(Univision), or its station WXNY-FM (licensed to WADO-AM License Corp., a subsidiary of Univision), aired Emergency Alert System (EAS) tones during the January 28, 2014 episode of the Luis Jimenez Show, in the absence of an actual emergency or authorized test of the EAS. 2. The EAS is the national public warning system that requires broadcasters, cable television operators, wireline video service providers, satellite digital audio radio service providers, and direct broadcast satellite providers to supply the communications capability to the President of the United States to address the American public during a national emergency. Federal, state, and local authorities may also use the EAS to deliver emergency information, such as AMBER alerts and weather information targeted to specific areas. To preserve the unique purpose of the EAS tones, the Commission enforces laws prohibiting the use of the tones, or simulations of them, except in actual emergencies or authorized tests of the EAS. These distinctive tones are well-known warning signals to the public, and the laws governing use of the EAS tones apply irrespective of the language used by the entity that transmits the tones. -

Most analyses of public radio listening examine the performance of individual stations within this large mix, the contributions of specific national programs, or aggregate numbers for the system as a whole. This report takes a different approach. Through an extensive, multi-year study of 228 stations that generate about 80% of public radio’s audience, we review patterns of listening to groups of stations categorized by the formats that they present. We find that stations that pursue different format strategies – news, classical, jazz, AAA, and the principal combinations of these – have experienced significantly different patterns of audience growth in recent years and important differences in key audience behaviors such as loyalty and time spent listening. This quantitative study complements qualitative research that the Station Resource Group, in partnership with Public Radio Program Directors, and others have pursued on the values and benefits listeners perceive in different formats and format combinations. Key findings of The Public Radio Format Study include: • In a time of relentless news cycles and a near abandonment of news by many commercial stations, public radio’s news and information stations have seen a 55% increase in their average audience from Spring 1999 to Fall 2004. -

BACKGROUND: For nearly a century, The Durst Organization Inc. has been a fami- ly-run real estate company. Founded in 1915, Durst is a developer, owner, and manager of commercial properties in Manhattan. The company helped establish the East Side of Midtown as a commercial district with a series of office buildings built along Third Ave- nue in the 1950s and 1960s, and led the transformation of Sixth Avenue into Manhattan’s premier corporate thoroughfare in the 1970s. Durst built the nation’s first green skyscrap- er, Four Times Square, and one of the world’s most advanced commercial towers, One Bryant Park. Project Overview The Real World Foundation/Asthma Free School Zone CB3-Con Edison project plan aims to provide air quality improvements and related educational services to residents in the Manhattan Community Board 3 area. This year our project is focusing on three areas of activity: 1.) Lesson Plan Development Lesson Plans: During the grant period, AFSZ developed lesson plans focused on asthma and air quality for kindergarten through 12th grade. The lesson plans integrate content and skills from multiple subject areas, including math, science, English Language Arts, social studies, visual art, and health. The lessons are matched to NYC DOE standards within content areas; high school lessons are matched with Regents curricula for the sciences. A total of 26 lesson plans were written for the following grade groupings: • Kindergarten • Grades 1-2 • Grades 3-5 • Grades 6-8 • Grades 9-12 For each of the elementary and middle school grade groupings, five lessons were written. -

Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition. -

A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son.
