Five of the documents are reports from conferences on mathematics, science and technology education. Participants in these conferences included scientists, mathematicians and engineers, elemen­ tary and secondary school teachers and administrators, representatives of professional societies, foundations, private industry and business. Some papers report the results of surveys and assessments of ad hoc committee activities. The first four presentations address the teaching and learning of mathema­ tics, science and technology in grades K-12. Issues of appropriate content and process are discussed. Suggestions for changing some of the content of tradi­ tional elementary and secondary education are presented and arguments for the need for all students to study mathematics, science and technology every year during their elementary and secondary education are made. Emerging new technologies hold promise for more effective education. Though this is addressed in the papers related to subject matter learning and teaching, the topic is sufficiently important to merit a separate presentation on the uses of technology as a tool in education rather than learning about technology. The new technologies have also allowed new research methods in the areas of cognition and behavior. Some of the findings of this research relevant to precollege mathematics, science and technology education are presented in this volume. The NSB Commission has seen some excel >entprograms throughout the country. New initiatives for improving elementary and secondary education, which have been undertaken by states, are described herein as well as model programs and some methods designed to motivate minority and female students to pursue careers in scientific, mathematical and technological fields. And some possibilities for business and industry to become involved in the improvement of elementary and secondary education are described. The views and opinions expressed in this Volume do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSB Commission, the National Science Board or the National Science Foundation Nevertheless, in the opimon of the NSB Commission, the contributions provide a useful range of perspectives on ways to improve and continually ensure a sound and effective education in mathematics, science and technology for the youth of our Nation. Cutting ∗ Department of Psychology, Uris Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-7601, USA Received 25 April 2014; accepted 20 July 2014 Abstract I investigated the number and locations of characters as they appear on the screen in 48 popular movies released from 1935 to 2010. Sampling an average of one of every 500 frames (∼20 s of film) I amassed data from almost 14 000 movie images. The number and placement of the characters in each image were digitally recorded and compared across years and across aspect ratios (the ratio of the width to the height of the image). Results show a roughly linear decrease in the number of characters on the screen across years. Moreover, the number of characters influences shot scale, shot duration, and mediates their direct effect on one another. The location of characters on the screen was measured by the bridge of the nose between the eyes. By this measure I found that framing varies widely across aspect ratios, but when each image is conformed to the same shape, the overlap of the locations of characters is remarkably constant across years and aspect ratios for images with one, two, and three characters. Anderson In 1972, a new form of entertainment became commercially available with the release of the video game Pong. In Pong, two players tried to “hit” an electronic “ball” back and forth. From these humble beginnings, a revolution in the entertainment industry was born. Interactive game revenues are now significantly greater than the domestic film industry (“Industrial Strengths,” 2000). Worldwide video games sales are now at $20 billion annually (Cohen, 2000). The PlayStation video game console, which began as a side project at Sony, now represents $6 billion of the company’s $20 billion in annual sales (Cohen, 2000). It is reasonable to question whether video games may have similar effects to the effects of other entertainment media. In this chapter the term video game will be used to describe games played on video game consoles (e.g., PlayStation), on computers, or on hand-held video game devices (e.g., GameBoy). TIME SPENT WITH VIDEO GAMES Video games have become one of the dominant entertainment media for children in a very short time. In the mid-1980s, children averaged about four hours a week playing video games, including time spent playing at home and in arcades (Harris & Williams, 1985). By the early 1990s, home video game use had increased and arcade play had decreased. The average amount was still fairly low, averaging about two hours of home play per week for girls, and about four hours of home play per week for boys (Funk, 1993).

Nelson, Christian Brothers University (2002 Instructional Resource Award Recipient) Overview This 106-page resource offers instructors tools for using films to enhance their instruction. Student evaluations consistently indicate that films help them learn the topics, provide an alternative to traditional lectures, and give them a different point of view. However, students also say they do not like to view films if they do not understand the relevancy of the film to the course material. This resource gives teachers of psychology additional tools for using film, such as tested study guides, sample syllabi, student papers, references, and Internet resources. The film study guides contained in this resource have been used in a variety of psychology classes, and may be applicable to a variety of other courses. The previous year had seen the Seagram buyout of MCA-Universal, Time Warner’s purchase of the massive Turner Broadcasting System, and the launch of Dream- Works, the first new movie studio since the classical era. Then on August 1 came the bombshell that provoked Gabler’s editorial. Disney announced the acquisition of ABC and its parent conglomerate, Cap Cities, in a $19 billion deal – the second- largest merger in US history, which created the world’s largest media company. Disney CEO Michael Eisner also disclosed a quarter-billion-dollar deal with Mike Ovitz of Hollywood’s top talent agency, Creative Artists, to leave CAA and run the Disney empire. For Gabler, the Disney deals confirmed “a fundamental shift in the balance of power in Hollywood – really the third revolution in the relationship between industry forces.” Revolution I occurred nearly a century before with the formation of the Hollywood studios and the creation of a “system” that enabled them to con- trol the movie industry from the 1920s through the 1940s. Revolution II came with the postwar rise of television and the dismantling of the studio system by the courts, which allowed a new breed of talent brokers, “most notably Lew Wasserman of the Music Corporation of America [MCA],” to usurp control of the film industry.

    21 st Century Technologies Promises and Perils of a Dynamic Future ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION ORGANISATION 21st CENTURY TECHNOLOGIES PROMISES AND PERILS OF A DYNAMIC FUTURE ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT Pursuant to Article 1 of the Convention signed in Paris on 14th December 1960, and which came into force on 30th September 1961, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shall promote policies designed: ± to achieve the highest sustainable economic growth and employment and a rising standard of living in Member countries, while maintaining ®nancial stability, and thus to contribute to the development of the world economy; ± to contribute to sound economic expansion in Member as well as non-member countries in the process of economic development; and ± to contribute to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral, non-discriminatory basis in accordance with international obligations. The original Member countries of the OECD are Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. The following countries became Members subsequently through accession at the dates indicated hereafter: Japan (28th April 1964), Finland (28th January 1969), Australia (7th June 1971), New Zealand (29th May 1973), Mexico (18th May 1994), the Czech Republic (21st December 1995), Hungary (7th May 1996), Poland (22nd November 1996) and Korea (12th December 1996). The Commission of the European Communities takes part in the work of the OECD (Article 13 of the OECD Convention).
