Dear Friend: Please help us beat last year’s fundraising record by donating to our 5th Annual 2017 Comedy For A Cause Auction and Benefit Show for PS11 The William T Harris Elementary School, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. PS 11 is a wonderfully diverse school with a large percentage of the population qualifying for “free lunch”. The Department of Education provides the basics, but it’s up to the community to provide everything else. The PS11 PTA has made it their mission to make up for this shortfall and more with innovative fundraisers like Comedy For A Cause. Over the past four years, our comedy benefit has raised enough money to enable the PTA to pay for all the school supplies for over 900 students, enrichment programs in the arts (Rioult dance, Rosie's Theater Kids, Julliard Music, Circle in the Square playwriting, etc.), additional teachers to help reduce class size, math and literacy consultants, teacher development and so much more. PS11 was chosen by the New York City Schools Chancellor as a Model School to partner up with two other elementary schools to show them how they can improve practices. Each year, our comedy benefit sells out in a matter of hours. We’ve featured top national talent including Gilbert Gottfried, John Oliver, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Susie Essman, Michael Che, Dave Attell, Artie Lange, Judy Gold, Donnell Rawlings and many more. This year’s event will be held at Gotham Comedy Club in NYC on Tuesday, February 7, 2017.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

  • 1 Who Brings the Funny? 3 Mirroring the Political Climate: Satire in History
Notes 1 Who Brings the Funny? 1 . Obscenity, incitement to violence, and threatening the life of the president are several examples of restrictions on expression. 2 . There have been several cases of threats against political cartoonists and comedians made by Islamic extremists who felt their religion was being mocked. These examples include (but are not limited to) the Danish political cartoonist who drew a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, the creators of South Park who pretended to, and David Letterman who mocked Al Qaida. 3 Mirroring the Political Climate: Satire in History 1 . I urge readers to review K. J. Dover’s (1974) and Jeffrey Henderson’s (1980) work on Aristophanes, and see Peter Green (1974) and Susanna Morton Braund (2004). Other work on Juvenal includes texts by Gilbert Highet (1960) and J. P. Sullivan (1963). I have also been directed by very smart people to Ralph M. Rosen, Making Mockery: The Poetics of Ancient Satire, (New York: Oxford University Press, 2 0 0 7 ) . 2 . Apparently, the “definitive” Pope prose is found in the volume edited by Ault and Cowler (Oxford: Blackwell, 1936–1986), and the “definitive” text for Gay’s poetry is edited by Dearing (Oxford: Clarendon, 1974). 3. The best collection from Swift comes from Cambridge Press: English Political Writings 1711–1714, edited by Goldgar (2008). Thanks to Dr. Sharon Harrow for her assistance in finding this authoritative resource. 4 . The most authoritative biographies of Franklin are from Isaacson (2003) and Brands (2002), and I recommend readers look to these two authors for more information on one of the most fascinating of our founding fathers.

There's nothing funny about it. But survival, and what it takes to survive, there can be humor in that.” -Rob Reiner, Director “I am…privy to many of the films that are released on a yearly basis about the Holocaust. I cannot think of one project that has taken the approach of THE LAST LAUGH. THE LAST LAUGH dispels the notion that there is nothing new to say or to reveal on the subject because this aspect of survival is one that very few have explored in print and no one that I know of has examined in a feature documentary.” -Richard Tank, Executive Director at the Simon Wiesenthal Center SHORT SYNOPSIS THE LAST LAUGH is a feature documentary about what is taboo for humor, seen through the lens of the Holocaust and other seemingly off-limits topics, in a society that prizes free speech.
