Annual Report: Letter from John C. Brearley 2016

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter From John C. Brearley

I was trying to remember a quotation that might well summarize this past year. One variation, attributed to Andrew Carnegie, says that “anything in life worth having is worth working for.” Of course, he was right. Few things in the life of any person or organization have much meaning unless they require some effort to attain. Today I am grateful for the strong work of many faithful people who made 2016 a special year in the life of our church.

You will discover in the detailed reports that follow many highlights, but let me mention two that might be easily missed. The first is in the area of membership. In 2016 more than one hundred adults united with our fellowship. That is a significant number for a church our size, no doubt. But most of us can personally do more in this area. Let me invite you to invite your family and friends, your colleagues and neighbors, to join us in 2017. Growing churches offer personal invitations to potential new members. Our Deacons, as well as our Sponsors, are taking seriously the responsibility of helping these new persons find their place within our church. Welcoming them into our fellowship is the vital first step!

Secondly, and more obviously, we have successfully launched an engaging new worship service, The Gathering. Recently more than 200 members and guests gathered to enjoy this casual and contemporary worship offering. Currently meeting every other Sunday, this service is likely to become more frequent over time. First Presbyterian now has styles of worship (traditional, blended, and contemporary) that fit those who are looking to get to know us better. Please encourage them to attend any or all of the options we offer.

The other variation of the above quotation, credited to Jack London, says that “anything in life worth having is worth waiting for.” Certainly that seems to be the case when it comes to building the large expansion to the Grissom Campus. While we had hoped to begin construction this past fall, we started moving dirt as the new year began. The small delay was to wrestle with rising costs in materials, additional necessary site work, and a Hurricane named Matthew. All in all, we are most fortunate to now be under construction!

With the reality that our budget has shifted from 11.5 to 13.5 million dollars comes another reality. There is more work to be done. Over the next two years we will seek to increase our commitment to this cause. We will do so as we have before, believing that we have the resources necessary to complete this campaign. We will ask those who have not taken part to do so. We will ask those who have contributed to consider what more they might do. And, like always, we will simply try to be faithful stewards of all that we have been given. From the beginning we have trusted what Paul says with great confidence to the Philippians, that “the One who began a good work among you will bring it to completion.”(1:6) My friends, it will be that way to the end!

Thanks be to God…

Peace.

Abundant Life Ministry

Purpose: The goal of this ministry is to integrate the physical, spiritual, and social care of our FPC members with the love of the church. The pastoral care is provided by the Pastors, Deacons and Elders, Parish Nurse, Stephen Ministers, Lend -A-Hand volunteers, Visiting Volunteers, and each member of our church. All of these ministries will serve our members, that are in need of care. We encourage all of our members to inform the church of anyone ill, or in need of loving care from our church family.

The Parish Nurse coordinates events and educational seminars, promoting health and well being. Pastoral visits to those hospitalized, in assisted living, having bereavement issues, assessments for ability to live alone, mental illness, and referrals as needed, to the appropriate resource. Delivers ham and rolls, the Bereavement Box, along with the book, ”Healing After Loss”, for the newly bereaved. Often Deacons will assist, and coordinate the delivery of the items FPC offers. The nurse also screens support group referrals, before referring them to a group. The nurse serves as a Stephen Minister Leader, making referrals to Stephen Ministry.

Significant Events: The Super Senior Luncheon is a festive Christmas party for our elderly members (80 years old and above) that may be living in Assisted living, living at home , or may want to visit with other members of the church. The party is held early in the month of December. This year over 120 members and guests attended This event is meant to celebrate their many years of service to our church. The party includes Christmas Caroling, O Holy Night sung by Brown Bradley a delicious lunch, entertainment, Christmas songs by the Kindergarten (Growing Tree), favors, cards, and gifts. It also provides communion and a chance to meet all of the FPC staff. Our greeter for the last two years has been Mrs. Claus. This year Diane Von Stokes was dressed as Jingles the , she attended as a “greeter”. It is meant to show our love, for our “Super “members.

Seminars at FPC have included a broad range of topics: Anti-Inflammatory Diet, Raising self-esteem in children, hearing loss, upper and lower GI presentations, discipline suggestions, Grief workshop (6 weeks) Active Parenting Workshops (13 weeks ) for younger children, and teenagers. Other topics have been arthritis information, foot health, lectures on “Daring to Forgive”, “The Mature Mind”, and How to Prevent Bullying. An upcoming seminar will answer any questions about the need for daily vitamins. For the young parents we have a “fishbowl” of questions. This year we had a member talk about ways to age and stay strong. It was well attended and showed ways to improve balance and leg strength. We also had a Driver safety seminar, and Holiday Grief Seminar. We welcome any suggestions for a health seminar topic. The ministry encourages health and well being by having exercise classes i.e. Gentle Yoga, Exercise for the Unwilling and Ballroom Dancing. They are held at the church (Grissom Campus). All classes are twice a week. We have blood pressure screenings in February to celebrate National Heart Health Month held at both campuses.

Some of our support groups include:  Comfort Zoners for singles, or widowed men and women. They meet monthly at Southern House of Pancakes for lunch. Members may invite a guest, often have guest speakers/presenters to many of their meetings.  Grief Support Group, led by Harrison Gray, has bi-monthly meetings at our Grissom Campus. 8 Annual Report: Abundant Life 2016

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Abundant Life Ministry

Significant Events: (Groups) continued:  Adult Divorce Care Support Group, meets for 13 week sessions twice a year, fall and spring.  Children’s Divorce Care Support Group, meets in the spring as needed. Must have 5 children, age 9-12, that will attend.  Alzheimer’s support group for caregivers, meets bi-monthly at the Grissom Campus.  Lend-A Hand respite care, for caregivers. The Lend-A Hand volunteers also offer assigned visitation to the home bound, and to those in assisted living facilities. The male volunteers offer assistance for smoke alarm battery changing, and light bulb replacement. This ministry requires a brief orientation class, and strict confidentiality. Respite care enables the spouse to run errands or keep appointments. Our most recent service allows the family to attend church together, rather than staying with an ill member at home.  Prayer Shawl Ministry: Meets weekly (Wednesdays) to knit or crochet prayer shawls for those ill, or just need extra loving care. Baby Blankets are also given to each of our Newborns, along with a cross bookmark, and a book for the parents called “Children Learn What They Live.”

Focus for 2017:  I will continue to be conservative with church funds. We use church members as leaders of our groups and as resources for seminars.  Will continue to evaluate current programs, and our new ministries. Will continue to do needs assessment with our younger members, and parents, to determine their needs, and suggestions for seminars, and exercise programs.  Would like to have a budget for the prayer shawl ministry to purchase yarn. Many in the group are retired and on a fixed income. Some of our yarn is donated, however, many members buy their own yarn. (Currently getting some money donated to purchase yarn).  A small gift is given to our speakers, in appreciation of their time devoted to preparing and educating our members. Would like to continue this practice.  Would also like to purchase a small gift of food , postage stamps, ect., to take on a home visit. I often give Soup for the Soul, made by the Presbyterian Women, however it would be nice to also bring another small item, if they don’t want the soup.  In order to stay current for my RN licensure, I am required to take classes for continuing education that are certified by the nursing board. I would like tuition for the class, once a year, if the CE is nearby. I have taken an on-line course for 30 hours of CEU to save budget money. This is required for RN licensure in SC.  Our leaders for Divorce Care have asked for a person to be in the building while the groups are being held. Divorce is a tumultuous time for many, that may require someone available to call the police, if necessary.  I continue to need more blood pressure cuffs, as many of our older ones are broken.

Mission Ministry

Purpose: To inform and involve the members of the First Presbyterian Church in the global mission of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and to bring new disciples to Jesus Christ in our community, our state, nation, and world.

Current Leadership: John Neely (elder) Suzanne Belden Sue Cranford Ashley Gentry Cam Thomas (staff) Delaine Mann Cathy Oliver (elder) Caren Whittier (elder) Sarah Benton Amy Warner Robby Warner

FPC is engaged in mission both locally and globally; here’s how: Local Mission Front – A group of committed volunteers from this congregation prepare food and serve close to 100 guests of Street Reach Mission each Wednesday night all year long, 7800 meals over the course of a year! FPC is the only provider serving a meal every week of the year! We continue to collect a record number of coats and items of clothing, toys, and canned goods to benefit local helping agencies such as Helping Hand, Community Kitchen, Hope House of MB, Street Reach, Racepath Community Center, and New Directions of Horry County as well as providing workers for each of the agencies listed through volunteers from our church. We hope to be able to create a thrift store/clothing closet in the years to come to properly house the generous donations of clothing for men, women, and children, toys, and housewares.

Operation Christmas is a program co-sponsored by the mission and youth ministry teams. FPC provided for close to 200 children whose families would not have had Christmas gifts otherwise. This is the 6th year we have invited families to come and shop the FPC store for toys and clothing for their children. While the parents/ guardians shopped and wrapped, their children were entertained by volunteers along with students from the church with Christmas cookies, movies, and crafts. When the program was finished, the store was opened to those in need in the community and the remaining inventory of clothing, toys, and Bibles were given away. As well, we were blessed with the opportunity to take students from MBHS who are homeless or unaccompanied by their parents (parentless) shopping for clothes and other items at WalMart during the Christmas season. Leadership for Operation Christmas included: Suzanne Belden (Elder), Sarah Benton, Cam Thomas (staff), Helen Lazarus, Christina Lazarus, Ashley Gentry, Lauren Brearley, Kim Yingling, Mary Goodnight Thomas, Melanie Doty.

Beach Castles is a summer mission program inviting students from all over to come and serve in the Myrtle Beach area. Last year, FPC hosted some 100+ students over the course of the summer. Staying at the Kings campus, students completed home repair and simple construction projects in the Racepath/Myrtle Beach area to benefit those unable to complete the work themselves due to financial or physical limitations. Students who are old enough are given the opportunity to work on a Habitat site. This program has incredible potential as we move forward. Each Christmas Eve, FPC collects an offering to benefit Habitat for Humanity. As a result of this collection, we are working with HfH to build houses for those in need.

Beach Castles South is the name of our mission partnership with the Bahamas Youth Network under that leadership of Gabe, Jan, and Grace Swing on Long Island, Bahamas. The latter part of 2016 was spent planning, recruiting, and organizing missionaries to go to Long Island February 4 - 11, 2016. We give thanks for grants toward this effort awarded to us by the Chapin Foundation and the Presbytery of New Harmony.

This year, FPC has made strides to strengthen our budget to allow more additional mission efforts locally, domestically and internationally! With your help, that trend will continue in years to come. 19 Annual Report: Presbyterian Men 2016
