This is che first fossil record of this genus in che Meditetranean Neogene. Chileutomia pontileviensis (de Morgan, 1915) has a paucispiral, bulbous protoconch (like C. miranda), but differs by having a more elongated, less stepped teleoconch and dif- fers from from both C. paulinensisand C. miranda by having lesser developed varices. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations.

Eight species are new records for Costa Rica: Cyclostrema tortuganum, Rissoina c.f. fenestrata, Vanikoro oxychone, Epitonium c.f. denticulatum, Latirus infundibulum, Hastula salleana, Daphnella lymneiformis and Tenaturris c.f. inepta. Thirteen species are found on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica: Tegula fas- ciata, Cymatium nicobaricum, Anachis lyrata, Costoanachis varia, Mitrella ocellata, Agaronia testacea, Hastula cinerea, Architectonica nobilis, Dolabrifera dolabrifera, Stylocheilus striatus, Cavolinia longirostris, Phidiana lascrucensis and Spurilla neapolitana. In comparison with a recent report of the Caribbean and west- ern Atlantic gastropods of Colombia, the Costarican fauna hardly presents 35.8% of those species. Similarly, in comparison with a work from Panama, the quantity of species shared between Costa Rica and its nearby coun- try is 48.2%. The number of species reported here is probably an underestimation because few micromolluscs have been studied and no samples have been collected in deep waters nor in the north part of the coast. Newly available material of Eulimacrostoma patula expands the known geographic distribution of this species in the Caribbean to the north coast of Brazil. Webster A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in SYSTEMATICS AND EVOLUTION Department of Biological Sciences University of Alberta © Nicole B. Webster, 2017 Abstract The shells of molluscs are a beautiful and intriguing tool for studying both the evolution and development of novel morphologies. The mantle secretes a logarithmically spiraled shell through accretionary growth at the apertural margin, not unlike a 3D printer adding material layer by layer. Shell form has been modeled extensively, and the basic mechanics of shell secretion are understood. Shelled molluscs also have an excellent fossil record, which permits historical studies of morphological evolution. One aspect of shell growth — shell sculpture — has been sorely understudied. This thesis focuses on its evolution and development. Specifically, I examine the evolution and development of the most elaborate form of sculpture, varices — periodic axial shell thickenings, that vary from elaborate wings and spines, to subtle scars. I focus primarily on the gastropod family Muricidae, which exemplifies a diversity of shell sculpture, especially varices and the superficially similar lamellae. Prior to this work, varices lacked a comprehensive definition, which this thesis provides. I describe all 41 separate evolutionary origins of periodic varices. Overall, varices are more prevalent a) where predation pressure is stronger: in warm, shallow marine waters, b) on high‑spired shells and c) in clades with axial ribs. Many origins of varices were clumped phylogenetically, and most arose after the mid‑Mesozoic. Although half of all lineages with varices had three or fewer genera, diversification rates in the Tonnoidea correlated positively with the advent of varices.

GASTROPODA (PROSOBRANCHIA AND OPISTHOBRANCHIA) Rudiger BielerI,2 and Alison Bradford 1 ABSTRACT. A brief outline of the history and sources of the malacological collection at the Delaware Museum of Natural History is given. All type material (as defined by ICZN Article 72) was separated from the main collection. This paper reviews and lists the type holdings of Recent prosobranch and opisthobranch gastropods. The type status of each specimen was studied by comparison with the original publications. A total of 191 type lots of 160 species-group taxa from 65 authors is recognized; 5 5 of these are holotypes or syn type lots. The majority of name-bearing types consists of marine caenogastropod prosobranchs. An anno­ tated list of all type lots as well as an author index are given. The list of references contains all papers in which the taxa are first described and also other major publications based on the collection. INTRODUCTION The malacological collection of the Delaware Museum of Natural History (DMNH) with currently about 190,000 catalogued lots is one of the largest of its kind in the country. In 1982, then containing 135,000 catalogued lots, it was ranked eighth in size among the U.S. collections in a survey by Thompson (1982: 44). The species of the Pyramidellidae collected during several expeditions in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean are listed, with locality data, depth ranges, and notes on nomenclature, system- atics and distribution. The samples classified with the genera Eulimella (partly), Anisocycla, Syrnola, Chrysallida and Odostomella are dealt with in this paper. In total 70 species are reported from the research area, 24 of which are described as new to science. A lectotype of Obeliscus gracillima Smith, 1872 (= Eulimella variabilis de Folin, 1870) and neotypes of Chrysallida multicostata (Jeffreys, 1884) and Jaminia obtusa Brown, 1827, are designated.

One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs.
