Barnes From February 2011 to July 2012, formerly suppressed political parties struggled to fill the political void post-Hosni Mubarak. While debates about Egypt’s political future circulated, individuals as well as dissident factions employed various interpretations of women and their roles to symbolically represent their varying ideologies. Despite the significance and economic value women produce as citizens, many political actors regularly bracket their concerns as irrelevant to the affairs of the state. As a result, political actors have engaged with new strategic techniques to access the various politicized publics that marginalized subaltern groups. The most publicized approach during this time, involved individual’s employment of social media, where political actors could not only escape state media’s control over information, but also produce their own level of citizen authority. By ethnographically exploring social networking forums and engaging with Cairene political actors, this research argues that a dialectical relationship exists between social media and politicized publics where actors repurpose, and challenge concepts about women to alter the political atmosphere during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Using participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and discourse analysis, this research explores how the analytical category of women was contested in social media and to what extent these classifications were manifested in publics found on- and offline. In order to understand the shifting political spheres during the Egyptian revolution, this ethnographic study engages with the symbolic deployment of women as a category, and the relationship between the production of women and publics. Participants of this research were selected amongst a systematic random sampling framework via Twitter; using prevalent hash tags that engaged with discourses about Egyptian women, the 2011 Egyptian revolution, future governance, and cyber activism. Key events served as a methodological frame to constitute case studies. The events were derived from interviews in which, participants defined what they believed to be moments of significance. This research contributes to the literature regarding the effect new communication technologies have on social structures by investigating the implication that genders has online. Franklin Introduction Th is chapter develops work on ‘Burqa-Ban’ controversies in light of the ‘post- feminist’ debates about the global beauty and fashion industries’ partnership with popular TV makeover shows.1 It looks at the politics of visibility in the context of controversies in the EU and the US about the regulation of Muslim veil dressing and com- parable controversies in the Middle East and North African region about women’s naked protests. In both cases national- regional debates became global, mediatised ones. In 2011, the internet's role in regime change made headlines as a wave of uprisings, frequently associated with the concept of "Twitter Revolution," swept across the Arab region, revealing the World Wide Web's power to document abuses, spread information, and rally masses to topple decades-old dictatorships. Back then, these mobilizations included men and women. Four years later, however, the very women at the forefront of a revolution now face a setback when it comes to claiming their rights in an often conservative and patriarchic society. 1 Indeed, despite what some hailed as an awakening in 2011, the Middle East continues to rank lowest on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report's Economic Participation, Opportunity and Political Empowerment subindexes. Reports continue to emerge on issues ranging from honor crimes to sexual-based violence,2 with some arguing women's plight in the region is in fact worse than pre- Arab Spring.3 Just as back then, the masses used the internet to push for regime change, women and their supporters are using the web to confront patriarchy and claim equal rights. From Yemen to Tunisia, Aleppo to Cairo, advocates in the Arab World are mastering modern-day technology in what is being dubbed cyber dissidence and digital activism.

    AN OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON Time to Dismantle the Parallel Legal System: Call from 395 Signatories 10th December 2015 Prime Minister David Cameron 10 Downing St London SW1A 2AA Dear Prime Minister Women’s rights and secular organisations urge the new government to take concerted measures to stop the development of parallel legal systems and to facilitate full and proper access to justice for all citizens and to one secular law for all. For decades, successive governments have appeased undemocratic religious power brokers in minority communities who have sought to gain power through multicultural and now multi- faith social policies. These policies have led to the homogenisation of minority communities including the ‘Muslim community’ and have recognised and legitimated ‘non-violent’ Islamists as ‘community representatives’, outsourcing legal justice to what are in effect kangaroo courts that deliver highly discriminatory and second-rate forms of ‘justice.’ Over the years, we have witnessed with increasing alarm the influence of ‘Sharia courts’ over the lives of citizens of Muslim heritage. Any government inquiry into ‘Sharia courts’ must also examine the impact of the draconian cuts in legal aid that have adversely affected access to justice for the most vulnerable. Many abused women from minority backgrounds, for instance, are increasingly forced to either represent themselves in court in what are often complex family legal proceedings or go to ‘Sharia courts’ that operate entirely outside the rule of law. The loss of legal aid contributes to a context that is conducive to the consolidation of privatised and unaccountable forms of justice and ‘Sharia courts’ are amongst the main beneficiaries.

I combine discourse analysis with a material investigation of computational media to consider the gendered and racialized dynamics of digital knowledge production about these issues, how this knowledge informs particular forms of intervention on behalf of women in the region, and new global labor networks emerging from the use of everyday technological devices and practices. First, I show how the use of spatial information technologies and crowdmapping applications for addressing sexual harassment in Egypt depoliticizes sexual violence by subordinating Egypt’s urban landscape to a visual cartography of crowdsourced data attributing harassment to ‘culture,’ while simultaneously erasing the role of the state in perpetuating sexual violence. Second, I consider the use of nudity by Arab women as a form of protest on social media to reveal filtering processes that depoliticize images of protesting gendered bodies as they are forced to travel with millions of other flagged pornographic, violent and other disturbing pictures managed by the hidden network of low-wage, off-shore content moderators tasked with managing this new form of ‘toxic waste.’ Third, I examine how Saudi women gamers use gameplay to transgress gender-based constraints on movement and communication, while articulating alternative discourses of creativity, access, and piety through the practice of gaming as a way to create more relations of ii accountability to women in the form of education, employment, and increased access to public space.

    PERFORMING PROTEST: FEMEN, NATION, AND THE MARKETING OF RESISTANCE Jessica Zychowicz Abstract The politics of the women’s protest group Femen, viewed as a media protest performance, reveal how the group has adapted the pop cultural staging of the Orange Revolution to their brand. Femen’s controversial topless methods have instantiated widespread debates around the diverse meanings of feminism both in Ukraine and among global audiences after the group’s move abroad in 2012. The findings in this article represent three years of ongoing research including original interviews, extensive analyses of blogs, news reports, photographs, and firsthand observations of activities by Femen and other feminist groups in Ukraine. By putting on display the dialectics of the commodification of female stereotypes, Femen’s performances expose the mechanisms in the mass media branding and marketing of protest. The controversial aesthetics of the group’s parodies illustrate the rhetorical limits at the intersection of local and global forms of civic expression. Keywords: protest, new media, aesthetics, feminism, political theory In 2008 four young Ukrainians named Anna Hutsol, Inna Shevchenko, Oksana Sashko, and Roman Zviazsky living in the city of Khmelnytskyi formed a feminist protest group. Femen has since gained notoriety worldwide for their controversial topless protests that once featured mostly street theatre, but now primarily consist of flash-mob performances circulated online. Members are mostly women in their twenties and thirties, the group lists twelve active members, and over four hundred non-active members on their website. Femen originally aimed to bring greater awareness to sex-tourism in Ukraine, though their performances now target a broad range of issues they define as patriarchal.

Chairman Mao said, “the guerrilla must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea.” A successful narrative is an indispensable element in a successful revolution. Revolutionaries rely on popular support. A powerful justice narrative is the kindling which ignites revolutionary hearts. Forged in the furnace of rebellion, revolutionary leaders tend to be charismatic figures, often with authoritarian tendencies. In the afterglow of successful revolution, revolutionary leaders are often loathe to change old habits, relying instead on old narratives and loyalists from revolutionary days.
