03 July 2011 • 07 Pastoral Visit to the Philippines (Part 1). Our second pastoral visit after Thailand was to the Lasallian Family in the Philippines from 16 – 27 June 2011. Opening of Centenary Celebrations. June 16 in 1911 marked the first day of classes in La Salle College Manila and so this was the designated date for the beginning of the centennial celebrations in the Philippines. The high mass was at the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel of De La Salle University presided over by Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales and concelebrated by around 20 priests who had some affiliation with La Salle. Homilist was Bishop Chito Tagle. It began with the enshrinement of the relics of the Founder. After mass President Benigno C. Aguino III graced the occasion and gave his remarks to a packed crowd of Filipino Lasallians. Aside from De La Salle University, 16 other La Salle schools in the Philippines had their own opening rites. Check out YouTube videos Community Visits. After the opening of the Centennial year, Br. Thomas and I took the opportunity to do our pastoral visit to some of the communities in the Luzon area. First was De La Salle University Brothers’ Community from the 17th to the 19th of June. There are nine Brothers in the community but only three work at De La Salle University. Br. Jun Erguiza is President but tries to divide his time with two other institutions, De La Salle Araneta University (DLSAU) and De La Salle Canlubang; Br. Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools Bulletin no. 252 - 2010 Lasallian Centers of Higher Education January 2010 Brothers of the Christian Schools Generalate Via Aurelia 476 00165 Rome, Italie Coordination: Claude Reinhardt, fsc, General Councillor Design and Lay-out: José A. Warletta, fsc Translation coordinator: Bernardo Montes, fsc 2 BULLETIN FSC, nº 252 - 2010 La Salle University! Where? Some months back, a European Brother asked me whether we had not made a mis- take in one of our Institute educational statistics by speaking about more than 70 institutions of higher education throughout the world. ‘No’, I replied, ‘the infor- mation is correct.’ In fact, depending on whether you live in one region of the world or another, the Lasallian presence in higher education is very different. In recent years, in addition to older and better known foundations, institu- tions have been added in new urban zones or in those deprived of centres of education (for example in the Philippines or in Latin America) which, in addition to traditional studies, propose new courses of study adapted to present day local needs. And so, under the heading “higher education” we need to include several cycles of higher education, offered in ‘Colleges’ or Universities, if they lead to a Doctorate. There are also Schools of Engineering or Polytechnic Institutes. There are also short post-secondary school cycles but within the limited framework of this Bulletin we will not go into details of description. The overall Lasallian world does not always know these institutions since the world of higher has its rhythms, its laws and its structures, its specialized contents of teaching and research, its projects and its social solidarities.
