CAPACITÉ Special Feature on Combating Invasive Alien Species CAPACITÉ – ISSUE 9 In this issue of Capacité, we turn our focus to invasive alien species (IAS). Several grants in the CEPF Caribbean portfolio are addressing this issue. And with good reason too. According to the CEPF Ecosystem Profile for the June 2014 Caribbean islands hotspot, the spread of invasive aliens is generally consid- ered the greatest threat to the native biodiversity of the region, especially to its endemic species, with invasive aliens recorded in a wide range of habitats throughout the hotspot. We provide an overview of the reserve along with sighting locales, a list of 185 birds with their resident status and abundance, and a list of the available bird habitats. Photographs of habitats and some of the bird species are included. -

Sewlal The University of the West Indies1 Three species of social wasps are found in the whether the wasps came from just one or Bahamas (Elliott, 1985; Elliott & Elliott, 1996; several colonies. Richards, 1978), all with similar ranges. Polistes bahamensis, P. major and Mischocyttarus mexicanus are known from all sizeable islands except Mayaguana and Great Inagua, as well as in at least the southern part of Florida. The latter two are likewise found in Cuba. P. bahamensis (Figure 1)—formerly treated as subspecies of P. exclamans (Snelling, 1983)—is tentatively recorded from Mayaguana on the basis of apparently reliable museum specimens (Elliott & Elliott, 1996), although these authors failed to find it in either Mayaguana or Great Inagua (Figure 2). Our purpose here is to record and comment on its presence on Great Inagua. On 1 January 2011 we found P. bahamensis foragers flying along the sides of a road in the interior of Inagua. Habitat Mapping and Coral Reef Assessments for Hogsty Reef, Little Inagua, and Great Inagua, Bahamas

Renaud, Executive Director http://www.livingoceansfoundation.org All research was performed under a permit obtained from the Bahamas National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) (ref #18/27, 8 December, 2011). No animals were killed or injured during the execution of the project, and no injured or dead marine mammals or turtles were observed. No oil spills occurred from the M/Y Golden Shadow or any of the support vessels, and oil slicks were not observed. The information in this Report summarizes the outcomes of the research conducted during the August, 2011 research mission to Hogsty Reef, Great Inagua and Little Inagua. Information presented in the report includes general methods, the activities conducted during the mission, general trends and observations, analyzed data and recommendations. A single habitat map and bathymetric map developed by NCRI and prepared by Amanda Williams are included for each of the three areas. The full resolution satellite imagery, habitat maps, bathymetric maps and additional data layers are available in a separate GIS database and a hard copy atlas (under production at the date of this report). Each is distinct from the others because each has various endemic groups of plants and animals. FIGURE 2-2 Wallace’s Line was originally developed by Alfred Russel Wallace based on the distribution of animal groups. Those typical of tropical Asia occur on the west side of the line; those typical of Australia and New Guinea occur on the east side of the line. Revision of the Endemic West Indian Genus Melopyrrha from Cuba and the Cayman Islands

Bradley, Alexandra Günther-Calhoun & Daysi Rodríguez Received 18 September 2013 Summary.—Hartert described the Grand Cayman population of Melopyrrha as separate from the Cuban population, but the two forms were considered conspecifc by Bond and later authors. Based on diferences in body size, plumage and vocalisations, we recommend the two populations be treated as separate endemic species: Cuban Bullfnch Melopyrrha nigra on Cuba, Isla de Pinos and cays of the Cuban archipelago, and Cayman Bullfnch M. taylori for Grand Cayman. We present natural history information for both populations. Cuban Bullfnch Melopyrrha nigra occurs in the Cuban archipelago and on Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands (Garrido & García Montaña 1975, AOU 1998, 2012, Rafaele et al. 1998, Bradley & Rey-Millet 2013). Bonaparte described the genus Melopyrrha in 1853 based on Loxia nigra named by Linnaeus. Cuban Bullfnch, called Negrito in Cuba and Black Sparrow in the Cayman Islands, was described by Linnaeus in 1758 under the name Loxia nigra, based on material from Cuba. In his earliest works, Gundlach (1856, 1876) was unaware that the bullfnch’s range extended to the Cayman Islands, but mentioned Grand Cayman in a later (1893: 110) publication, as did Cory (1892: 112). The Cayman population was considered the same as the Cuban taxon until Hartert (1896) described the Grand Cayman population as Melopyrrha taylori. Miles In a rapidly changing world, species are faced with habitat alteration, changing climate and weather patterns, changing community interactions, novel resources, novel dangers, and a host of other natural and anthropogenic challenges. Conservationists endeavor to understand how changing ecology will impact local populations and local communities so efforts and funds can be allocated to those taxa/ecosystems exhibiting the greatest need. Ecological morphological and functional morphological research form the foundation of our understanding of selection-driven morphological evolution. Studies which identify and describe ecomorphological or functional morphological relationships will improve our fundamental understanding of how taxa respond to ecological selective pressures and will improve our ability to identify and conserve those aspects of nature unable to cope with rapid change. The New World wood warblers (family Parulidae) exhibit extensive taxonomic, behavioral, ecological, and morphological variation. -

Cuba’s Western Mountains, Zapata Peninsula, Northern Archipelago, Escambray Valley and Havana Spring Migration Cuba Bird Survey April 1 – 11/12, 2017 You are invited on an exclusive, U.S. led and managed birding program to Cuba! The program is managed by the Caribbean Conservation Trust, Inc. (CCT), which is based in Connecticut. In early 2016 CCT staff began their 20th year of managing bird conservation and natural history programs in Cuba. Along with CCT Ornithologist Michael Good, our team will include award -winning Cuban biologist Ernesto Reyes, a bilingual Cuban tour leader and local naturalists in 4 different birding regions. They will guide you through some of the best bird habitat in Cuba, the Caribbean’s largest and most ecologically diverse island nation. CCT designed this itinerary to take you to Cuba’s finest bird habitats, most beautiful national parks, diverse biosphere reserves, and unique natural areas. We will interact with local scientists and naturalists who work in research and conservation. In addition to birding, we will learn about the ecology and history of regions we visit. Finally, and especially given the ongoing changes in U.S. – Cuban relations, we can expect some degree of inquiry into fascinating aspects of Cuban culture, history, and daily living during our visit. Cuba’s Birds According to BirdLife International, which has designated 28 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Cuba, “Over 370 bird species have been recorded in Cuba, including 27 which are endemic to the island and 29 considered globally threatened. Due to its large land area and geographical position within the Caribbean, Cuba represents one of the most important countries for Neotropical migratory birds – both birds passing through on their way south (75 species) and those spending the winter on the island (86 species).“ Our itinerary provides opportunities to see many of Cuba’s endemic species and subspecies, as listed below. -
