Ag Districts Get Focus in Battle for Congress
April 15, 2020 Volume 16, Number 15 Ag districts get focus in battle for Congress If Republicans have any hope of winning control of the U.S. House this fall, they’ll have to start by winning a series of major agricultural districts Democrats won in 2018. Of the top 100 House districts in terms of farm production, seven are rated as toss-ups by the Cook Political Report. Six of the seven are held by Democrats, including House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson's 7th District seat in Minnesota. The influential chairmanship is held in high regard - a title he could retain unless the House flips back to Republican. The lone Republican tossup seat belongs to Rep. Rodney Davis, whose 13th District in central Illinois includes the university towns of Champaign and Urbana as well as swath of one of the nation’s most productive corn and soybean-growing regions. Three of the tossup ag seats are next door in Iowa, including seats that first-term Reps. Cindy Axne and Abby Finkenauer won in 2018 by ousting GOP incumbents. The third Iowa seat is being vacated by Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack. The two other tossup seats are in California and New Mexico. In California’s 21st District, which ranks fourth nationally in farm revenue according to the latest Agriculture Department census, first-term Rep. TJ Cox faces a rematch with Republican David Valadao, whom Cox ousted in 2018. www.Agri-Pulse.com 1 In New Mexico’s 2nd District, which covers the southern half of the state, first-term Democratic Rep. -

Part 16, American Oversight makes the following request for records. In response to congressional demands, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions represented that he had ordered U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah John Huber to evaluate certain matters raised in letters from members of Congress—seemingly regarding DOJ actions related to the 2016 election and the actions of Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.1 Despite the sensitive and politically-charged nature of Attorney General Sessions’s directive to U.S. Attorney Huber, little is known about the actual scope of Mr. Huber’s investigation.2 Representative Mark Meadows indicated that Mr. Huber would be testifying before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s Sub-Committee on Government Operations regarding his investigation, but Mr. Huber did not, in the end, offer public testimony.3 1 See Letter from Jeff Sessions, Attorney General, U.S. Dep’t of Justice, to Chuck Grassley, Chairman, U.S. Senate, Comm. on the Judiciary, Bob Goodlatte, Chairman, U.S. House of Representatives, Comm. on the Judiciary & Trey Gowdy, Chairman, U.S. House of Representatives, Comm. on Oversight & Government Reform, Mar. 29, 2018, https://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2018/images/03/29/ag.letter.re.ig.and.huber.reviews.pdf. -

Cummings Chairman Committee on Oversight and Reform 2157 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Mr. Chairman: This letter follows up on your commitment to ensure Michael Cohen testified truthfully at the Committee's hearing titled, "Hearing with Michael Cohen, Former Attorney for President Donald Trump," on February 27, 2019. 1 As Chairman, it is your obligation to ensure that witnesses are not permitted to lie with impunity when testifying before the Committee. During the hearing, following Cohen's oath to testify truthfully, you explained to the Committee that you privately admonished Cohen about truthfulness. You warned him "if he [Cohen] came in here and lied I would nail him to the cross."2 You then confirmed this statement with Cohen himself, asking "Didn' t I tell you that?'>:J Cohen replied, "Yes, you did more than once."4 Mr. Chairman, there is now clear and indisputable evidence that Cohen did not testify truthfully before the Committee. We expect you will now follow through with your commitment to hold Cohen accountable. Following the hearing, we wrote to Attorney General William Barr referring Cohen for a perjury investigation regarding six areas of problematic testimony, including Cohen's testimony that he did not want a role in the Trump Administration.5 In light of mounting evidence, it appears Cohen likely lied under oath during his appearance before the Committee. -

How Wall Street Supports Racist Politicians and Enables White Supremacy
March 2019 BANKROLLING HATE: How Wall Street Supports Racist Politicians and Enables White Supremacy By Alyxandra Goodwin & Carrie Sloan EXECUTIVE SUMMARY White supremacy and white nationalism are ascendant in the Trump era,1 and many elected officials and candidates running for office have been emboldened to rip the mask of politeness off their racist, xenophobic, sexist, and homophobic ideologies.2 The finance industry is aiding and abetting the rise of violent white supremacy and nationalism by donating to the congressional campaigns of candidates who have expressed viciously racist, xenophobic, sexist, and homophobic views. Lobbying Groups Like the American Bankers Association Carry Water for Big Banks The financial sector—classified by the U.S. Census Bureau as finance, insurance, and real estate, or FIRE—is the largest donor to federal parties and candidates.3 Wall Street banks, like JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, make their own donations but also rely on trade and lobbying groups, such as the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the American Financial Services Association (AFSA), to carry water for them. THE FOUL FOUR: The Intersection of Wall Street’s Deregulation Agenda and Overt White Supremacy In this report, we identify four particularly repugnant candidates whom Wall Street has financially supported in recent election cycles. We call these candidates the Foul Four. The four GOP candidates we highlight all ran for election or reelection in November 2018, with substantial support from Wall Street. The four have all embraced Trumpism, and their campaigns received significant backing from the finance industry generally and the ABA especially. Lou Barletta (R-PA), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Greg Gianforte (R-MT), and Steve King (R-IA) have voted in line with Trump between 80 and 99 percent of the time.4 All have cast votes that are anti-choice, anti-immigrant, or anti-Black, and each has aligned himself with or associated with known white supremacists or members of the racist so-called “alt-right”. -

The race to fill Montana's sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives took a violent turn Wednesday, and a crew from the Fox News Channel, including myself, witnessed it firsthand. As part of our preparation for a story about Thursday's special election to air on "Special Report with Bret Baier," we arranged interviews with the top two candidates, Republican Greg Gianforte and Democrat Rob Quist. On Wednesday, I joined field producer Faith Mangan and photographer Keith Railey in Bozeman for our scheduled interview with Gianforte, which was to take place at the Gianforte for Congress Bozeman Headquarters. Faith, Keith and I arrived early to set up for the interview in a room adjacent to another room where a volunteer BBQ was to take place.
