In this week of celebration we have two special nights to honor past and present generations of local athletes – the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Monday, where we honor past athletes, coaches and community leaders, and An Evening with the Athletes on Wednesday, where we honor our current high school and college Athletes of the Year, scholarship President’s recipients, special awards and Coaches of the Year.

The SBART is honored to welcome the 2017 SBART Hall of Fame class. We are inducting four outstanding athletes, one very deserving coach and one leader in special achievement. Cara Gamberdella The athletes represent a cross-section of sports and have excelled nationally on the collegiate, professional and Olympic stages; the coach has touched countless young volleyball prospects, including future Olympians and coaches, in his over 23 years in the gym and on the sand; and the leader in special achievement has coached and developed scores of collegiate and professional phenoms and has been a leader in fostering junior tennis in our area.

The 2016-17 athletic year has been a great one. If you have attended any of our Monday Press Luncheons at Harry’s, you know that our high school and college student-athletes and coaches have been celebrating great successes both on and off the field all year. We honor all of our teams and individuals who made it to the playoffs and beyond in addition to excelling in the classroom and in school and community leadership.

I am honored to have served the final year of a two-year appointment as the SBART Board

President. I extend a very sincere “thank you” to all of our very generous sponsors and Message members. I would like to recognize specifically the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors Message and their Charity Golf Tournament. This year the SBART was chosen as the tournament beneficiary. Thanks to the tireless work of the SBAOR Events Committee, chaired by Drew Wakefield, the tournament – which was just held this past Friday – was a wild success. The numbers are not in, but we do know that the generosity of the tournament sponsors and the work of the event committee means the SBART will be the appreciative recipient of a donation that will truly be a game-changer for our ability to continue our mission and enhance our programs in the future.

I extend a deep appreciation for all of the hard-working members of the SBART Board of Directors. The SBART has no paid staff; we are truly a “working board” with countless committee meetings, luncheons and long hours spent, coupled with the financial generosity of our sponsors and members, to keep the SBART mission moving forward. Last, but not least, a very hearty “thank you” to our local sports media for covering our luncheons, working together to honor our student-athletes with weekly and end-of-year awards and for publically sharing all of the great sports stories from our high schools and colleges each and every day.

As a former high school teacher, I know that student-athletes learn lessons on the field and on the court that translate into academic success, social confidence and lifelong skills in teamwork, discipline, organization and goal-setting. The Round Table plays an important part in reminding all of these students that they are doing the right thing. Additionally, the camaraderie the SBART helps build among our local coaches, athletes, press and community encourages many of our athletes to give back to the athletic community for many years after their playing years are over.

Thank you to all of you in attendance tonight for showing your support for our local student-athletes, coaches, community leaders, sports media and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. 2017

Almost five decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area.

The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members.

The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College onJune 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million for local athletics.

Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September

Founders Founders 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds.

Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend.

It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka.

*Memberships as of 5/5/17. This list may be incomplete due to renewals and/or timing. Our apologies for any omissions. 2017 The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table honors the lives of two long-time Board Members

Larry Crandell: 1923-2016

Affectionately known as “Mr. Santa Barbara”, Larry Crandell was an original SBART board member and a part of our organization from the beginning. His fundraising prowess is legendary, and the SBART still calls “the ask” for memberships at March Madness “Crandell-izing” the crowd. Holding the honor of SBART Chairman of the Board for as long as anyone can remember, Crandell is credited with raising over $200 million for local charities over nearly six decades. The Larry Crandell Memorial Scholarship, in its first year, will be awarded at this week’s SBART Evening with the Athletes event.

Phil Womble: 1936-2017

Born with ceberal palsy, Phil Womble was the Memorium embodiment of optimism, resilience, intelligence and, above all, humor. He lived his life as he titled his autobiography, “Never Give Up!” An ardent fan of all sports, especially all things UCSB Gaucho, Phil was a UCSB Sports Historian

In since 1969 and a SBART Board Member and the Board Historian. The SBART Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award is awarded monthly to a high school junior who shows exemplary sportsmanship and character. 2017 LISA WILLETT FRY

Outstanding Athlete Hall of Hall

Lisa Willett Fry is one of the most decorated student athletes in Santa Barbara. At Santa Barbara High, she won numerous league, CIF and local honors for her performances on the and volleyball courts. In her basketball career at UCSB, she played in more than 125 games and went to the NCAA Tournament three straight years while maintaining a GPA that earned academic honors from the school and the Big West Conference.

Willett’s Santa Barbara High basketball honors include: four-time All-County Team (1997-2000), two-time County MVP (1999-2000), three-time All-CIF (1998-2000), two-time Round Table Basketball Player of the Year (1999-2000) and a Nike Camp All-American (1999). She averaged 20 points a game as a senior and 16 as junior, and broke Round

Table Hall of Famer Kristin Knapp’s career scoring record at SBHS. Fame She also starred in volleyball, earning All-Channel League, All-County and All-CIF Fame honors three times.

Recruited by several major programs in basketball, Willett chose to stay home and play for UCSB. She was a key player for three consecutive Gaucho teams that made the NCAA Tournament, including the 2003-04 squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 and gave powerhouse Connecticut a battle before losing in Hartford, Conn.

Basketball, however, was just small part of Willett’s college life. She excelled in the classroom and earned several awards for her hard work and diligence: three-time UCSB Women’s Basketball Excellence in Scholarship, three-time Big West All-Academic team, two-time Verizon Academic All-American, two-time Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year and two-time UCSB Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete recipient.

Willett received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UCSB in religious studies, with a minor in sports management. She earned a Masters in Leadership in Educational Technology from Cal State University, East Bay.

Today, she is a 1st grade teacher at Palmer School in Walnut Creek. She is married to Joel Fry, and they have a 2-year-old son, Everett. 2017 GERARDO JIMENEZ Outstanding Athlete

Gerardo Jimenez helped raise the level of soccer at Dos Pueblos High. He sparked the Chargers to three straight Channel League championships and, in 1983, he led them to a CIF-Southern Section title. They played Camarillo to a 3-3 tie. In those days, the CIF didn’t play overtime in the finals and the teams were declared co-champions.

Jimenez stayed in town and played three seasons at Westmont College before transferring to San Diego State. He flourished with the Aztecs, helping them reach the NCAA Division 1 Final Four in 1987. In the national semifinals against perennial power UCLA, he scored a goal and assisted on the game winner as San Diego State scored a huge upset, beating the Bruins 2-1. San Diego State finished as the national runner-up,

Fame losing to Clemson in the final.

Jimenez was a natural goal scorer. “The best thing about him was he knew where to be and could finish,” said Cam Camerena, who coached Gerardo on Santa Barbara’s first club soccer team, the Gladiators.

Jimenez made his mark right away at DP. He made second-team all-Channel League as a freshman in 1980 and the next year earned league MVP honors as a sophomore after leading the Chargers to the title. He also was named second-team All-CIF, DP’s Offensive MVP and the Round Table’s Soccer Player of the Year.

He repeated as the league MVP and Round Table Player of the Year and earned first- team All-CIF honors as a junior. In addition, he was named to the Southern Section U-17 Select Team and was invited to try out for the Junior OIympic team.

Hall of As a senior, Jimenez was chosen the CIF 4A Division Soccer MVP and won his third straight league MVP and Round Table Player of the Year honor. He also was named to the McDonald’s Far West First Team.

In his three years at Westmont, he earned All-Far West honors three times, including first- team accolades as a sophomore and junior.

He was voted the Top Newcomer Award at San Diego State in 1987. In 2002, he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame as a member of that 1987 national runner-up squad. 2017 MARK WARKENTIN

Outstanding Athlete Hall of Hall Mark Warkentin is proof you can go home again.

After all over the world, Warkentin is back where he started in competitive swimming, the Santa Barbara Swim Club. The 2008 U.S. Olympian, four-time All- American at USC and four-time CIF-Southern Section champion at San Marcos High, is now developing youth swimmers as coach of the club.

Warkentin was a phenom at San Marcos High from 1994-98. He never lost an individual event in his four years swimming for the Royals in dual meets and league finals. He holds school records in five events and is the league record holder in the 500 freestyle.

He continued his success in college at USC and at the international level. He placed eighth in the 400 free at the 1996 Olympic Trials, won a gold medal in the 400 free at the 1998 Goodwill Games and took home five golds (200, 400 and 800 freestyle, 4x200

free relay and open water events) from the 1999 World University Games.

Fame Fame He turned his focus to open water swimming and became one of best in the world. He won the 25k race at the USA Swimming National championships and took bronze medals in the 5k and 10k races in 2006. That same year, he captured the 10k at the World Cup in Belem, Brazil, where in the swift current of the Amazon River, he was timed in a blazing 1 hour, 26 minutes.

“The 2006 race was the last World Cup race ever held in the Amazon,” he said.

In 2007, Warkentin placed fourth in the 25k at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, repeated as the 25k national champion and again won bronze in the 5k and 10k and won the 10k at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In 2009, he earned a silver in the 25k and took seventh in the 10k at the World Championships in Seville, Spain, to earn a spot in the field at 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

He dug deep to qualify for the Olympics. “Only the top 10 finishers from this race would qualify, and with 3,000 meters left I was in a tightly bunched group of (approximately) eight athletes vying for the last four spots,” Warkentin said. “The physical nature of that 3,000 meters resulted in two red card ejections from the race. After 90 minutes of fast- paced swimming, the final 30-minute sprint was the longest sustained period of pain I’ve ever endured.”

He finished eighth in the first open-water competition in Olympic history.

In 2010, he competed in the Faros Marathon Swim in Croatia and took first place. 2017 DONALD YOUNG Outstanding Athlete

The success Donald Young has experienced in his life can be traced back to his days of playing for the legendary Scott O’Leary at Dos Pueblos. Young was a three-year starter for O’Leary’s Chargers, helping them win a Channel League championship in his senior year of 1975. He earned All-CIF honors that year and became a first-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves. He was scouted by baseball Hall of Famer and Santa Barbara High legend Eddie Mathews. “Coach O’Leary and baseball taught me how to prepare, how to be a good teammate and how to compete.” says Young. “Those are lessons that have added great richness to many aspects in my life, including academics, family, business and friendships.” In his third season of pro baseball, Young’s path in life took a dramatic turn. He was hit in the face by a pitch during spring training of 1977 and suffered broken bones.

Fame “A bright spot was that if you are ever going to break your face, it is good to do it in Palm Beach, Fla., where there are a lot of very expert plastic surgeons,” he cracked. It was during those frustrating and lonely periods of downtime after rehab that he reflected on his future. “It helped me put in perspective baseball as a career versus the possibility of going to college,” he said. While he loved to play baseball, Young said he learned after he stopped playing that it wasn’t just the game he loved, it was the opportunity to compete. “And life is full of opportunities to compete,” he says. He took his competitive spirit to Harvard, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1982 and a MBA from the Business School in 1984. He’s made a name for himself in the business world. Since 2001, he’s been the President and CEO of Aspen Aerogels, a leading energy technology company in Massachusetts.

Hall of Donald and his wife of 32 years, Caroline, have three children, Charlie (32), Natalie (29) and Mollie (24). They have one granddaughter, Georgia, the daughter of Charlie and his wife, Laura. Donald’s story of success always stuck with O’Leary. He recalls a story O’Leary told him several years after he graduated from DP. “Some parents were visiting the school to see if it was right for their ballplayer son. They figured out quickly that Coach O’Leary was special so they focused instead on exploring the academics at DP. Scott said to them in a nonchalant sort of way that, ‘Yes, the academics are strong at DP. In fact, one of our better ballplayers, Don Young, is at Harvard now after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round.’ “It was all the parents needed to hear. Scott had that twinkle in his eye when he told me the story. It really made me proud that Coach O’Leary thought that I reflected well on the school and the baseball program.” 2017 JON LEE Coach Inductee

Jon Lee was born into a basketball family and a family of educators.

Educating always has been a big part of his life’s mission. But when it came to sports, he

forged his own path and found his passion in volleyball. The sport has not only enriched Hall of Hall his life but the lives of hundreds of local youth and youth around the world.

Lee served as the head volleyball coach for the boys and girls varsity teams as well as a respected English teacher at San Marcos High from 1986 to 2009. He guided the Royals to several Channel League titles, won three CIF-Southern Section championships, sent numerous student athletes to play in college, and inspired more than 40 of his former players go into the coaching ranks. Among them are Jason Donnelly (Rutgers University, Bishop Diego, Laguna Blanca), Erica Menzel (San Marcos), Dwayne Hauschild (Dos Pueblos & San Marcos), Dave Goss (Providence), Todd Rogers (Laguna Blanca, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO).

Lee had such an impact on student athletes at San Marcos that the school named the gym court after him.

Lee’s vast knowledge of the game helped propel Rogers, Dax Holdren and Brook Fame Billings to become Olympians. Holdren finished fifth in beach volleyball at the 2004 Fame Olympics in Athens, Greece. Billings played on the U.S. Indoor team in Athens. Rogers won the gold medal in beach volleyball at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China and is recognized as one of the all-time best players in the world.

He has done just about everything imaginable in the sport of volleyball. He played four years at UCSB and won a national indoor championship in 1969, beating UCLA in the U.S. Volleyball Association final. He earned second-team All-American honors three times. He still dabbled in basketball while attending UCSB, winning a two-on-two intramural title with Michael Berger in 1968.

He went overseas and played two years of professional volleyball in Mallorca, Spain, winning a second division Spanish national championship in 1974. He returned to Santa Barbara and played a season with the Santa Barbara Spikers pro team of the International Volleyball Association.

Lee then devoted himself to beach volleyball and played 12 years at the highest level. His playing partners included his younger brother Greg Lee, who was the point guard on back-to-back (1972-73) NCAA championship basketball teams at UCLA, John Hanley (SBHS alum), Karch Kiraly (SBHS alum), Don Shaw and Larry “Boomer’ Milliken.

He’s continued to play on the sand after his glory years and has won nine divisional titles at the Motherlode Volleyball Classic in Aspen, Colo.

Lee is also skillful with words, and that talent led to a gig as a senior editor for Volleyball Magazine. The job allowed him to travel all over the world, including Cuba. His expertise in volleyball combined with his loquaciousness helped land him a broadcasting job with ESPN. 2017 LARRY MOUSOURIS Special Achievement

“My calling has been coaching and developing young individuals.”

Larry Mousouris has done remarkably well in those areas during his long career coaching at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club.

His list of pupils is quite impressive. It includes Allison Hardey, who led Santa Barbara High to four CIF titles, won a NCAA team championship at Stanford and was recently inducted into the SBHS Hall of Fame; Harvard Hall of Fame inductee and Dos Pueblos alum Kathy Vigna, the first player to earn All-Ivy League honors all four years at Harvard; Round Table Hall of Famers and Channel League singles champions Amelia White (SBHS), Kara Warkentin (San Marcos) and Lola Trenwith (SBHS). On the boys’ side, there’s NCAA Division 1 All-Americans like Mark Wooldridge, Alex Nizet and Chase Fame Melton; nationally ranked boys like Spencer Simon and Heath Montgomery. There’s Mike Falberg, a two-time CIF singles champion at Santa Barbara High, an NCAA team champion at Stanford and the1980 U.S. Open junior champion; 1985 U.S. Open Junior Champion and No. 3 world-ranked Tim Trigueiro, a four-time Channel League champion for Santa Barbara High.

Most recently, he’s helped develop teenager Kayla Day. She won the 2016 U.S. Open Junior title and was ranked the No. 1 junior by the International Tennis Federation before turning professional. She’s playing on the women’s world tour.

Tennis always been a huge part of Mousouris’ life. He was the No. 1 singles player for a Channel League-champion San Marcos team back in the mid-1960s. He played collegiately at SBCC and Cal Poly and earned honors at both schools. He was the SBCC team MVP and the Round Table College Tennis Player of the Year in 1968. At Cal Poly, he was team captain and MVP of the second-ranked Mustangs team in Division

Hall of 2. He won the CCAA singles and doubles championships in 1970, reached the Division 2 singles quarterfinals and doubles final and earned All-American honors.

He said leading Cal Poly to its first conference title in 25 years and a second-place place in NCAA D2 is one of his greatest moments as a player.

Mousouris played professional tennis for a short time, specifically as a doubles partner with Bob Hochstader and Jim Slaught.

He became a teaching pro and the tennis director at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club in 1972. He coached at SBCC in 1988-89 and was named the Western State Conference Coach of the Year in ’88.

He’s been a staunch supporter for tennis in the community, raising funds for the men’s and women’s programs at UCSB, City College and Santa Barbara High, in addition to the Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons, a grassroots organization that promotes junior tennis throughout our area. He is currently serving on the Tennis Patrons Board. Master Athlete Award 2017 MIKE POWER In January 2016, a surfing accident left Mike Power with a broken back, three crushed vertebrae and no exercise for six weeks. He tried getting in the water but could swim very little and could not do flip turns. Despite this setback, Power has excelled as a master swimmer over the last year and a half.

As any competitor would do, he decided this injury would be a great start to a lofty goal of competing at the 2016 Master Nationals!! Still not 100 percent, he competed in the 45-49 age group in August 2016 in Gresham, Ore. Power notched a 3rd place finish in the 50M backstroke, 4th in the 200M free, 4th in the 50M free, 5th in the 100 free and 6th in the 50M butterfly.

In 2016 Power made the “2016 US Masters National Top 10” long course meters rankings in the 50M free (10th), 100M free (8th) and 200M free (8th) in the 45-49 age group.

In December 2016, Power competed at the Fall Southern Pacific Regional Short Course Meters championships and placed 1st in the 50M free, 1st in the 100M free, 2nd in the 50M butterfly and 3rd in the 100M backstroke

He made the “2016 US Masters National Top 10” short course meters rankings in the 50M free (4th), 100M free (5th) and 50M butterfly (6th) in the 45-49 age group.

Awards Power competes for Santa Barbara Masters and is a Santa Barbara High alumnus (1986) and Wheaton College graduate (1991). He is married to Heather and is with the University of California Police, stationed at UCSB.

This award was established and endowed by Louise Lowry Davis to encourage the continued participation in competitive sports, regardless of age. It is given for achievement by an athlete over the age of 40 years.
