The following advice has been received from the National Crime Agency’s CEOP Command regarding online safety:

How does grooming work online?

Grooming is about building a relationship with a child in order to later abuse them. This can be far easier online.

 Games, social media, live streaming platforms and chatrooms enable people to make contact with children to try to groom them.  They can create multiple online identities and even pretend to be children and young people to trick real children into chatting and sharing.  They can find out a lot about individual children before they make contact by looking at the things the child has posted.  Using this information they can target children who are particularly vulnerable and carefully plan what they will say and show an interest in.  They can also contact lots of children very quickly in the hope that one will respond.

How can I tell if my child is being groomed online?

There isn’t one clear sign of online grooming and it can be very hard to spot. If your child is being groomed they will probably be trying to keep it a secret from you.

 Have they suddenly become very secretive? People who abuse will try to stop young people telling their family and friends about the abusive relationship.

 Are they sad or withdrawn but won’t say why? If something is going on with your child online it might be really upsetting them. They might feel trapped, like they can’t talk about it. Let them know you’re there to listen.

 Do they seem distracted? We can all get caught up in ourselves if things are worrying us. If they seem unusually pre- occupied it might be because things are weighing on them which they feel they can’t talk about.

 Do they have sudden mood swings? Mood swings are not uncommon in adolescence but they can be a sign that someone has built up a relationship with your child which is affecting their moods.

 Are they unable to switch off from their phone or social media? Lots of us find it hard not to check our phone or the internet, but if your child gets particularly worried or stressed when they can’t, this can be a sign someone is controlling them.

Concerned about someone your child is in contact with?

If you are concerned that your child might be being groomed or are worried about online sexual abuse of the way someone has been communicating with your child you should seek support. You can contact your local police, children’s social care department or report directly to CEOP. Contact CEOP.police.uk/safety-centre/

If you want to discuss your concerns with someone, call the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000 or visit their website.

If you believe your child is at immediate risk, call the police on 999. Autumn 2019 Newsletter Page 5

What is the Wellbeing Award for Schools? The Wellbeing Award for Schools is a national accreditation awarded to school who recognise the importance of emotional health and wellbeing, and implement strategies to support staff and students in these matters.

It’s a fairly new award which was launched in 2017, and first awarded in 2018. It is provided by Optimus Education in association with the National Children’s Bureau

Why have Codsall Community High School signed up to this award? National statistics are startling, with 1 in 10 teenagers experiencing a mental health issue at any one time

We want our learners to be happy and healthy so that they can achieve the very best results they are capable of

1 in 4 of us will suffer a mental health problem at some point in our lives – we want to show that this is not a weakness, and to promote a supportive environment which listens and doesn’t judge.

What are we already doing to support our students? Discussing mental health issues via our student journal every week Providing support via cchs.com/mentalhealthawareness for links of where to get external help

Providing counselling and mentoring in school via the HOPE project and through our on-site mentor

Dubberley, Luke Gayden and Katerina Vorontsova. Well done for getting your voices heard - we know Mrs Shillingford you’ll make tremendous representatives for Oberon.

Our new Y9s have made an excellent start and this transition was made easier by the support and welcome they received from all Oberons in the true ethos of our house. I’m so proud to be leading such a caring and supportive team of students and tutors.

This term we have also seen a change in our House Charity due to a house vote. I am incredibly proud to announce that we will be representing Birmingham

Altruism and Achievement. Make 2020 the year that you try a little harder, be a little kinder and achieve a little higher.

Ms Lewis Have a very merry Christmas. Head of Vector

Ms Lewis

As ever, the first two half terms have been long, but they seem to have gone in the blink of an eye and our Year 9 students don’t seem so ‘new’ any more! For the vast majority they have made an excellent start, and integrated into school and our House seamlessly.

This year there has been some reorganisation of student voice with the introduction of the Student Parliament. I’d like to thank Vector’s House Council members for the contributions that they have made so far: Norman Fletcher, Honor Hayward, Precious Riley, Thomas Careless, James Wall, Hattie-Mai McMahon, Jake Wakeman and Maddison Hughes - cheers folks!

As ever, the New Year offers us all the chance to set new goals and make a fresh start. With this in mind, remember our school ethos of Ambition,
