Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the artistic nature of this endeavour from a production viewpoint is still developing. This study presents an understanding of the phenomenological aspects of Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within this genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. A framework is then put forward for understanding sonic elements of recorded Heavy Metal Music. Well, if you look around at a lot emerging bands such as Merciless Death, Bonded By Blood, Municipal Waste and Evile for example. Of course, The Haunted’s first album from over a decade ago is pretty much a thrash masterpiece as well. In 2001, the Thrash Of The Titans festival occurred in San Francisco (California, U.S.A.) and all of a sudden, legendary thrash acts such as Exodus, Light Pupil Dilate - Vio-lence and Death Angel got a new lease on Snake Wine life. Whilst some are on their second chance, others are still ploughing on as they’ve always done – I’m looking at you, Slayer. But with the resurgence of interest in the thrash scene, we’ve seen docos such as Get Thrashed and Born In The Basement see the light of day which interview numerous figures from the scene back in the day as they discuss the scene, it’s formative years, and eventual rise and fall from grace. Chalk up another in the thrash doco category with Aural Deicide - Till Death Do Amphetamine – Metallica And The Dawn Of Thrash, and that’s just what it is all about. Us Part Of all the thrash acts from the scene back in the day, there’s no denying Metallica’s rise to dominance and throughout this doco, that is exactly what is discussed hand in hand with the emergence of the thrash scene that they were a significant part of.

Prof. József Mezei Abstract: The music industry is undergoing an extensive transformation as a result of growth in streaming data and various AI technologies, which allow for more sophisticated marketing and sales methods. Since consumption patterns vary by different factors such as genre and engagement, each customer segment needs to be targeted uniquely for maximal efficiency. A challenge in this genre-based segmentation method lies in today’s large music databases and their maintenance, which have shown to require exhausting and time-consuming work. This has led to automatic music genre classification (AMGC) becoming the most common area of research within the growing field of music information retrieval (MIR). A large portion of previous research has been shown to suffer from serious integrity issues. The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the current state of applying machine learning for the task of AMGC. Low-level features are derived from audio signals to form a custom-made data set consisting of five subgenres of heavy metal music. Different parameter sets and learning algorithms are weighted against each other to derive insights into the success factors. The results suggest that admirable results can be achieved even with fuzzy subgenres, but that a larger number of high-quality features are needed to further extend the accuracy for reliable real-life applications.
