In this paper, we consider an isometric immersion ' :(M; h) ! (N; h), of a Riemannian manifold (M; g) of dimension m, into another Riemannian manifold (N; h) of dimension n = m + 1. Chen's conjecture (cf. [3], [2]): Let ' :(M; g) ! (N; h) be an isometric immersion, and the sec- tional curvature of (N; h) is non-positive. If ' is biharmonic (cf. See Sect. 2), then, it is minimal. Assume that (M; g) is a complete Riemannian mani- fold of dimension m and (N; h) is a Riemannian manifold of dimension m+1 whose Ricci curvature is non-positive. If an isometricR immersion ! 2 1 ' :(M; g) (N; h) is biharmonic and satisfies that M H vg < , then, ' is minimal. By our Corollary 1.2, if there would exist a counter example (cf. [10]) in the case dim N = dim M + 1, then it must hold that Z 2 H vg = 1; (1.3) M which imposes the strong condition on the behaviour of the boundary of M at infinity. Indeed, (1:3) implies that either H is unbounded on M, or it holds that H2 ≥ C on an open subset Ω of M with infinite volume, for some constant C > 0. 2. Preliminaries. In this section, we prepare general materials about harmonic maps and biharmonic maps of a complete Riemannian manifold into another Riemannian manifold (cf. [4]). Let (M; g) be an m-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold, and the target space (N; h) is an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We survey some recent results on biconservative surfaces in 3-di- mensional space forms N 3(c) with a special emphasis on the c = 0 and c = 1 cases. We study the local and global properties of such surfaces, from extrinsic and intrinsic point of view. We obtain all non-CMC complete biconservative 3 3 surfaces in R and S . 1. Introduction The study of submanifolds with constant mean curvature, i.e., CMC submani- folds, and, in particular, that of CMC surfaces in 3-dimensional spaces, represents a very active research topic in Differential Geometry for more than 50 years. There are several ways to generalize these submanifolds. For example, keeping the CMC hypothesis and adding other geometric hypotheses to the submanifold or, by contrast, in the particular case of hypersurfaces in space forms, studying the hypersurfaces which are \highly non-CMC". The biconservative submanifolds seem to be an interesting generalization of CMC submanifolds. Biconservative submanifolds in arbitrary manifolds (and in particu- lar, biconservative surfaces) which are also CMC have some remarkable properties (see, for example [10, 18, 22, 28]). CMC hypersurfaces in space forms are triv- ially biconservative, so more interesting is the study of biconservative hypersurfaces which are non-CMC; recent results in non-CMC biconservative hypersurfaces were obtained in [12, 19, 21, 29, 30]. The biconservative submanifolds are closely related to the biharmonic submani- folds. For hypersurfaces, we know from Chen and Jiang that the conjecture is true for biharmonic surfaces in E3. Also, Hasanis and Vlachos proved that biharmonic hypersurfaces in E4; and Dimitric proved that biharmonic hypersurfaces in Em with at most two distinct principal curvatures. Chen and Munteanu showed that the conjecture is true for d(2)-ideal and d(3)-ideal hypersurfaces in Em. Further, Fu proved that the conjecture is true for hypersurfaces with three distinct principal curvatures in Em with arbitrary m. In this article, we provide another solution to the conjecture, namely, we prove that biharmonic surfaces do not exist in any Euclidean space with parallel normalized mean curvature vectors. We prove a Liouville-type theorem for biharmonic maps from a complete Rie- mannian manifold of dimension n that has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and positive injectivity radius into a Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded from above. Under these geometric assumptions we show that if the Lp-norm of the tension field is bounded and the n-energy of the map is sufficiently small then every biharmonic map must be harmonic, where 2 <p<n. 1. Introduction and Results Harmonic maps belong to the most studied variational problems in differential geometry. They are defined as critical points of the Dirichlet energy 2 E1(φ)= |dφ| dV, (1.1) ZM where φ: M → N is a map between the two Riemannian manifolds (M, h) and (N, g). The critical points of (1.1) are characterized by the vanishing of the so-called tension field, which is given by 0= τ(φ) := trh∇dφ. For a recent survey on harmonic maps see [4]. A natural generalization of the harmonic map equation are the so-called biharmonic maps.
