Previous meetings • The clubs' paths have never previously crossed, with Betis yet to face a Scottish opponent in their ten previous UEFA campaigns. • Celtic have won seven of their 32 UEFA matches against Spanish opposition, but none in Spain, where their record is D3 L13. They have fallen to defeat on all of their last seven visits to the country, the most recent 0-1 at Valencia in the second leg of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 32 – a tie they lost 3-0 on aggregate. Celtic have scored just five goals away to Spanish opponents, drawing a blank on 11 occasions. • The Bhoys also lost the 2002/03 UEFA Cup final in Seville, 2-3 after extra time against Porto. Form guide Betis • Betis ended the 2020/21 Spanish Liga campaign under new coach Manuel Pellegrini in sixth place to end a two- season absence from Europe and qualify for a third crack at the UEFA Europa League group stage. • The Seville club's only other European campaigns in the past 15 years were in the UEFA Europa League, in 2013/14 and 2018/19. On both occasions they made it through their group, reaching the round of 16 first time around, where they were ousted on penalties by city rivals and eventual winners Sevilla, then exiting at the round of 32 five years later after going down 6-4 on aggregate to Rennes (3-3 a, 1-3 h). • Betis are unbeaten at home in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W3 D3) and have conceded just one goal in those six games – in a 1-1 draw against AC Milan in 2018/19. Celtic • Celtic missed out on an unprecedented tenth successive Scottish league title last season, finishing 25 points adrift of arch-rivals Rangers as Premiership runners-up. Their European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they came bottom of a section including AC Milan, LOSC Lille and Sparta Praha. • This term, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Celtic were unable to negotiate the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase for the fourth successive summer, losing after extra time to Midtjylland in the second qualifying round (1-1 h, 1-2 a), but subsequent UEFA Europa League qualifying victories over Jablonec (4-2 a, 3-0 h) and AZ Alkmaar (2-0 h, 1-2 a) put them into the competition's group stage for the eighth time. The Glasgow giants have made further progress in just three of the previous seven participations, once as group winners (2019/20). • Celtic lost two of their three away fixtures in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, drawing the other, to make their all-time away record in the competition proper W2 D11 L12. Links and trivia • Betis's green and white colours were chosen for the club by co-founder Manuel Ramos Asensio, who supported Celtic as a student in Glasgow. • Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart played under Betis coach Pellegrini at Manchester City between 2013 and 2016. The former England international was replaced as first-choice 'keeper at City by Chile international Claudio Bravo, now a Betis player. • Betis defenders Marc Bartra and Martín Montoya both played in victorious Barcelona sides against Celtic in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage, the former in a 1-0 away win on Matchday 2, the latter in a 6-1 home success on Matchday 6. Bartra had also been in the Barça side that defeated Celtic 2-1 at home but lost by the same score in Glasgow in the previous season's competition.
