What Is So Rare?
WHAT IS SO RARE? As a Fieldfare in April? In Massachusetts, perhaps only a Western Reef Heron or a White-faced Ibis. April here is a month of avian surprises. The 1986 birdwatching spring was off to a happy start with the discovery by schoolteacher Ralph Richards, during a lonely vigil on the cold and rainy Sunday of April 6, of a Fieldfare Turdus pilaris) in a Concord cornfield near the Sudbury River. According ta a bulletin promptly issued by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, this is a first state record, and there have been, s-ince 1878, ten prior records in North America, the most recent being the occurrence of four Fieldfares in St. John's, Newfoundland, from December 1985 to mid-January 1986. "It seems not unlikely that the Massachusetts bird originated with the same midwinter flight that brought the Newfoundland birds to North America. ..." In winter, the Fieldfare ranges from southern Scandinavia, the British Isles, and central Europe south to the Mediterranean. Outside of the breeding season, the bird's habitat choice is open fields and pastures, where it occurs gregariously in large flocks, often accompanied by Redwings (Turdus iliacus). The Fieldfare nests in northern Scandinavia (it is Norway's most common thrush), in north and central continental Europe east to Siberia, and also in Iceland and southern Greenland. The story of the establishment of the disjunct Greenland population is well documented. In January 1937, a strong southeast gale swept a flock of Fieldfares across Europe and the Atlantic to the island of Jan Mayen and the Greenland coast. -

Ten taxa were recorded, and their taxonomic positions are shown in a table. Key words: ticks, mites, birds, Wild Animal Medical Center, Japan Epidemiological surveys are an essential conservation tool for fully understanding infectious diseases. In 2004, we began an investigation of avian parasitic diseases at the Wild Animal Medical Center of the Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine of Rakuno Gakuen University, Japan (Asakawa 2010; Asakawa et al. 2002, 2013; Hirayama et al. 2013). This paper summarizes the findings of seven publications on avian ticks and parasitic mites (Nakamura et al. 2003; Uemura et al. 2010; Yoshino et al. 2003, 2009a, b, 2011, 2013). During submission of a publication for the proceedings of the 14th International Congress of Acarology, Kyoto, taxonomical inconsistencies, including invalid names or synonyms for mite species, were reported to us. -

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Yasouj University, Yasouj, Iran (Received: 10 May 2019; Accepted: 9 October 2019) In this study, the nest-cavity characteristics of Middle Spotted and Syrian Woodpeckers as well as tree characteristics (i.e. tree diameter at breast height and hole measurements) chosen by each species were analyzed. Our results show that vertical entrance diameter, chamber vertical depth, chamber horizontal depth, area of entrance and cavity volume were significantly different between Syrian Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker (P < 0.05). The average tree diameter at breast height and nest height between the two species was not significantly different (P > 0.05). For both species, the tree diameter at breast height and nest height did not significantly correlate. The directions of nests’ entrances were different in the two species, not showing a preferentially selected direction. These two species chose different habitats with different tree coverings, which can reduce the competition between the two species over selecting a tree for hole excavation. BIRD WATCHING IN CYPRUS A BRIEF GUIDE FOR VISITORS TO THE ISLAND 1 Information on Cyprus in general The position of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean with Turkey to the north, Syria to the east and Egypt to the south, places it on one of the major migration routes in the Mediterranean and makes it a stop off point for many species which pass each year from Europe/Asia to Africa via the Nile Delta. The birds that occur regularly on passage form a large percentage of the ‘Cyprus list’ that currently totals nearly 380 species. Of these only around 50 are resident and around 40 are migrant species that regularly or occasionally breed. The number of birds passing over during the spring and autumn migration periods are impressive, as literally millions of birds pour through Cyprus. Spring migration gets underway in earnest around the middle of March, usually depending on how settled the weather is, and continues into May. A few early arrivals can even be noted in February, especially the swallows, martins and swifts, some wheatears and the Great Spotted Cuckoo Clamator glandarius. Slender-billed Gulls Larus genei and herons can be seen in flocks along the coastline. Each week seems to provide a different species to watch for. The end of March sees Roller Coracias garrulous, Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus, Cretzschmar’s Bunting Emberiza caesia, Black-headed Wagtails Motacilla flava feldegg and Red-rumped Swallows Cecropsis daurica, while on the wetlands Marsh Sandpipers Tringa stagnatilis, Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola, Spur-winged Vanellus spinosus and Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii can be seen. -

Box 844, Ames, Iowa 50010, 1 Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108, and 4 Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, Okeechobee, Florida 34974 ABSTRACT: Thirty fulvous whistling-ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor) collected during 1984-1985 from the Ever- glades Agricultural Area of southern Florida were examined for parasites. Twenty-eight species were identified and included 8 trematodes, 6 cestodes, 1 nematode, 4 chewing lice, and 9 mites. All parasites except the 4 species of lice and 1 of the mites are new host records for fulvous whistling-ducks. None of the ducks were infected with blood parasites. Every duck was infected with at least 2 species of helminths (mean 4.2; range 2- 8 species). The most common helminths were the trematodes Echinostoma trivolvis and Typhlocoelum cucu- merinum and 2 undescribed cestodes of the genus Diorchis, which occurred in prevalences of 67, 63, 50, and 50%, respectively. Only 1 duck was free of parasitic arthropods; each of the other 29 ducks was infested with at least 3 species of arthropods (mean 5.3; range 3-9 species). The most common arthropods included an undescribed feather mite (Ingrassia sp.) and the chewing louse Holomenopon leucoxanthum, both of which occurred in 97% of the ducks. -

Here we present the migration tracks and wintering locations of the first 15 six Cyprus Wheatears to be tracked with geolocators: a species with high survival and a stable 16 population. We therefore predicted a non-stop flight from Cyprus to sub-Saharan wintering grounds, a 17 single wintering area for each individual and a wide spread of wintering locations representing low 18 migratory connectivity at the population level. The sub-Saharan wintering grounds in South Sudan, Sudan 19 and Ethiopia were likely reached by a single flight of an average straight-line distance of 2,538 km in ca. 20 60 hours, with an average minimum speed of 43.1 km/h. The high speed of migration probably ruled out 21 stop-overs greater than a few hours. Cyprus Wheatears migrated from Cyprus in mid-late October and 22 most probably remained at a single location throughout winter; three out of five birds with available data 23 may have used a second site <100 km away during February; all returned between the 7 – 22nd March 24 when accurate geolocation data are not possible due to the equinox. -

Tanzania, 30 November to 21 December 2020 Thomas Pettersson This tour was organized by Tanzania Birding and Beyond Safaris and unfortunately, I was the only participant as my friend was prevented from going as was planned. The flights from Stockholm via Addis Ababa to Dar es Salaam and back with Ethiopian Airlines were uneventful. The only differences from my previous flights were that wearing face masks on the aircrafts was mandatory, and recommended at the airports, and that they checked my body temperature at both arrival and departure. I am not sure what the consequences would have been in case of fever. You must also complete a health declaration both for transfer and arrival. The outbound flight from Stockholm to Addis Ababa was about half empty and on the return perhaps only 25 % of the seats were occupied, which meant good nights sleep on three seats both ways. The flights between Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam were fully booked both ways. The domestic flights with Coastal Aviation from Dar es Salaam via Zanzibar (Unguja) to Pemba and on to Tanga were also smooth, with the same regulations as above. The aircrafts were painfully small though, 12 seats. Not much space for legs and hand luggage. On the other hand, the distances are short. All in all, the tour was a big success. Accommodation was generally good, although basic at some places, but nothing to complain about. Food was excellent and plentiful, and I had no issues with the stomach. The drivers and the guides were excellent, in particular the outstanding Anthony, who guided most of the tour.
