Raoul De Keyser: Drift, published on the occasion of the eponymous show curated by Ulrich Loock at David Zwirner, is organized around a group of 23 paintings that De Keyser (1930ndash;2012) completed shortly before his death, which have become known collectively as The Last Wall. Imposing stark material and formal limitations, De Keyser was able to revisit in this body of work many of the major themes that occupied him throughout his nearly 50-year career: inconspicuous things close at hand, the landscape of the low lands where he lived all his life and the partition of the picture plane. This elegant catalogue presents plates and details of a selection of paintings, beginning in the 1970s, that emphasizes the tentative way De Keyser chose to explore his themes. Drift reveals an uncompromising artist who continued to pose new aesthetic problems for himself?even at the end of his life?and managed to come up with original and deeply moving solutions. Mr. De Keyser avoided most of paintingrsquo;s pomp ? its portent of skill, high seriousness or elevated feeling. He was a brilliant colorist with a genius for a reticent, nondescript beauty that doesnrsquo;t demand attention yet can trap the eye. (Roberta Smith The New York Times)About the AuthorSince the mid-1960s, work by Raoul De Keyser (1930ndash;2012) has been the subject of several solo exhibitions at prominent institutions. Since 1999, his work has been represented by David Zwirner. In 2000, a large-scale retrospective was presented at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, which traveled to the Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia and The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. A major survey of the artistrsquo;s paintings traveled extensively from 2004 and 2005 to the Whitechapel Gallery, London; Museacute;e de Rochechouart, France; De Pont Museum for Contemporary Art, Tilburg, The Netherlands; Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal; and the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland. In 2009, his paintings were exhibited in a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany and his watercolors were presented jointly at the Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin.Ulrich Loock was born in 1953 in Braunschweig, Germany. He was Director of Kunsthalle Bern from 1985ndash;1997, Director of Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland from 1997ndash;2001, and Deputy Director of Museu de Serralves, Porto, Portugal from 2003ndash;2010. He currently lives and works in Berlin as an independent curator, art critic and lecturer. Raoul De Keyser betekent veel voor ons. In totaal realiseerde hij tien indrukwekkende solotentoonstellingen in de galerie. Zijn werk is internationaal erkend door talrijke verzamelaars, curatoren en musea. Hij had solotentoonstellingen in the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (GB); Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, Kunstmuseum Bonn (DE); De Pont, Tilburg (NL), Kunsthalle Bern, Kunstverein St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum Luzern (CH); Fundacao Serralves, Porto (PT) and The Renaissance Society in Chicago (US). In 1992 werd hij door Jan Hoet geselecteerd voor Documenta IX in Kassel. In 2007 volgde een uitnodiging van Robert Storr voor de Biennale van Venetië, gecureerd door Bice Curiger. The origin of the book you are holding now lies within this generous gesture. Thirty years later, when I accidently rediscovered it, I realised that the text quotes a book by Susan Sontag, translated and typewritten by an unknown hand. Everyone has a sort of individual form vision. In all the greatest artists the seeds of this form vision has been present even in their early work, and to some extent their work has been a gradual unfolding of this rhythm throughout. (…) It’s something the artist can’t control – it’s his make up. (…) The less conscious you are of your own individual form rhythm, the more likely it is, I think, to get richer and fuller and develop. The ​ ​ ​ ​ first solo show of the artist’s work in Greater China, the exhibition will feature paintings from the last twenty-five years of De Keyser’s five-decade career, illustrating his intuitive—yet rigorous—facility with his medium. Complementing the presentation in Hong Kong will be an online exhibition, New Visions: ​ ​ After De Keyser, that situates the late Belgian painter in dialogue with contemporary painters whose art ​ ​ continues to relate to or be informed by his pioneering compositions. De Keyser (1930–2012) is known for his sophisticated and tempered paintings that subtly and evocatively explore the relationship between color and form. On view at 24 Grafton Street, Raoul De Keyser: Drift is organized around a group of twenty-two works completed shortly before his death in October 2012, and known as The Last Wall. Together, they revisit some of the major subjects that occupied the artist throughout his nearly fifty-year long career, including the landscape of the Belgian lowlands where he grew up and lived his entire life, the inconspicuous things close at hand, and the partition of the picture plane. These paintings will be accompanied by a careful selection of works from the 1990s onwards that are likewise representative of these subjects and further contextualize the later series. The exhibition marks De Keyser’s first major show in London since his critically acclaimed 2004 traveling survey of paintings at the Photo by Jef Van Eynde Whitechapel Gallery. De Keyser’s subtly evocative paintings are at once straightforward and cryptic, abstract and figurative.     ZENO X GALLERY Frank Demaegd RAOUL DE KEYSER ‘Watercolours’ 11 September – 9 Oktober 2009 woe – zat 14-18u of op afspraak ANTWERPEN – Met veel plezier kondigt Zeno X Gallery de nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘Watercolours’ aan met recente aquarellen van Raoul De Keyser. Deze 28 werken, gemaakt tussen 2000 en 2008, waren recent te zien in de grotere solo tentoonstelling Watercolours in het Museu Serralves in Porto en de Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin. Ook verscheen er rond deze groep werken een uitgebreide catalogus. De aquarellen van Raoul De Keyser vormen een deel van zijn oeuvre dat tot vandaag weinig bekendheid geniet. Deze delicate werken op klein formaat, geschilderd met brede, snelle stroken dunne verf, roepen door hun schaal en medium een gevoel van intimiteit op. Onderhevig aan de vloeibaarheid en transparantie van waterverf, ontstaan er beelden die spelen met het toeval en een sterke evocatieve kracht bezitten. Kleurstroken in lichte, bijna opgeloste tinten, terugkerende wolk of vogelachtige motieven, maar ook efemere landschappen die zich in enkele streken verf blauwachtig tot ver in de verte lijken uit te strekken. Een aquarel uit 2005, met een fijn rood randje gekadreerd als een mooie postkaart, evoceert een spiegelend landschap dat enkel bijeengehouden lijkt te worden door het contrast tussen het ruwe materiaal van de niet geheel opgeloste verf en de waterige partijen. Ook in de andere werken uit deze reeks - ze zijn allen geschilderd op adreskaartjes van de kunstenaar, het watermerk is duidelijk zichtbaar – krijgen we deze Oosters aandoende beelden van een landschap. Evenmin als de andere aquarellen verwijzen ze echter naar bestaande plaatsen.
