  • DUNCAN SHEIK Bio After Breaking Through in the Late '90S with His Top
DUNCAN SHEIK Bio After breaking through in the late ‘90s with his Top 20 single “Barely Breathing,” Duncan Sheik spent much of the subsequent decade taking a breather from the usual rock singer/songwriter rituals. His focus was on albums that broke with pop music conventions and, additionally, theatrical musicals like Spring Awakening, the Broadway sensation that won him 2 Tony Awards and a Grammy. As he explains this lengthy diversion now: “After a while you get boring to everyone else, but you get really bored with yourself. There was a moment where I was much more interested in these kind of longer narrative arcs, and being able to sing from the perspective of somebody else’s persona, as opposed to Duncan Sheik’s.” His new album(s) splits the difference. Sheik makes his long-awaited return to singing stand-alone pop songs, but he hasn’t given up his recent habit of inhabiting characters. In this case, though, the characters are Morrissey, Robert Smith, Martin Gore, and David Sylvian. Duncan Sheik Covers 80s, released in 2011, features twelve of his highly personalized takes on the synth-pop era, including smashes and obscurities from the likes of the Cure, New Order, Tears for Fears, the Smiths, the Psychedelic Furs, the Thompson Twins, Love & Rockets, Howard Jones, Japan, Talk Talk, and the Blue Nile. “It is nice to sing these songs that are written by other people, because again, you’re inhabiting this other character that isn’t you, but in this case is part of what made me who I am,” Sheik says.

  • The Resistance - Duncan Sheik Interview Transcript Mat Conner: Duncan, I’D Love to Start Here, Where We Start All of Our Interviews on the Resistance
The Resistance - Duncan Sheik interview transcript Ma6 Conner: Duncan, I’d love to start here, where we start all of our interviews on The Resistance. And that’s with our source material from Steven Pressfield’s book, The War of Art. Let me just read this opening quote. And I’d love to get your response to it. Pressfield writes this: “Most of us have two lives: the life we live, and the unlived life within us. And between the two stands the resistance.” Duncan, I would just love to know for you, what does resistance look like, whether personal or professional. How are you wrestling with that? Duncan Sheik: That’s an amazing quote. I’ve been thinking about it a li7le bit this morning. There’s so many levels to it and layers to it and interpreta<ons to it that I’ve been sort of grappling with in the back of my mind. You know, on the face of it, the unlived life, just from a purely prac<cal and sort of from the standpoint of reality, the unlived life is really just the life that you have leC to live. So basically we’re talking about from this moment on. If, in the context of the unlived life that you might have lived in the past, I think pre7y much everybody has some regrets, big and small about the way they’ve handled certain things and gone about things. But of course, I try to live in a way where I have as few regrets as possible.

  • Spring Awakening Dramaturgy Casebook
Spring awakening Dramaturgy CaSebook Play by Frank Wedekind Adapted by Steven Sater Music by Duncan Sheik Clint Sides Jazmine Logan 1 Central to every happy and well-adjusted adult life has been the ability to live through the challenges and traumas of adolescence and young adulthood. The perils of awakening sexuality in each of ourselves brands us with our own individuality. This play honestly addresses feelings and events that connect us all. Themes of the Play This play resonates with young people today for the same reasons it did when written, over a century ago. The constant and never-ending challenge of teaching each new generation of children how to positively grow into their adult bodies, with healthy attitudes and a sound understanding of their own sexuality. Spring Awakening was written by an educator; a man who saw a need for openness and honesty about what was wrong with children’s educations in the Europe of the 19th century. Parents’ fears and expectations for their adolescent children were causing suffering and despair for the young; as much can be said about parents in America today. The Progress of a Century Where do parents in today’s world stand on sex education? How are we addressing the problems children face that lead them to despair and thoughts of suicide? Are parents and educators any more prepared to help the young deal with the problems and challenges of growing up in our modern, tech-heavy society which is changing so fast? Have we 2 grown up more comfortable with our own sexuality; more accepting of all the variations that naturally occur in such a large population? How the Play Impacts a Modern Audience These young actors present us with these questions; asking us all to examine honestly our own fears and doubts, our own uncertainties about raising children.

  • Spring Awakening
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS CONTACT: Jasmine Jiang, 240.670.8798 [email protected] ROUND HOUSE THEATRE CONTINUES SEASON WITH GROUNDBREAKING ROCK MUSICAL SPRING AWAKENING January 22 – February 23 at Round House Theatre Bethesda, Md. (December 19, 2019) – Round House Theatre continues its 2019-2020 Homecoming Season with Spring Awakening, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s Tony®- winning musical adaptation of the play by Frank Wedekind. Directed by Alan Paul, Spring Awakening runs January 22 – February 23, 2020 in the newly renovated Round House Theatre. Please see below for complete program details and ticket information. Praised by the New York Times as “exhilarating … a fresh breeze of true inspiration,” Spring Awakening follows a group of repressed and restless adolescents grappling with the onset of adulthood. With music by American singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, the bold musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s provocative 19th- century play illuminates the anxieties, agonies, and ecstasies of growing up with an electrifying mix of poignancy and rock and roll. A groundbreaking Broadway hit that won eight Tony® Awards in 2007—including Best Musical, Book, Original Score, and Orchestrations—Spring Awakening‘s exploration of the gulf between teens and adults has only gained relevance in the past decade. Alan Paul will make his Round House directorial debut at the helm of this production, which he hopes will resonate with audiences in 2020 just as much as it did in 1981. “I love this show because it is such a human exploration of growing up and discovering who you are,” says Paul.
