It Is Time to Act for the Lord: Redefining a Minyan for the Sake of Service to God Dear CSZ Family, As of Shabbat on Friday night, May 8, 2020 corresponding to 15 Iyar 5780, Congregation Shaarey Zedek will affirm a minimum of ten Jewish adults who can be seen and heard, either virtually or in-person, as a minyan -- the gathering that constitutes a quorum for public prayer. This decision comes in response to the global pandemic affecting every aspect of our society, and it supersedes previous teshuvot that I have issued regarding our community prayer services. While an in-person communal gathering of prayer is superior to a virtual one, this teshuvah is written with the goal of allowing members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek to more fully feel God’s presence as well as the fellowship of community and, perhaps more importantly, to further strive to serve God with joy and with a sacred sense of purpose (i.e., commandedness). Additionally, this teshuvah is in keeping with Congregation Shaarey Zedek’s efforts toward inclusion by ensuring that those who are unable to attend the synagogue because of health complications or health vulnerabilities are equal to those who are able to attend the synagogue in-person. Jews, Gentiles, and the Modern Egalitarian Ethos: Some Tentative Thoughts David Berger The deep and systemic tension between contemporary egalitarianism and many authoritative Jewish texts about gentiles takes varying forms. Most Orthodox Jews remain untroubled by some aspects of this tension, understanding that Judaism’s affirmation of chosenness and hierarchy can inspire and ennoble without denigrating others. In other instances, affirmations of metaphysical differences between Jews and gentiles can take a form that makes many of us uncomfortable, but we have the legitimate option of regarding them as non-authoritative. Finally and most disturbing, there are positions affirmed by standard halakhic sources from the Talmud to the Shulhan Arukh that apparently stand in stark contrast to values taken for granted in the modern West and taught in other sections of the Torah itself. Let me begin with a few brief observations about the first two categories and proceed to somewhat more extended ruminations about the third. Critics ranging from medieval Christians to Mordecai Kaplan have directed withering fire at the doctrine of the chosenness of Israel. Nonetheless, if we examine an overarching pattern in the earliest chapters of the Torah, we discover, I believe, that this choice emerges in a universalist context. The famous statement in the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 4:5) that Adam was created singly so that no one would be able to say, “My father is greater than yours” underscores the universality of the original divine intent. While we can never know the purpose of creation, one plausible objective in light of the narrative in Genesis is the opportunity to actualize the values of justice and lovingkindness through the behavior of creatures who subordinate themselves to the will 1 of God. -

The wisdom of Torah is a tradition received by Moses from Sinai, and the scholar will analyze it via the methods assigned for its analysis, comparing one matter and another. Even where this does not match natural wisdom, we follow the tradition. Philosophical wisdom is natural, with great scholars who established natural arguments, and in their great wisdom they dug deeper and corrupted (Hosea 9:9) and needed to deny the Torah of Moses, for the Torah is entirely unnatural and revelatory. Regarding this it is stated, 'You shall be pure with HaShem your Gd,' meaning that even if something is outside of natural logic, you should not doubt the received tradition, but walk before Him in purity. -
Teshuvah: Being Your Best Self!
TESHUVAH: BEING YOUR BEST SELF! During the days leading up to and including Rosh Hashanah, we spend a lot of time in shul asking Hashem for forgiveness for things we may have done wrong over the course of the year, and we ask for a successful year, a healthy year, and a peaceful year. Also, we are encouraged to reach out to people who maybe we have not spoken to in a while or people we may have had disagreements with and make amends. We can all think to ourselves and make a list of people who might appreciate a phone call, or might be excited to get a text, or wants to become friends again. The months of Elul and Tishrei which contain Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, focus specifically on the middot and character traits of repentance, charity, and prayer. So let’s explore how we can include this attribute of Teshuvah (Repentance) this Rosh Hashanah season, and why it is so important! Teshuvah) which is translated as Repentance) -תְּׁשּובָה This is the act of us righting a wrong, big or small, and it can take place whether it’s between you and a friend, or you and Hashem! Government officials can learn about proposed and historic legislation, identify their legislator, sign up for alerts and notifications, learn what their legislators are thinking, as well as listen to recordings of committee and floor debates using the platform of interrelated services. This suite services also allow government bodies to more effectively participate in the legislative process. Delivering services and information is the core of what government does. The challenge for government is to meet and exceed expectations by delivering services and information across a variety of channels. Question: How can a Jew promote oneself professionally and socially without violating Jewish norms of modesty (tzi’ni’ut) in communication? Put another way, in light of the fact that in social media people actively seek affirmation (likes, shares, etc.) for their posts and the fact that some jobs even require the generation of such quantifiable affirmations, how can and should a Jew living in this social and professional environment participate in it while still observing traditional Jewish norms regarding modest speech? Answer: Introduction Now that our colleagues, Rabbis David Booth, Brukh Frydman‐Kohl, and Ashira Konisgburg have completed their rabbinic ruling on modesty in dress,1 I intend in this responsum to continue their work in a related area, modesty in communication. In a companion responsum, I will also discuss harmful communication. In this responsum in particular it is important to note at the outset that many of the norms that are discussed could be understood, on the positive end of the spectrum, as either laws obligating a particular form of behavior or, in contrast, as aspirational modes of behavior (middat hassidut), and, on the negative end of the spectrum, some will straddle the line between legally prohibited and permitted but discouraged. -
