We knew that a citywide survey of historic resources was essential—surprisingly, none has ever been done for Philadelphia—but how to do that and what else such a plan should include was uncertain. Now, three years later, we have completed several stages of work on this project and have a clearer idea of where we are headed, which we are eager to share with others and to receive comments and suggestions. Two key reports completed this year have been posted on the website we created for this project—www.Preserve Philadelphia.org. Camac St. aintaining and repairing an older house can sometimes be a financial chal- lenge for low- and moderate-income homeowners. To help address this chal- BEFORE AFTER M lenge the Preservation Alliance has, since early 2006, provided grants to low/moderate-income homeowners to help subsidize the costs of restoring the exteriors of their residences. The grant program recently celebrated the completion of its 50th project. The source of the grant funds came from the City of Philadelphia’s Neighborhood Transformation Initiative, which provided more than $1.4 million to the Alliance’s Historic Properties Repair Program; the National Trust for Historic Preservation provid- ed an additional $130,000. Typical projects are masonry, carpentry and roof repairs, porch restorations and win- dow and door replacements. Projects have been in historic districts in Parkside, Germantown, Girard Estate, West Philadelphia, Overbrook Farms, Fishtown, Queen Village, Fairmount, Powelton, Manayunk and north central Philadelphia. The homeowners that have completed projects appreciate the historical and architec- 823 St. Bernard St. tural significance of their homes and value the opportunity the grant program allows them to have restoration-quality workmanship that they otherwise could not afford. “Thank you so much for all your good work and good energy in helping preserve my BEFORE AFTER cherished piece of the 18th century,” said one South Philadelphia homeowner. “It meant a great deal to me. I still can’t believe it,” reported another homeowner who was able to have historically correct windows installed. To be eligible for the restoration grants, homeowners must live in a residential proper- ty that lies within a city or national historic district in Philadelphia or that is individual- ly designated as historic. The grants pay the difference between the cost of non-historic “remodeling” and a more authentic restoration-level project that meets the standards of the Philadelphia Historical Commission. A grant of up to $20,000 can go to each project; the average grant is about $16,000. Young 2009 Abstract This dissertation examines how public history and historic preservation have changed during the twentieth century by examining the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1683, Germantown is one of America’s most historic neighborhoods, with resonant landmarks related to the nation’s political, military, industrial, and cultural history. Efforts to preserve the historic sites of the neighborhood have resulted in the presence of fourteen historic sites and house museums, including sites owned by the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the City of Philadelphia. Germantown is also a neighborhood where many of the ills that came to beset many American cities in the twentieth century are easy to spot. The 2000 census showed that one quarter of its citizens live at or below the poverty line. Germantown High School recently made national headlines when students there attacked a popular teacher, causing severe injuries. Many businesses and landmark buildings now stand shuttered in community that no longer can draw on the manufacturing or retail economy it once did. Germantown’s twentieth century has seen remarkably creative approaches to contemporary problems using historic preservation at their core.

    CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a five-year preservation plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW Imagining Our Future: Preserving Pennsylvania’s Collections, published in August 2009, includes an in-depth analysis of conditions and needs at Pennsylvania’s collecting institutions, a detailed preservation plan to improve collections care throughout the state, and a five-year implementation timetable (2010-2015). The analysis concludes that many of Pennsylvania’s most important historic holdings must be considered at risk. Millions of items comprise these collections, and the financial resources available to care for them are limited and shrinking. Pennsylvania is a state vibrant with world-class art museums, libraries, historic sites. Arts and culture play a substantial role in creating business, jobs, and bringing revenue into the state and stewardship of its artifacts is too important —to the state, to the people, to the history of country—to be ignored. This call to action is a rallying cry for all future generations of Pennsylvanians. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in close partnership with three leading preservation organizations, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations (PFMHO), and LYRASIS, the Conservation Center for Arts & Historic Artifacts organized and led the assessment and planning process. To a genealogist engrossed in the fascination of unearthing history and family lore, those are challenging words. Of course, one can't actually "go back", but, through diligent research, we can sometimes re-create what has been. This we did in the Reunion. In 1987, I gave a talk to the Colonial Dames XVII Century, who had welcomed me as a member of Anne Bradstreet Chapter in 1975, because of my direct descendancy from William Rittenhouse, the patriarch. For those listeners who didn't hear the earlier presentation, I will include it as a prelude to today's thesis. But first, may I say that when this talk was given, had anyone suggested to me that I would "go back" to the paper-making site and be one of the thousands of Rittenhouse descendants invited to a JOOth Reunion, I would have said, "No way". My decision would have been strengthened by a reluctance to travel without John, less ardor for airplanes, though I'd flown thousands of miles, and those words, "You can't go back". But, when I sent a note of regret upon receiving the invitation from Mr. Harold Rittenhouse, Chairman Coordinator of this ambitious venture, and a 10th generation direct descendant like myself, it was done with sadness, knowing I would have attended with my John. Along with the invitation was a questionnaire regarding all the immediate persons who share my Rittenhouse heritage.

Places like Philadelphia, Valley Forge and Gettysburg chronicle the birth of American democracy and draw visitors from around the world. Communities throughout Pennsylvania value their history and the work that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission does to help preserve these stories. Pennsylvania’s history is an asset to our economy as evidenced by the importance of heritage tourism as a major economic driver in the state’s economy. Without the historical resources of sustainable museums, well-preserved towns and cities, fascinating collections, and unique historical sites, Pennsylvania would not be a destination for millions of visitors who come to experience America’s past.
