Join one of the Q&M Tours half- or full-day excursions to sample some of these experiences. Experiences could also be tailored according to client requirements. We make use of local guides to ensure an authentic experience. Full-Day Modjadji and Dan Village Experience: You will be collected from your hotel or guest house in Tzaneen before heading towards Modjadji for a guided tour of the Modjadji Royal Kraal. This will be followed by a visit to the Modjadji Cycad Reserve where a picnic lunch will be served (included). After lunch we travel via Tzaneen to Dan Village, where we visit the homestead of the late Neverdie Mushwana, where two of the wives are practicing sangomas (traditional healers) taking after their legendary husband who was a respected powerful healer and clairvoyant. We stop for sundowners at a shebeen in Nkowankowa (own account) before returning to Tzaneen. Price per person: R1 612 (minimum 4 passengers) Duration: 8 hours Departure time: 8:00am Full-Day Magoebaskloof and Haenertsburg Experience: You will be collected from your hotel or guest house in Tzaneen before heading towards the mountains. We travel up the Georges Valley to Magoebaskloof Adventures, where we zip-line down the Greater Letaba River Gorge. After this exhilarating adventure, we travel further towards Haenertsburg, where we have lunch at one of the restaurants (own account) and spend some time in the village, including a visit to the small museum. After lunch we head up to the Haenertsburg cemetery for the most amazing views across the Ebenezer Dam for a photo opportunity before leaving the village for Zwakala Brewery, where we do a short tour of this craft brewery and taste some of the product. There is also an opportunity to buy crafts made from invasive alien plants (own account). After spending some time enjoying the mountain hospitality, we head back to Tzaneen – stopping halfway down the Magoebaskloof pass at the viewpoint en route. Price per person: R2 008 (minimum 4 passengers) Duration: 8 hours Departure time: 8:30am Full-Day Giyani Cultural Craft Experience: You will be collected from your hotel or guest house in Tzaneen before heading towards Giyani. The first stop is the Mapuve Pottery where we learn about the art of making pots in the traditional manner. From there we head to the vibrant CBD of Giyani, where we have lunch and have an opportunity to buy local crafts. After lunch we head to Hihlurile Pot of Beads centre where we learn about traditional Tsonga beadwork and embroidery before returning to Tzaneen. Price per person: R2 115 (minimum 4 passengers) Duration: 10 hours Departure time: 7:30am Full-Day Giyani Cultural Heritage Experience: You will be collected from your hotel or guest house in Tzaneen before heading towards Giyani. The first stop is the Baleni Sautini heritage site where salt is still extracted in the traditional manner. From there we head to the vibrant CBD of Giyani, where we have lunch and have an opportunity to buy local crafts. After lunch we head to Thomo Heritage Park, a traditional Living Iron Age Cultural Village showcasing a Tsonga traditional village homestead layout, traditional structures and objects. We experience live demonstration of customs and living heritage traditions before returning to Tzaneen. If the minimum number of bookings is not achieved, Q & M Tours retains the right to cancel the tour and refund the clients that have booked and paid Bookings can be confirmed with the payment of a 50% deposit. In the event of a booking being made less than 7 days before the tour departure date, a 100% deposit is required to secure the booking.     THE HISTORY OF THE PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject JUDAICA at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: MR CEDRIC GINSBERG NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY Jews were present in Pietersburg [Polokwane] from the time of its establishment in 1868. They came from Lithuania, England and Germany. They were attracted by the discovery of gold, land and work opportunities. The first Jewish cemetery was established on land granted by President Paul Kruger in 1895. The Zoutpansberg Hebrew Congregation, which included Pietersburg and Louis Trichardt was established around 1897. In 1912, Pietersburg founded its own congregation, the Pietersburg Hebrew Congregation. A Jewish burial society, a benevolent society and the Pietersburg-Zoutpansberg Zionist Society was formed. A communal hall was built in 1921 and a synagogue in 1953. Jews contributed to the development of Pietersburg and held high office. There was little anti-Semitism. From the 1960s, Jews began moving to the cities. The communal hall and minister’s house were sold in 1994 and the synagogue in 2003.     Chapter Households’ Adaptation to Climate Change Hazards in Semi-Arid Region of Mopani, South Africa Musa Yusuf Jimoh, Peter Bikam, Hector Chikoore, James Chakwizira and Emaculate Ingwani Abstract New climate change realities are no longer a doubtful phenomenon, but realities to adapt and live with. Its cogent impacts and implications’ dispositions pervade all sectors and geographic scales, making no sector or geographic area immune, nor any human endeavor spared from the associated adversities. The consequences of this emerging climate order are already manifesting, with narratives written beyond the alterations in temperature and precipitation, particularly in urban areas of semi-arid region of South Africa. The need to better understand and respond to the new climate change realities is particularly acute in this region. Thus, this chapter highlights the concept of adaptation as a fundamental component of managing cli- mate change vulnerability, through identifying and providing insight in respect of some available climate change adaptation models and how these models fit within the premises and programmes of sustainable adaptation in semi-arid region with gaps identification. The efforts of governments within the global context are exam- ined with households’ individual adaptation strategies to climate change hazards in Mopani District. The factors hindering the success of sustainable urban climate change adaptation strategic framework and urban households’ adaptive systems are also subjects of debate and constitute the concluding remarks to the chapter. Its effects are expected to be severely differ- ent across segments of the society. It is disposed to leaving no facet of human endeavor immune, particularly in vulnerable cities of developing countries where there is dearth of empirical studies. For the context-specific nature of climate change impacts and place-based character of vulnerability, this study explores the influence of socioeconomic attributes on household vulnerability in Mopani District northeast of South Africa to provide basis for targeting, formulating, evaluating, and moni- toring adaptation policies, programs, and projects. The study adopted a multistage random sampling to draw 500 households from six towns in Mopani District, Limpopo Province. Mixed methods approach was used for data collection, while Household Vulnerability Index (HVI) was estimated using principal component analysis and regressed with socioeconomic attributes. The study reveals that climate is changing with high HVI across selected towns.
