For that reason, I am writing the “BAD WEATHER” article a little earlier this year. Hopefully I am not jinxing SShip'ship' s LLogog us…YIKES!!! Last year, we didn’t see an abundance of snow, but I spent more road time than usual evaluating conditions when we had freezing rain PPageage 2:2: HHomecomingomecoming and/or mild to moderate icing events…it was horrible. There always seemed to be just enough to scare me, but not enough to call off PPageage 3:3: NNewew TeacherTeacher school. Ideally, if we are going to have bad weather, I want it to be an SpotlightSpotlight easy call. You know…the 6”-8” where there is very little deliberation. The potential for .05”-.10” of ice that may start to accumulate between PPageage 4:4: StayStay AnchoredAnchored 4:00 AM-6:00 AM, is the worst type of condition to evaluate. Regardless of what weather we see, you still need to be informed on how we will communicate delays, early-outs, cancellations, and PPageage 5:5: ClippersClippers FromFrom closures. Blaine is currently not married and has two daughters, Courtney at age 34 and Alison at age 31. He enjoys hunting, fishing and having a connection to the wildlife. Mr. Cullinan has stated that he didn’t start out with the ideal thought of teaching in mind, instead he was involved in ranching, such as livestock, and a farming operations. Towards the age of 40 was when Blaine started his journey of teaching. He attended Arthur County High School, in Western Nebraska, and received an elementary degree from Chadron State College along with a secondary and masters degree from UNL. Mr. Cullinan is currently teaching pre-algebra, algebra, and algebra 2. These classes involve 8th graders up to a few seniors. This year he will be coaching Jr. High boys and girls basketball. In the past he has coached volleyball and track which he really enjoyed. He says that he really likes Malcolm and its school system so far, finding it quite simple, but understanding and helpful. Blaine mentioned that the students, staff and administration have been very supportive and helpful to him, as the students have been great kids and are easy to get along with. Overall, Mr. Blaine Cullinan appreciates those who have been friendly and helpful to him and looks forward to teaching in Malcolm Public Schools for years to come. page 3 10004 nw 112th st, malcolm, ne 68402 www.malcolmschools.org Stay Anchored® September Winners˖ malcolm public schools “the clipper” october 4, 2018 page 4 ...Continued From Front Page 5. School Website If the determination to cancel school can be made the night before, I will make the call by 10:00 p.m. I realize that this scenario is preferable to all, and will be done if at all possible. However, there are times when the weather is not unbearable by 10:00 p.m. In those instances, the call will be made by 6:00 a.m. the day of school. On those days, you will only receive a call if we have a late start or a cancellation. Finally, I want you to know that student safety is our number one priority, but there will be times that school will be in session during moderately poor weather. At any point, as a parent, you have the right to keep you children home if you do not feel conditions are safe. This is far from an exact science, but we try our best to balance safety with having the children in school. The Westfall students are having a great (and sometimes downright noisy) time working with our new Malcolm SmartCart. Funded through a grant obtained by the Nebraska Educational Technology Association, we built the SmartCart to engage students in meaningful learning experiences that encourage their creativity. In addition, the cart is completely mobile, allowing it to be used in the classrooms and the high school library as well. Our kindergarten through 6th grade students have the opportunity to explore activities on the cart every Friday they are in the library. The Osmo device to introduce students to coding using a collaborative gaming environment. The Brainflakes and Kinex are paired with books on planning, design, and architecture. 3D pens have been fun for the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to use to bring their creations off the page. Our Sphero robot and Snap Circuits allow students to explore robotics and inventions. With these digital tools, we can empower students to become producers rather than just consumers of technology. malcolm public schools “the clipper” october 4, 2018 page 6 Second Grade News By: Wendy Beatty Lots of fun things have been happening during our first weeks in 2nd grade! We read a camping story and had our very own classroom camp out. Our study of Malcolm Then & Now ended with a community walk through Malcolm and playing at the parks. We studied the life cycle of a butterfly and hatched Painted Lady butterflies in our room. We are very lucky to have a classroom set of Ipads. This technology allows us to take our learningearning further and document what we discover. SeesawSeesaw is used daily and it is an amazing tool that allowsallows us to show our parents what we are doing in our classroom. We weree able to document the life cycle of our butterflies using Seesaw. PicCollage isis an app we used after we talked about community helpers. We took picturesures in our “job hats” and made a digital collage about our job. Math apps are used daily. Some of our favorites are Prodigy, King of Math, and Flashh to Pass. We are able to use IXL on our Ipads to help strengthen math andnd language arts skills. Epic and Storyline Online are two of our favoritete reading apps. We love reading and listening to stories. Kahoot is ann exciting quiz game that asks us questions about what we are learning.. When we click the right answer we can move up the leaderboard. We get very excited when we hear the Kahoot music start. This is just the start of all the awesome activities we will use our Ipads for this year. We love technology! Health Classes BY: Mr.
