Home Access course selection allows parents and students an opportunity to view teacher recommendations and look together at course selection options. Once students have requested courses, students will meet with counselors to discuss and finalize their decisions. A high school master schedule is created from the information provided by Home Access course selection. Course Selection Timeline: • Mid to late October, the School District 308 High School Course Catalog is available online, through the District 308 website, to utilize as a tool for course selection. A copy is also available in the Student Services Office. • Late October to Early November, teachers of English, math, science, social studies and world languages enter their student placement recommendations into the Teacher Access Center. Teachers share course recommendations with students, as well as, provide an overview of department electives available for selection. • Early November, School District 308 high schools host a student Elective Fair during lunch hours. The Elective Fair offers current 9th – 11th grade students an opportunity to explore elective courses available to them. Simultaneously, Junior High and High School counselors meet with current 8th grade students to review the course selection process and options. • Mid-November through early December, Home Access Elective Course Selection is open. Parents and students are able to discuss elective options and make elective choices. Students and parents can view teacher recommendations. • Early December through late January, counselors meet with students to discuss and verify course selections. Pathways to Earning College Credit and an Associate’s Degree Through District 308 Course Work School District 308 offers a variety of college level coursework opportunities in each of our departments. These courses are labeled accordingly in the Course Catalog. Many times, students believe this process begins in the junior or senior year, but the process to earn college credits and movement towards an Associate degree can begin as early as 8th grade. There are three types of offerings that can garner college credit and work towards an Associate’s Degree: Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Credit, and Articulated Credit. The table below describes the similarities and differences. Advanced Placement Advanced Placement (AP) courses are aligned with the requirements of the College Board AP Program and are evaluated annually through the College Board AP Audit. These courses serve as the primary vehicle to prepare students for the AP examination in May. In addition to preparing students for the AP exam, AP courses allow students to experience the pace and intensity of a college-level course while still in high school. AP courses are challenging and rigorous, require more work and time than other high school courses, but are evaluated by former AP students as one of the most valuable experiences of their high school education. Although each college/university determines how AP examination credit is awarded, recent State of Illinois legislation decrees that all state colleges and universities must award some level of credit for scores of 3 or higher.
