In summary, the application is contrary to the Council’s development plan and there are no material considerations that would reasonably support any decision to approve. It is clear from the information submitted with the application that the proposed dwelling would be constructed as a ‘new build’ development, rather than through conversion as suggested by the applicant’s agent. Thus, the proposal relates to the redevelopment of a brownfield site within the green belt which is not supported by the Council’s development plan. Also attached is the recommended schedule of conditions in the event that the Local Review Body upholds the Review. The new fibre cabinet at the Killearn exchange is now live, accepting orders, and some residents have already got the service installed and working. Speeds are reported to be as expected at 30Mbps or more. So if you live in “The Trees”, nearby, or in the centre of the village, you should be able to get “super-fast broadband! About 50% of postcodes in the village are now connected to one of the fibre cabinets. Status of your individual connectivity can be checked on either of the WhereandWhen pages of the BT Openreach or Digital Scotland websites or in the tables at the end of this report. This site is also showing a download of the exchange roll-out list, but as this is only at exchange level, it doesn’t help very much. NOTE: Remember the Digital Scotland “Better Broadband Scheme” provides a subsidy to establish a better connection using either satellite or wireless for those currently getting download speeds of less than 2Mbps. See the KCC website for specific links. Balfron has also got more cabinets with 85% of the village now showing as “Accepting Orders”. Strathblane/Blanefield is in a similar position with slightly over 85% of the village covered. Buchlyvie has nearly 90% showing as connected while Croftamie/Drymen is showing nearly 60% Accepting Orders. All this does have to be qualified though as many premises are on long lines, and whilst they will see a significant benefit in speed (double or better), they will not achieve “super-fast” speeds.

    Your site at Carbeth is 60’ by 60’. The main hut area should be no more than 250sq ft. Smaller extensions that do not dominate the main structure can be added in time, but the hut must not occupy more than one-third of the site area, and it must be at least 2 metres back from site boundaries. Guidelines allow that hut designs show originality and diversity of appearance, and they stipulate that recycled and environmentally friendly materials should be used wherever possible. As a boy in Rushden I walked to school, to visit relatives, to Boys Brigade meetings and to the Methodist Church. You walked or cycled. In Cambridge it was often easier to walk than cycle. When I was at home during vacations with Anne living in Irchester, 3 miles away, I often walked back late at night cursing an early last bus. When our boys were young we went to the nearby National Trust properties at Styal or Lyme Park to play and walk. One standout memory is coming down from the Bowstones at Lyme Park with Richard, aged 2, showing signs of hypothermia. And my interest in fungi started during these walks as the boys were ace at spotting them. We still walk most days for 2 or 3 miles although often with a stop for coffee along the way. We know, and can rate, every coffee shop in the area. So it is no surprise that I have some long-distance walks to write about. The first, and longest, was the Pennine Way done as a single walk over 14 days in 1975. It was the first official long distance route created in the UK. Now they criss-cross the country. You are as likely to see a fingerpost saying something like Hatters Way as simply Public Footpath. My next experience – the northern section of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path – differed in almost every way.

This idea, of course, had become well established by the ‘camping and trekking’ phenomenon that took place nationwide in the 1920s and 1930s. Carbeth’s population expanded in relation to this need. Numbers peaked in 1941 as a direct result of enemy action when the nearby town of Clydebank was devastated in an air raid. The Huts filled with evacuees and homeless families.
