It was a pleasure to have the Class of 1968, who graduated 50 years before, lead in the Class of 2018. At this year’s graduation ceremony, CLASS OF 1968 we were able to pass along our thanks to this class and ensure them that many of the traditions they started 50 years ago are still alive and well at Alter. ’68 alum and Distinguished Hall of Fame member, Larry Connor, addressed our students from the class of 2018. They are sure to carry many of those learning with them as they progress through life.

We had one member from our Class of ’68 (Margaret Dintaman Gantt), who is the grandmother of one of the 2018 graduates, Connor Gantt. We were so happy to have Margaret not only lead in the procession with the other ’68 grads, but she was also able to present Connor’s diploma to him during the graduation ceremony. What a special moment!

As the class of 1968 gathered for this graduation ceremony, it certainly stirred the excitement for the they had been planning. In just a few short months, they would be celebrating at their own 50th high school reunion.

Alumnus, Jim Thunder ‘68 has always been very passionate about and interested in the history of the Catholic Church. In doing research on the Catholic Church’s efforts on human rights in China, Jim discovered that Father Gilligan, the very priest who Father Martin T. Gilligan he knew to be the founding Pastor of St. Charles Parish, was the same priest who had an enormous impact on the human rights issue in China! Jim wrote an extensive piece on Father Gilligan titled: “Martin T. Gilligan: An American Hero Neglected - Until Today”, which was published by Spero Forum. To read the full article about Father Gilligan and his impact, please see the published piece at www.alterhs.org/fathergilligan.

10 the ROUNDTABLE Guatemala mission trip Despite a long trip and reports of a volcano erruption, Alter students and faculty managed a wonderful mission trip to the Agua Viva Orphanage safely! Here are few notes from Ms. Fulk, who was on the trip.

Thank you so much for your prayers! We arrived home safely this morning.

We arrived in Guatemala on Sunday shortly after Volcan de Fuego erupted. We got out of the airport right before it closed down and had no idea anything had happened. By the time we knew what was going on, we were safe in the car.

Once we arrived at Agua Viva, we were very safe. We did have a lot of ash and debris around the property, but there was another dormant volcano separating us from Fuego, so we were never in direct danger. FALL 2018 11 ALTER LIFE Steubenville Youth Conference

For the fourth consecutive year, Ryan Mahle organized a trip to the Catholic Youth Conference in Steubenville, Ohio July 13 – 15th. Alter took 104 students with another ten students from other schools. The students spent their time listening to talks, attending mass, singing Christian songs, sharing their faith in small groups and experiencing the power of Eucharistic Adoration. Opportunities for Reconciliation were available all weekend as well. The 104 students represented close to 20% of the Alter student body who chose to spend one of their summer weekends deepening their faith. Almost 2,000 teens attended the conference at Franciscan University. Alter is grateful to Ryan Mahle who has put his energy and time into organizing the Steuenville Youth Conference for our community the past four years. As many of you already know, Ryan has taken a position with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and will not be returning to Alter. Ryan has been a passionate and enthusiastic witness of faith to the Alter community and inspired many students to embrace discipleship. His impact will live on in all of us who have been touched by his presence here.

KNIGHTS REMEMBERED

When we think about high school, what do we remember? Do we remember the classes, the friendships, the activities in which we participated, or was it a special teacher, a special moment, or a particular event that stands out? What was high school at Alter like for you? That answer is so different for each of us.

Many of you recall the good ole’ days - - the friendships formed, the spark of learning ignited on a particular subject, or the Spirit instilled in you during your time here. Others recall a time of growing up, awkward phases, and “figuring out who you were”, all while trying to focus on the school work, your extracurricular activities and the social pressures during your teenage years. Whatever the recollection, it’s always an interesting journey to think back and remember.

When a group in our Alter community reunites, there is an instant sense of tradition remembered, a feeling of belonging to something greater, and a unity understood. Regardless of how that reunion occurs, whether it be a formal class reunion or a casual spontaneous meeting under the big tent at Alter Fest, Knights remember one another. I had my 30th reunion this past Labor Day, and it was a true pleasure seeing faces I haven’t seen in that long and catching up with people I haven’t talked to for years. For me, one thing rang true, these people are KNIGHTS. Maybe time has made our hair a little greyer or our face a little more wrinkled, but I felt these people were more beautiful than ever.

I also had the pleasure to stop by many other reunions this year, as did our Principal, Lourdes Lambert, and our Advancement Director, Rick Willits. We all saw the love and excitement so many alums had for seeing their old friends and reconnecting with many they haven’t seen in years. They shared that brown and gold spirit and remembered each other and the memories with fondness and admiration. They told stories, laughed, and smiled a lot. They remembered. got email? Archdeacon: This state championship team from 1978 was ‘a bunch of cats who ... just refused to lose’

Dayton Daily News: Friday, August 31, 2018 By Tom Archdeacon - columnist

The butt kick comment backfired. It came just before the 1978 big school state championship game at St. John Arena between Alter High School and Akron Central-Hower, unbeaten in 24 games, ranked No. 1 in the state and filled with quick, high-flying dunkers.

“As we’re warming up, one of our balls rolls the other end of the court and Dan Bockhorn went to get it,” remembered Alter coach Alter players with the state championship trophy. “We just drove Petro batty,” laughed Pete Boyle, who lives in Dayton. “He just shook his head.”

BASKETBALL BOND STARTS EARLY

The basketball bond they formed started early, said back-up forward Rick Minor, who now owns a housing company in Texas: “It started in third grade. We’d be dribbling the ball in the snow, icicles hanging off the rim. It’s what we did. You’d go to a party and a basketball game would break out.

“We were a bunch of guys who went to St. Charles and joined the culture of the guys who’d come before us.”

“Back then there were no AAU teams so in the summertime you had to find competition. They started the trend of going out to Roosevelt to compete a couple nights a week. And Fairmont had the lighted courts and you’d go there seven nights a week and guys from other parts of the city would come out. It was wonderful.”

The Konicki Brothers sounds like it could be the title of a new fall . But a reality show about military service would be a better fit. We are proud to recognize the newest members of our Alter High School Alumni Hall of Fame. Each of these individuals has achieved success in their professional careers, personal life, or through their athletic endeavors, but all have modeled the Christian ideals that are the basis of an Alter education.

These eight new recipients were inducted into the Alter Hall of Fame on September 20, 2018 at a dinner downtown at The Steam CONNECTION Plant, a new local venue owned by John Riazzi ‘81 and operated by Lisa Britt ‘81 Beam. They each had inspirational talks that evening and then addressed our students at an assembly the following morning. They were also recognized during the Homecoming football game that evening.

David Homan Distinguished Alumnus Class of 1987 At Alter, Dave Homan was a part of everything the school had to offer: athletics, the arts, liturgical ministry, student council, clubs and community service. His high school experience was instrumental in laying the foundation for the rest of his life, and now, he’s giving back to Alter more than he could have received.

Saying Dave has had an impact on Alter High School is an understatement. In the mid 90’s, Inductees pictured L to R: David Homan, Karen Dempsey Volke, Dave Imber, Mike Fornes,Sam King, Jim “Spider” Dave joined other alumni to resurrect the Cunningham, Ed “Dart” Ramsey, Chad Larkin, Tracy Zobrist Glassmeyer, Dave Herbenick, and Mike Moser. marching band program, and in three years, the band was flourishing with over 70 members. Dave later returned to the Alter South Dayton Knights feeder football community as a coach and co-Director. The improvements made to the program were unreal, and Alter’s high school football program quickly pulled him into their organization as the team’s Communications Coordinator, Replay Coordinator, and Operations Director for camp. Dave also produces the Friday Knight Lights films, which are a highlight to our football and alumni communities. While Dave Mike Fornes’ acceptance speech Karen & Spider with 1970 alums Tracy and her high school friends continues in these roles today, he also joined the Alter Board of Trustees in 2014 and became the Board Chairman in 2018. Dave was also an instrumental leader, forward thinker, and project manager in the building of Alter’s new Arts Wing.

Dave is currently an owner and the Director of Strategy and Innovation for McGohan Brabender. While he has served on a number of national technology boards, he also gives his time to other non-profit organizations and has served on many of those boards as well. Dave lives in Dayton with his wife Amy and their four children: Sam, Imber addresses our students Ramsey rallies the students ‘92 & ‘93 Golf Team with Mrs. Lambert Maura, Max, and Ellie.
