRL IN RED) Hrishikesh: Marie Ulven is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Norway, who makes music under the name, girl in red. She just released her debut album in April 2021, but she’s already got a lot of fans and she’s gotten a lot of critical acclaim from two EPs and singles that she’s released online, including a couple of songs that went gold. The New York Times included her work in their best songs of the year in both 2018 and 2019. Last year she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Norwegian Grammys, and this year she won their award International Success of the Year. “Do you listen to girl in red?” has also become code on TikTok, a sort of shibboleth, to ask if someone’s a lesbian. In this episode, Marie breaks down the song “Serotonin,” a song that started as a video she posted to her own TikTok in the early days of lockdown in 2020. You’ll hear the original version she recorded on her own, before she started working with producer Matias Téllez, and later, with Grammy-winning artist and producer Finneas O’Connell, who helped finish the song.

  • Song & Music in the Movement
Transcript: Song & Music in the Movement A Conversation with Candie Carawan, Charles Cobb, Bettie Mae Fikes, Worth Long, Charles Neblett, and Hollis Watkins, September 19 – 20, 2017. Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Song_2017.09.19_01TASCAM Charlie Cobb: [00:41] So the recorders are on and the levels are okay. Okay. This is a fairly simple process here and informal. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing.

  • James Brown Is Alive!
James Brown Is Alive! Matt Stauffer [=\ [=\ [=\ WRITER’S COMMENT: On the first day of class Seth asked us what kind of music we like. I’ve always been a huge James Brown fan (anyone who can list what he had for dinner and call it a song is all right by me). That he had recently died helped me decide that I would find some way to write about him. But explaining his importance to poetry and orality was difficult. It was a case of knowing James Brown is an important figure, but not knowing how to explain it. The solution was simply to listen to music, and hear James Brown’s influence, and hear what his influences were. People like Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Wilson Pickett, Heavy D and a bunch of others came up, and from there it was just a matter of searching out the right information to help connect those dots. Also, I’m a big fan of the word “eschew.” —Matt Stauffer INSTRUCTOR’S COMMENT: My most immediate reaction to Matt Stauffer’s work in this essay was admiration for his ability to bridge disciplines, bringing together African American history, musicology, literary history, and close reading. As his instructor for English 4, I can see the way he integrates his reading in sound poetry and the theories of Walter Ong and Roland Barthes with his long-standing interest in funk, soul and hip-hop, the truly popular poetries of our era since the 1960s. His willingness to take seriously the ‘get back’-s and ‘hit me’-s of James Brown—sounds we usually hear but do not listen to—indeed enlivens our experience of the Godfather of Soul.

  • Hollywood's Treatment of World War I
Making Meaning from the Images: Hollywood’s Treatment of World War I John Harvey Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for the student, using the guidelines provided in the unit objective to focus on the importance of World War I not only as an historic event but also as a multi-faceted tool of Hollywood. It is not to say that Hollywood is secretly run by an illuminati bent on shaping our view of the world, but the images Hollywood presents can often be interpreted as representative of certain ideologies that were present during the era of a given film‘s production. History, it is said, repeats itself. Sometimes, history on film tells as much about the time the film was made as about the period it is depicting. The view through cinema shows themes or images that bear repeating. Characteristic of the great movie machine, Hollywood has often used the power of the cinematic medium to persuade audience viewers to view things in a different light. Just as a director or cinematographer will deliberately reposition the lighting setup for a given shot from a film to enhance, de- emphasize, or subtly affect the appearance of a set or a particular actor, directors, producers, and studios have used film as a means of promulgating a virtue, ethos, or value system via narrative structure or a juxtaposition of images. This is commonly accepted as one of the most powerful components of any visual medium, and film is certainly not an exception to the rule. Some have maintained that such use of an art form is propaganda.

  • James Brown's 'Funky Drummer'
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by edoc Publication server Continuity and Break: James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’ Anne Danielsen, University of Oslo Abstract: In groove-oriented music, the basic unit of the song is repeated so many times that our inclination as listeners to organize the musical material into an overall form gradually fades away. Instead of waiting for events to come, we are submerged in what is before us. Dancing, playing, and listening in such a state of being are not characterized by consideration or reflection but rather by a presence in the here and now of the event. It is likely to believe that there is a connection between such an experience and the ways in which a groove is designed. This article investigates how a groove-based tune, more precisely Funky Drummer by James Brown and his band, is given form in time and, moreover, how this form is experienced while being in such a ‘participatory mode’ (Keil). Of importance is also to discuss how the rhythmic design of the groove at a microlevel contributes to this experience. In groove-oriented music, the basic unit of the song is repeated so many times that our inclination as listeners to organize the musical material into an overall form gradually fades away. Instead of waiting for events to come, we are submerged in what is before us. Our focus turns inward, as if our sensibility for details, for timing inflections and tiny timbral nuances, is inversely proportional to musical variation on a larger scale.
