Rugby World Cup – Parnell’s All Blacks

Many of our Parnell cricketers also had outstanding rugby careers. Here are some of those who represented and the All Blacks: the Beginning – For NZ - Pre All Blacks

Thomas (Darby) Ryan

Thomas Ryan Jack Arneil

Thomas “Darby” Ryan 1864 – 1927, NZ Rugby Rep. and President of Parnell Cricket Club 1884-86 Our first record President (there will have been earlier ones but we have no records) ‘Darby’ Ryan represented the Grafton & Parnell Rugby Clubs. Also Auckland (9 games 1882-88) and New Zealand at rugby. In 1884 toured NSW with the first

ever NZ Rugby Rep. team – played in all 8 games on the wing & was joint top points scorer. In a pre tour game vs. , Ryan had had the distinction of being the first person to score points for a NZ team when he drop kicked a goal 10 minutes after the start. For Auckland he played 5 matches vs. NSW & 1 vs. Gt Britain. He was Auckland’s captain in 1886. Ryan was a distinguished artist – he travelled with Charles Goldie and shared a studio with him. Later, Ryan ran tourist launches on Lakes Rotorua and Taupo. Ryan did not perform any notable deeds on the cricket field but was only 20 years old when elected President of PCC in 1884. The Club had earlier Presidents but we have no record of their names.

Jack Arneil He was notable cricketer of the 1880/90s, Arneil played just a few games for Parnell. He was also a renowned rugby player being elected a Life Member of the Auckland RU in 1896.

Craig Culpan (Canada), Murray Williams (Bay of Plenty & ), Isa Nacewa (Fiji), Chris Noakes (Otago and Bay of Plenty).

Charlie Garrard played cricket and rugby for Canterbury and was a first class umpire. In first class cricket, Jack Burton represented Ceylon and Wellington, and Bob Lusk represented Taranaki (then first class).

Represented Auckland at both Rugby and Cricket: Jack Arneil, Dick Crowe (in 18), Carlton Hay, Ted Mills, Ike Mills, Herb Simpson, Bob Sorenson, Charlie Stone, and Brian Warner.

Grant Fox is the son in law of Merv Wallace/ brother in law of Greg – Grant, a very useful cricketer, was “roped in” for just 1 game of cricket for Parnell.

Life Members of Auckland Rugby: Dixon, G.H. 1896 Arneil, J. 1896 Murray, F.S. 1896 Ohlson, F.J. 1920

Parnell CC Senior XI 1899/1900

FJ (Fred) Ohlson & IJ (Ike) Mills

B/r J Gavin, HB Lusk, EH Seagar, J Young, C Restieaux M/r WJ Dinnison, WH Lawson, R Woods, FJ Ohlson, IJ Mills, R Cromwell F/r A Richards

Fred Ohlson: a noted administrator, was elected a Life Member of the Auckland as well as being a Life Member of Parnell CC. Fred represented, and captained, Auckland at cricket. Ike Mills: played 13 rugby games for Auckland. Ike was the Province’s best batsman & he also represented NZ at cricket. One of 4 cricketing brothers, George Mills was ’s groundsman for many years.

Parnell CC Senior XI 1921/2 – First All Blacks Ces & Vic Badeley

Brothers Ces and Vic Badeley

Back: WJ Dinnison (Manager), WS Spence, E McLeod, T Milliken, Middle: W Turbott, A Anthony, RC Somervell (C), R Dow, MJ Moore Back: CEO Badeley, VIR Badeley

Ces & Vic Badeley: were both All Blacks. Ces was selected captain of the 1924/5 Team to UK but was replaced by Cliff Porter before the team left NZ. Ces, a 1st five eight, played in NZ’s first Test vs. the Springboks (, 1921). The 2nd Test vs. the ‘Boks was the first ever at Eden Park & again Ces played inside Mark Nicholls (see below). Vic Badeley played 5 games for the ABs but no tests. Also: Eddie McLeod: represented NZ at hockey as well as cricket & Tony Anthony was regarded as the unluckiest player never to have played cricket for NZ. WS (Stan) Spence: was Matt McMillin’s Grandfather (ie Margie’s Dad). Matt was Club Chairman in 2003/4 and also did two stints as Club Captain. His father, Graham, played for Parnell and his grandfather, Colin McMillin, was your Editor’s coach back in the 1950s.

Parnell CC Senior XI 1922/3 – Champions Mark Nicholls, Vic Badeley & Toby Sheen

MF (Mark) Nicholls VIR (Vic) Badeley TR (Toby) Sheen

Back: W Upton (Scorer), MJ Moore, E McLeod, MF Nicholls, JH Mann, DR Macdonald Middle: WJ Dinnison (Manager), LG Hemus, A Anthony, RC Somervell, JM Smith, RB Lusk (Chair.) Front: TR Sheen, V Badeley, EH Scott-Clarke

Mark Nicholls: Originally from Wellington, Nicholls played cricket for Parnell only this one season before returning south. Mark toured UK with the 1924/5 “Invincibles” which won all its 31 games. Only thwarted a “” by refusing to play the ABs due to an argument over expenses. Playing his first test for the ABs at the age of 20, Mark eventually played 51 games for them including 10 Tests. “Men in Black” says of him – “Probably the greatest five-eighth ever to wear the All Black jersey, Nicholls was also an outstanding goal-kicker,”

Bob Lusk: Chairman of the Committee here, Bob Lusk played rugby 11 times for Auckland between 1886 & ’89. Eden Park Board member – see below.

Parnell CC Senior XI 1933/4 – Champions Viv Wilson

VW (Viv) Wilson

B/r WJ Dinnison, AW McCoy, F Goodsir, O Cleal, Jw Schollum, VW Wilson F/r SC Hay, RW Stehr, A Anthony, PE Whitelaw, HG Vivian, D Hawke, WM Wallace

Viv Wilson: played rugby for College Rifles &, as an All Black, toured Australia in 1920 playing 7 games. No Tests were played on that tour. Viv Wilson, along with Parnell team mates Stuart Hay & Giff Vivian, became a stalwart of the Auckland Golf Club. Viv was the sole handicapper for many years. No computer, just his discretion, & youngsters like your Editor (c. 1960) quite often found that their handicap had been chopped just before an important match! No hard feelings but young upstarts had to learn the hard way. Viv Wilson, Stuart Hay & Giff Vivian were all left handers & played golf regularly together at Middlemore for many years.

Stuart Hay: Chairman of the Eden Park Trust Board for many years – see separate section below.

Parnell CC Senior XI 1951-2 Mick Bremner & Jack Skeen

SG (Mick) Bremner JR (Jack) Skeen

B/r PR Bull, TW Aitken, BJ Sorenson, DJ Hemi, SG Bremner RG Fowler F/r AG Putt, PC Elliott, GO Rabone, WM Wallace, FE Hemmingson Absent: JR Skeen

Mick Bremner: a steady first five-eight who played 18 games for the ABs including 2 Tests. He suffered from having competition from Ross Brown & Pat Walsh for the no. 6 jersey ie no. 10 these days – numbers were reversed then – Don Clarke, at full back, wore no. 1 and the hooker 15.

Jack Skeen: a flanker who played just the one Test, the 2nd , vs the 1952 Wallabies. He represented Auckland at rugby from 1951 to 1957. As a cricketer, Jack Skeen was a very effective opening bowler for Parnell.

Other rugby players from that team:

PR (Peter) Bull DJ (Doug) Hemi with SG (Mick) Bremner at our Jubilee in 1984

Peter Bull: represented Auckland at rugby in 7 matches. A batsman who, later, played for Cornwell in that club’s early years.

Doug Hemi: played rugby but remained in the shadow of his brother Ron – All Black hooker right through that massive 1956 series vs. South Africa. It was Ron who threw the pass to Peter Jones & the rest is history ……….. ! Ron also played cricket for Auckland in the 1950/1 season, a member of YMCA CC. Doug, a school teacher, moved to Hamilton in the mid ‘50s but always kept in touch with Parnell.

Jack Skeen: a flanker who played just the one Test, the 2nd , vs the 1952 Wallabies. He represented Auckland at rugby from 1951 to 1957. As a cricketer, Jack Skeen was a very effective opening bowler for Parnell.

An All Black from our Junior Ranks:

EDCA 1971/2 – U14 Winners District Tournament – Nicky Allen

B/r Mrs P Edwards, N Flynn, P Edwards, N Allen, P Alison, P Carew, J Molesworth F/r D Burton, P Driscoll, N Yates, M Richards, D Sergant, T Hellaby, D Wotherspoon

Nicky Allen: a PCC & AGS lad, good authorities still speak of him as “good as ” – high praise for the skills he displayed in his very short career. Per Stephen Townshend in the “Roar” – “All class and composure, Allen ably directed the team around the field. If he wasn’t running beautiful lines, he was passing sweetly, tackling solidly, even bobbing up for a try (though there was a suspicion he dropped the ball as he was forcing it over the line).Phwoar! What a performance!”.

Just 7 games for Auckland, 9 for the ABs including 2 Tests. He stayed on in Wales after the AB tour, then headed for Australia & died tragically of head injuries after a rugby match in Wollangong in Oct. 1984 at the age of 26.

For Canada - Craig Culpan Parnell Juniors - U14s 1994/95 –

Parnell CC – U14 Winners EDCA Senior A Division. Craig Culpan B/r C Culpan, J Culpan (Coach), C Clark F/r C Horner, C Thomas, S Gallaugher, M Johnston, D Minhinnick

Craig Culpan: an excellent bat for Parnell, Craig played at centre for Canada (“The Lumberjacks”) vs. the All Blacks at , Hamilton on 16 June 2007. ABs won 64-13 with Dan Carter scoring 29 points. Craig didn’t score for Canada.

For Fiji & Japan U15s – 1st Grade Maroon 1996/97 – Isa Nacewa & Murray Williams

Isa Nacewa - Fiji Murray Williams - Canada

U15 Maroon – one of 6 PCC U15 teams in ‘96/97

A strong year for Parnell U15 cricketers – 5 full season teams & a half season side. The Maroons contained 3 who went on to be notable rugby players – Craig Culpan (as above), Isa Nacewa, the utility back who represented Fiji as a youngster & so disqualified himself from AB honours though he showed fine form for both Auckland & the & Murray Williams. The latter, the son of Kevin Williams – Ellerslie CCs former coach - represented Bay of Plenty at rugby & was Japan’s no. 10 at the 2011 !

Other U15s from that year to follow rugby rather than cricket were Mike and Dave Bygrave, Cameron Jowett & Chris Noakes. Cam Rope is still involved with both sports, working for both College Rifles and Ellerslie CC. And Chris Horner dabbles (sort of!).

Under 17s – 1st Grade 1996/97 -

U17 First Grade ‘96/97 – Ali Williams’ 120 vs. Waitakere was the stand out performance

Ali’s younger brother, Jonathan (”Jay”), was also a rugby player who turned out for Auckland. Ali’s performances need no further comment.

Administrators – Eden Park Trust Board

Fred Earl, KC RB (Bob) Lusk SC (Stuart) Hay

Parnell CC members have had significant roles with the Trust Board from the very outset. Fred Earl and Bob Lusk were two of the original first Trustees. They watched over the interests of both cricket & rugby over many years. Later Stuart Hay, a Parnell left handed batsman through the 1930s, was Chairman of the Eden Park Trust Board from 1963 to 1985.
