May 5, 2016 for Immediate Release APARNA NANCHERLA May 5, 2016 For Immediate Release APARNA NANCHERLA ANNOUNCES DEBUT COMEDY RECORD, JUST PUTTING IT OUT THERE, OUT 7/8 INAUGURAL RELEASE FOR TIG NOTARO'S NEW SECRETLY CANADIAN IMPRINT, BENTZEN BALL RECORDS WATCH A TEASER VIDEO Today, Secretly Canadian has two big announcements. First off, they're excited to announce the formation of the new stand-up comedy imprint Bentzen Ball Records, which will be helmed by none other than Tig Notaro. You can read an exclusive interview with Tig about her new label on Billboard. The second big (and very related) news is that the inaugural release for Bentzen Ball Records will be the debut album from the hilarious Aparna Nancherla, entitled Just Putting This Out There, and will be released on July 8th. A familiar face at festivals across North America, Nancherla was most recently a staff writer at NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. Additional credits include Conan, numerous Comedy Central appearances, Last Comic Standing, NPR, MTV, VH1, Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Podcast and WTF with Marc Maron. Nancherla never considered recording an album before Tig Notaro encouraged her to take the plunge. The two first met at 2009’s Notaro-curated inaugural Bentzen Ball in D.C.; six years later Nancherla opened for Notaro’s historic New York Comedy Festival performance. The latter bared her mastectomy scars onstage at The Town Hall Theater, an experience Nancherla describes as “amazingly powerful.” When Notaro decided to launch her own Bentzen Ball Records, Nancherla was the first comedian invited to join the new label. Nancherla puts bold, incisive twists on food, travel, technology and more on debut Just Putting This Out There. As her trademark one-liner “Don’t you think any pizza can be a personal one if you cry while you eat it?” illustrates, Nancherla subverts live comedy’s traditional setup-punchline structure to comment on the very art form she pursues. She not only embraces substance over style, she mines unexpected substance from style itself. Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

  • Women in Comedy
WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans.

  • For Tig Notaro's Stand-Up
Tulane University Tulane 'stands up' for Tig Notaro's stand-up October 07, 2015 12:00 PM Claire Davenport [email protected] Tig Notaro shot to stardom as a comedian after she was blindsided by a health crisis and the death of her mother, a New Orleanian, in 2012. The documentary Tig (2015) chronicles the surprising results that ensued when she chose to confront “the worst four months of her life” head-on through her comedy. An HBO comedy special called "Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted" was released in August 2015. She got laughs and cheers from Tulane students and community members during her performance in McAlister Auditorium on Tuesday (Oct. 6). (Photo by Scott McDermott/HBO) Tig Notaro is not the type of comedian to stick to a script during her stand-up. For most of her show in McAlister Auditorium on the Tulane University uptown campus Tuesday (Oct. 6), she interacted with the audience. “Is the girl from Whole Foods in the audience?” Notaro shouted at one point into the crowd. “Thanks for letting me know where to go for my performance.” At the end of her show, she shook her head and laughed at the standing ovation she received. “Sit down guys please, I"m just a normal person ⦠here, you can touch my arm,” she said, reaching out into the crowd. Notaro may call herself “just a normal person,” but she has achieved national recognition as a comedian. She is on Rolling Stone"s “List of 50 Funniest People in America,” and appeared on many comedy shows including “The Sarah Silverman Project” and “Conan O"Brien.” Tulane University | New Orleans | 504-865-5210 | [email protected] Tulane University While known for her stand-up, she is known for addressing heavier topics through humor.
