Fieldwork was concentrated in the area betweenBullhead Mountain on the east andPardonet Creek on the west (Fig.27). lhis areaincludes coal licences of Utah Mines Ltd.,Gulf Canada Resources Inc.., Shell Canada ResourcesLimited, andCinnabar Peak Mines Ltd.Recently published paperson the area includethose of Gibson(19781, St.ott and(Gibson (1980), andAnderson (1980). There are two coal-bearingformations in the area, theGething Formation of theBullhead Groupand theBickford Formation of thme Minnes ,:roup. The GethingFormation overlies the Bickford Formation and is sepsrated from it by the Cadomin Formation,which is variablypebbly sandstone to conglomerate (see stratigraphic column, Table 1). Regionallythe Cadomin Formation may rest on unitslower in the succession than the Bickford.According toStott (1973) this is due to an unconformitywhich progressivelytruncates underlying strata in a southwest-northeast direction. Descriptions were made from drilling samples and well cores and the strata were correlated with the aid of electrical logs. -

The palaeogeography of both areas during the Middle Jurassic shows that there were no elevated landmasses being eroded to produce conglomeratic material in the basins at that time. The low-lying landscape and connected shorelines may have provided connectivity between the two dinosaur populations. The dinosaur fauna of the Hebrides and Cleveland basins has been assessed based primarily on the abundant ichnites found in both areas as well as their skeletal remains. In the two basins, the dinosaur faunas are very similar, consisting of non-neosauropod eusauropods, a possible basal titanosauriform, large and small theropods and ornithopods and europodan thyreophorans. The main difference in the faunas is in the sizes. -

Geology and Coal Resources of the Carbon Creek- Mount Bickford Map-area. INTRODUCTION. The geological investigation of the Carbon Creek-Mount Eickford map-area was made with the purpose of obtaining information on the coal resources of the Carbon Creek basin and of the area between this coalfield and the Hasler Creekfield. Par- tieular attention was paid to the structure and distribution of coal-bearing rocks and to any exposures of coal of possible commercial significance. Much of the area between the Carbon Creek and Hasler Creek coalfields proved to he underlain by a succession of marine sediments, hitherto virtually unknown, and a more or less detailed study of these rocks was made during the survey. A drilling programme in the Carbon Creek basin is being planned by the owners of coal lands there, and theresult of this work is expected to provide muchmore infor- mation on the continuity and tonnage of the coal deposits, and may also indicate some modification tothe stratigraphy and structure as interpretedby the writer from surface exposures. One month in 1944 was spent in field-work, chiefly in the Carbon Creek basin, and two months in 1945 chiefly in the area south-east of the Carbon Creek basin and in the Pine River Valley. -

Well and core based sequence stratigraphy reveals broad facies belts and sharp-based shoreline parasequence sets, reflecting progradation into shallow water; and, an initial strongly progradational to subsequently dominantly aggradational parasequence set stacking pattern within the Spirit River Formation clastic wedge. -

Reservoir Characterisation of the Bluesky Formation at Shell Canada’s Carmon Creek Thermal Project, Northwestern Alberta, Peace River Oil Sands Area: An Example of Interdisciplinary Data Integration Mark L. Caplan* Shell Canada Energy, Calgary, AB, Canada [email protected] and Bob Lamond and Duncan MacKay Shell Canada Energy, Calgary, AB, Canada Asset Summary The Peace River Oil Sands Area of northwestern Alberta contains over 155 billion barrels of bitumen in-place. These oil sands deposits are host to Shell Canada’s largest thermal in-situ project, referred to as Carmon Creek. The Carmon Creek Project covers an area of over 285 km2, contains over seven billion barrels of bitumen in-place and is located across townships 84 to 86, and ranges 16 to 19 west of the 5th Meridian. Bitumen has been produced from Township 85 Range 18 west 5th Meridian for almost 40 years. During that time, various methods were tried and tested to extract bitumen from the reservoir, including pressure steam drive, steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and various forms of cyclic steam stimulation (CSS). After much persistence and perseverance, it was decided that the main process for bitumen extraction would be by cyclic steam stimulation. In this process, steam will be injected for a certain period of time into the formation by horizontal wells placed low in the reservoir. Once the steam injection cycle is complete, the wells become shut-in for several months after which they are opened during a production cycle. The process is repeated several times until bitumen production volumes per cycle fall below a certain critical threshold. -

Selected Studies on Terrestrial Vertebrate Palaeoichnology of Western Canada by Richard Todd McCrea A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Alberta © Richard Todd McCrea, 2016 ABSTRACT The past quarter century has seen a marked increase in the recognition of fossil vertebrate tracksites in western Canada, primarily in Alberta and British Columbia. Notable new finds include the first record of sauropods in Canada, evidence of herding behavior in tyrannosaurs and ankylosaurs, multiple avian track sites nearly spanning the entire Cretaceous Period, and recognition and description of pathologies from footprints. First discoveries of track specimens from several formations in western Canada include the Mountain Park Member of the Gates Formation in Alberta, and the Boulder Creek, Goodrich, Kaskapau, Cardium and Marshybank formations in northeastern British Columbia. Significant finds continue to be made in the Wapiti Formation in western Alberta near Grande Cache and in northeastern British Columbia. Tracks are virtually unknown from pre-Cretaceous rocks in western Canada, with the only possible exception being the last stage of the Jurassic (Tithonian). The majority of the oldest tracksites are found in and around the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, whereas the younger tracksites are found in the Foothills and Plains of both British Columbia and Alberta. The record of fossil vertebrate tracks in western Canada is important for filling the temporal gaps in known occurrences of terrestrial vertebrates left by a sparse skeletal record. Fossil tracks and trackways can also be used to interpret the behavior, biomechanics and ecology of extinct animals in ways not possible to realize solely from the study of skeletal remains.
