Dear Dragon Students and Parents,
SOMS is excited to partner once again with the Oldham County Public Library (OCPL) for our SOMS Summer Reading Program. We are especially grateful for OCPL’s generous funding of the fabulous prizes offered as incentives.
SOMS strongly values the importance of reading, and recent events have only strengthened this belief. Now more than ever is a time to appreciate the power of books to entertain us, enrich our learning, and allow us to travel to places far away while still remaining safe in our own homes! And in the words of Richard Steele, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
With these principles in mind, the 2020 SOMS Summer Reading Program will operate as follows:
● Students are encouraged to read as many books as they like (of their own choice)! But SOMS expects that all students will read at least 3 to help avoid the summer slide and keep their reading skills sharp. ● To submit each book, students should go to www.oldhampl.org/srp.html to fill out a simple Google Form. ● Each reading submission counts as one entry into a drawing for the student’s choice of prizes. In the past, prizes have included gift cards to Amazon or restaurants, electronic devices, artist supplies, and much more! ● See the poster below, created by our OCPL partners, which outlines the theme and general “rules” of submission. ○ Submissions begin on June 1st. ● The Summer Reading Program information will be posted on the SOMS and OCPL websites. ● If looking for book ideas, a list of Newbery books and popular teen picks is included below.
Please feel free to email Candy Thomas, SOMS Literacy Coach, Kara Storm, SOMS Media Specialist, or James Filchak, OCPL Liaison, if you are unable to find the information you need on the SOMS or OCPL site. Thanks!
