CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF TAMILNADU Thiruvarur Department of Music and Fine Arts ORGANISES TWO - DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ON CONTRIBUTION OF TRINITY TO KARNATAKA MUSIC February 5th & 6th, 2018 Central University of Tamil Nadu The Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur was inaugurated on 30th September 2009. It functions with quality infrastructure facilities in two campuses set in a serene atmosphere in the Neelakkudi and Nagakkudi villages in the Cauvery delta region. River Vettaru flows in between the two campuses. The Administrative building, academic buildings, Library, Hostels and Auditorium are housed in the Neelakkudi campus and residential quarters, guest house and Kendriya Vidyalaya are in the Nagakkudi campus. Both Campuses are nestled in a vast, verdant paddy tract, tucked far away from the madding crowds of urban sites. The University offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Integrated Masters and Doctoral degree Programmes in various subjects through 22 Departments under the Schools of Social Sciences & Humanities, Basic & Applied Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Sciences, Communication, Technology, Education & Training, Commerce and Management, Behavioural and Earth Sciences and Performing Arts. CUTN is an unique family with students, staff and faculty representing from different parts of the country. The University atmosphere offers a creative and multicultural learning atmosphere for the students with dynamic curricular and extracurricular activities. Department of Music and Fine Arts The Department of Music and Fine Arts has stepped into its maiden year with a four year UG course B.P.A (Bachelor of Performing Arts) in Music, designed according to the Choice Based Credit system (CBCS). Besides Karnataka Music compositions, Devotional songs, Folk songs, Patriotic songs and songs for Dance and Harikatha etc., a student has an option to learn playing any of the instruments, viz., Veena, Violin or Mridangam. Under electives, students can also learn basics of Hindustani Music, Western Music, Regional Music of India, Music and Technology, Indian Culture and Sanskrit and Dravidian scripts. In the final semester, a student is trained to perform a Classical Concert for an hour’s duration. The Department is equipped with “SMART CLASSROOM”, to enable a better platform for Music learning and research and also enroll for Online Courses / MOOC through SWAYAM. Thus a student is made to shine with multi- faceted knowledge of Music. Further Music is offered as a Generic Elective subject to the students of other Departments of CUTN, which has drawn a large number of students showing interest to learn music. Following years, Post Graduation and Research degrees are on roadmap that will bring higher specialities in Music. Trinity of Karnataka Music Sri Syama Sastri, Sri Tyagaraja and Sri Muttuswamy Dikshita are the three masters of South Indian Music, who were born in the divine land of Thiruvarur. They lived during the 18th and 19th centuries and are rightly called as Trinity, because of their great contribution to the field. Their main contribution has been to the musical forms, raga-s and tala-s, thus giving a concrete structure to the Karnataka Music system. Their music tradition has been preserved today and descended through their disciples and documented in manuscripts and books. Two-day National Seminar The Department is organizing a two-day National Seminar on the Contribution of Trinity to Karnataka Music. This Seminar would be highly significant, since, Thiruvarur is the birth place of the Trinity and 2017- 18 marks the completion of 250 years of the birth of the great Saint poet and one among the Trinity namely, Sri Tyagaraja. Further this would be first National Seminar on Music being organised by the Department of Music and Fine arts of the Central University of Tamil Nadu. The Seminar on music would primarily consist of Research Paper presentations by Faculty members and Scholars. The main objective of the Seminar is to bring out the musical aspects in the compositions of Trinity, in order to understand their contribution to the development of Karnataka Music. Themes for Research Papers The Seminar is devoted to the Contribution of Music Trinity; the main focus would be on the musical contribution of one among the trinity or the three composers together. Research papers can be supplemented with music demonstrations, live and recorded. The sub-themes of the papers are: Contribution of Trinity to Karnataka Music Treatment of different kinds of raga-s by each of them Tala-s figuring in the compositions of Trinity Types of compositions / Musical Forms composed by Trinity Organization and Structure of Musical Forms (Krti / Kirtana / Svarajati / Ragamalika etc.) of Trinity Melodic and Rhythmic organisation of Trinity’s compositions Appreciation of any one composition of Trinity Group Krti-s of Trinity Pathantara-s in the Compositions of Trinity Comparative analysis of the Compositions of Trinity Sources for the Compositions of Trinity Influence of Trinity on the Composers of 20th century Impact of early composers on Trinity Trinity Compositions in Bhajana tradition and Harikatha Kalakshepa Trinity Compositions in Bharatanatya and other dance forms And any other topic related to the main theme It is hereby specified that papers on the biographical details and emphasizing on sahitya component alone, could be avoided. On the other hand, musical input is appreciated. Abstracts & Research paper Submission Abstracts not exceeding 200 words, with the Author’s name, address, contact mobile number, email id and a brief profile not exceeding 50 words, should be sent on or before 31st December 2017. In case of repetition of topics, the participants will be intimated for change or alteration of topics. The received abstracts will be reviewed and suggestions if any, will be informed through email, immediately. Full length papers (not exceeding 2000 words) are to be sent latest by 31st January 2018. Participants can make a Power Point presentation of their papers. Research papers can be presented in English / Tamil / Telugu / Kannada / Malayalam. But an English translation is requested to be submitted for the sake of readers who do not know the regional language and as the BOOK printed will be in English, to reach globally. Abstracts & Full Length Papers are to be sent to: [email protected] All research papers will be published as the Proceedings of the National Seminar in the Digital form - an eBook with ISBN registration Music Performance There will be a group music performance by the participants, as a mark of respect to the Trinity by rendering a few famous compositions of them in the evening of the first day of the Seminar (February 5th 2018). The below mentioned musical compositions will be rendered in unison, on Voice, Veena, Violin, Flute, Mridangam, Ghatam, Kanjira and Morsing. (Playing of any other classical music instrument is welcome). Instrumentalists are requested to arrange for their instruments. 1. Sri Ganapatini – Saurashtra – Adi- Tyagaraja 2. Guruleka etuvanti – Gauri Manohari – Khanda Capu - Tyagaraja 3. Kamakshi (Svarajati) – Bhairavi – Misra Capu – Syama Sastri 4. Kamalambam Bhajare – Kalyani – Adi – Muttuswamy Dikshita 5. Endaro Mahanubhavulu – Sri ragam – Adi- Tyagaraja 6. Gitarthamu – Surutti – Adi - Tyagaraja 7. Ni nama rupa – (Pavamana) – Mangalam – Saurashtra – adi- Tyagaraja (list is tentative; changes if any will be informed thorugh email) Visit to Birth places of Trinity and Tiruvarur temple In the evening of the second day (February 6th 2018), the participants will be taken on a short trip to the birth memorial places of Syama Sastri, Tyagaraja and Muttuswamy Dikshita, situated around the temple. This will be followed by the visit to Lord Tyagaraja swamy – Goddess Kamalamba temple, popularly called Arooraan (Thiruvarur) temple. After this, it becomes easier to depart by train or bus to their destinations. Accommodation Accommodation will be provided to faculty and Musicians on priority, at the University Guest House, CUTN The rooms will be allotted on twin – sharing basis (two persons in a room) Accommodation for students and research scholars will be arranged in the University Hostel or Guest House, on sharing basis. Those who wanted to stay in Hotels, can make their own arrangement Accommodation is strictly meant only for registered delegates Accommodation is available only from 6 p.m. of 4th February to the evening of 6th February 2018. Accommodation will not be entertained for friends, visitors or others who are not participants.
