Introduction – A translator’s work Lately I have been often wondering how many people think about the translator’s work when they read a book which was not originally written in their mother language. How many people think about the various difficulties the translator had to overcome in order to finish the translation. About the compromises and concessions they had to make, about the numerous untraslatable idioms and puns they had to deal with, about the distictions and differences between English and Czech syntax. How many people do that? Not that many, I would venture. I think that the reason, why people try not to think about translator too much, is because it reminds them that they are not reading an original text. They are not reading the actual words their favourite writer put on paper. What they do, in fact, is they read the work of a middleman. If I may exxaggerate a bit, the translator is in many ways a shadowy figure in the background that most people do not think about. His or her name may be printed in a small text in the back of the book, but the majority of the readers will never read it. And yet, without their hard work, there would not even be a book in the first place. Obviously there are exceptions. Martin Hilský, who is probably the most famous translator in the Czech Republik; Jan Kantůrek and his fantastic translation of Terry Prattchett’s Discworld series. The recently deceased Pavel Medek, who, in his translation of the Harry Potter series, came up with many great neologisms, and whose brilliance only really shows, when we compare his masterpiece to the – rather dull – Slovak translation. But those are just the exceptions. The majority of Czech translators remain in anonymity, and I do not see that changing in recent future. The job

  • Laurie LAURIE by Stephen King 1 Six Months After His Wife of Forty Years
Laurie LAURIE By Stephen King 1 Six months after his wife of forty years died, Lloyd Sunderland’s sister drove from Boca Raton to Caymen Key to visit him. She brought with her a dark gray puppy which she said was a Border Collie-Mudi mix. Lloyd had no idea what a Mudi was, and didn’t care. “I don’t want a dog, Beth. A dog is the last thing in the world I want. I can barely take care of myself.” “That’s obvious,” she said, unhooking the puppy’s toy-sized leash. “How much weight have you lost?” “I don’t know.” She appraised him. “I’d say fifteen pounds. Which you could afford to give, but not much more. I’m going to make you a sausage scramble. With toast. You’ve got eggs?” “I don’t want a sausage scramble,” Lloyd said, eyeing the dog. It was sitting on the white shag carpet, and he wondered how long it would be before it left a calling card there. The carpet needed a good vacuum and probably a shampoo, but at least it had never been peed on. The dog was looking at him with its amber eyes. Almost seeming to study him. “Do you or do you not have eggs?” “Yes, but—” 2 “And sausage? No, of course not. You’ve probably been living on frozen waffles and Campbell’s soup. I’ll get some at Publix. But first I’ll inventory your fridge and see what else you need.” She was his older sister by five years, had mostly raised him after their mother died, and as a child he had never been able to stand against her.

  • Cool Cats at the Milkweed Café
Meadow Notes – Carrie Crompton Cool Cats at the Milkweed Café In my last post, I mentioned sightings of Monarchs in the Way Station on July 9 and July 18. On July 20, I found a scattering of eggs – looking like tiny pearls to the naked eye – on the undersides of the leaves of one plant in the milkweed stand: Monarch Eggs, July 20 The eggs are larger white globules on the leaves; the small flat white dots on the leaf vein are bits of oozing milkweed sap. This was encouraging! The next day, I saw my first Monarch “cats” (caterpillars) of the season: Monarch Caterpillar, Second Instar, July 21 As you can see, this little cat has munched through the leaf, creating a hole for the sap to ooze out of, leaving the leaf vein depleted of sap, and therefore easier to eat. The cat is very, very tiny compared to the midvein of the milkweed leaf, but it’s already in its second instar: you can see tentacles (sensory organs) beginning to “sprout” as black spots just behind the head (lower end of the caterpillar in this photo). If all goes well, it will eat and grow and molt (break out of its skin) again and again and again, until it reaches its fifth instar. There were several more tiny cats on the undersides of other leaves on the same plant. On the morning of July 25, I saw a number of eggs, a few more second-instar babies, and this really big cat. The front and rear tentacles are recognizable as such.
