There has never been a more exciting time to study health sciences. The research that has been conducted and the discoveries that were made will make the preservation of health and the treatment of disease more sophisticated and successful. Over the past centuries, the University of Szeged has become known as one of the most respected and highly acclaimed schools in Hungary. One of its most famous rectors was Albert Szent-Györgyi, who received the most prestigious award of sciences in 1937, the Nobel- prize for his research conducted at the university. The Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy form one of the largest health educational complexes in Hungary. Health sciences training is pursued here in three languages: Hungarian, English and German. As a major academic health science centre, the University of Szeged offers students a challenging environment in which they can prepare for their future career. The friendly atmosphere of the city, where virtually everything is within walking distance, provides excellent living and learning circumstances. Professor Gyula Szabó Head of the Foreign Language Programs Szeged Szeged is situated near the Southern border of Hungary, on the banks of the River Tisza. It is a city with deep historical and cultural roots, inhabited since Roman times. Szeged was rebuilt after the great flood in 1879 when most of the city was destroyed by the River Tisza. By Hungarian standards Szeged is a large city with its population of 160 000. Szeged is a thriving university town and the cultural and economic center of South-Eastern Hungary. The salami and paprika business has brought fame and credit to the city. Szeged has a museum of history, art galleries, theaters, movies, large parks, famous botanic garden. The National Theater of Szeged, its Contemporary Ballet Company and Symphony Orchestra provide a full season of entertainment. The city is also famous for its open-air theater and the city center is marked by the twin spires of the Roman Catholic Cathedral (Dóm). Szeged is often called the ”City of Sunshine” as it enjoys an average of 2000 hours of sunshine annually. University of Szeged The University of Szeged is one of the largest, top universities in Hungary. Its institutional and intellectual history goes back to 1581 when the Academia was found in Cluj, contemporary Romania. Due to the political circumstances after the first WW, the University found a new home in Szeged in 1921. In the year 2000 all universities and colleges were integrated into one educational institution, the Univer- sity of Szeged. Today the University comprises 12 faculties with 2.300 faculty members, 7.000 employees and 23.000 stu- dents. It has 600 undergraduate training programs and more than 100 Ph.D. programs in 19 Ph.D. schools. The English language program offered for foreign students at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy started in the academic year 1985/86 and 1986/87 respectively. In 1999 a German language medical program was also introduced for the first two years. In the academic year 2004/05 the English language dental medicine program was launched. Our teaching system is very traditional. We place great emphasis on the theoretical subjects in order to provide a solid basis for the clinical training. The programs are designed to unify the basic and clinical sciences, as it is believed that scientific and professional development cannot be sharply separated but should proceed concurrently throughout the programs. In short, our main mission is to train well-educated professionals. Medical Program The Medical Program covers six years, that is, 12 semesters. The first two years serve as the foundation of basic medical knowledge. From the third year theoretical training is extended with regular clinical practice, where students intensively take part in the work of the clinical departments and the teaching hospitals. The Faculty’s excellent scientific laboratories offer the students a wide range of opportunities to join high standard scientific research activities. In the last two semesters – the clerkship year – students perform clinical rotations of 40 weeks. At the conclusion of the program (State Board Examination) the title Doctor of Medicine (medical doctor; Dr. Med.) is granted for those who have met all the requirements of the training. Since the certificate is recognized in Germany, stu- dents can transfer to German medical schools. They also have a possibility to continue their studies at the English or Hungarian Language Medical Programs of the University of Szeged, or transfer to the German Language Medical Program of the Semmelweis University in Budapest. Foundation Year (Preparatory Course) These English and German language courses are organized for students who feel unprepared for the regular degree programs or who need help in review- ing basic sciences and English language to prepare for the final examination at the end of the course, which is equivalent to the entrance examination. The Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA) established in 1968 exists to preserve and promote the rich traditions and contributions by Hungarians to the practice of Medicine. The HMAA provides support for a medical student and fellow exchange between Hungary and the United States. The HMAA also encourages transatlantic collaboration through its annual October scientific meeting in Sarasota and through awards given to promising young researchers. The Balatonfured conference is an opportunity for Hungarian students from all the Hungarian Medical Universities to showcase their research in a relaxed lakeside environment. Presentations in English are encouraged and the opportunity is available for the winner to travel to Sarasota to present their work. Social activities are planned so that participants may meet one another as well as HMAA leadership who are physicians in clinical practice in the United States. DR. BÉLA PUKÁNSZKY PROFESSOR EGER 2017 1 I. Justification for the selected topic, the aim of the dissertation Several factors played a part in choosing the topic of my dissertation. First of all, the fact that my first degree was obtained from the legal successor of the Civil School of Teacher Training College, at the University of Szeged, Juhász Gyula Faculty of Education, and secondly that I have also been an instructor of this institution for the past fifteen years. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the focus of my interest as a historian and educator is the college's history, and its history in the Horthy era as the most prosperous, most exemplary period for civil, later elementary teacher training. In my dissertation, I sought to present the process in which the "Civil School Teacher Training" with a single qualification exam for a civil school that was born in 1868 was transformed between 1928 and 1947 into a college education based on a final exam or matriculation exam, supplemented by a four-year, four-group training with basic and qualifying exams, practice lessons and compulsory university intercourses. The primary hypothesis of my research is that this nearly eighty-year process is a period of professionalization of civil schooling and then teaching, which can be broken down into phases and can be analysed and supported by professionalization-theoretical models.
