Ohio University The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Nadine Sanchara April, 2016 The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Introduction/Background Music is an integral part of Guyanese culture. Being a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society, musical encounters, musical interaction and musical exchange are of special importance, especially in exploring the transfer and adoption of musical attributes across and among cultural communities (Cambridge 6). This paper aims at highlighting the extent to which alcohol use is glamorized in Guyanese Chutney music. Since music can influence action (Engels et al. 530) it is important to understand the lyrics of these songs in order to begin to tackle a larger problem. Chutney music is often referred to as an “Indo-Caribbean” genre of music, present in the Caribbean, mainly in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname. It is largely influenced by Indian music, particularly Bhojpuri folk music (Bhojpuri is a language spoken in some Indian regions such as Utar Pradesh and Bihar, from where many Indian immigrants were brought to Guyana during indentureship). Chutney music does, however, have influences from African, Western and other cultures. It is a fast paced genre of music which makes use of instruments such as the harmonium, dhantaal, dholak and tabla, among others (Ramnarine 12). As much a part of Guyanese culture as Chutney music is the culture of “rum drinking.” As of 2010, the average Guyanese over 15 years old consumed more than eight liters of pure alcohol each year, compared to a global average of 6.2 liters (WHO 155). A study conducted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2008 revealed that alcohol is the number one drug abused in Guyana (1). -

He is the political leader of the United National Congress Alliance (“UNC-A”), the member of Parliament for the constituency of Couva North in the House of Representatives, the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago 1. He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1976 and in 1991 founded the United National congress (“UNC”) the predecessor to the UNC-A. He together with his wife, Oma Panday (“the second Claimant”) were both charged with the indictable offence of having committed an offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act No. 11 of 1987 namely: that on or about 30 th December 1998, they corruptly received from Ishwar Galbaransingh and Carlos John, an advantage in the sum of GBP 25,000 as a reward on account for the first Claimant, for favouring the interests of Northern Construction Limited in relation to the construction of the then new Piarco International Airport 2. -

Toussaint In this paper the Spanish Main is taken to refer to the broad area stretching from Mexico to the southern tip of South America, only part of which was affected by East Indian immigration1. Until recently, little research was done regarding migration from the Caribbean to South America. A largely unexplored dimension of this phenomenon is the late nineteenth-century illegal migration of a number of Indian immigrant labourers who had been brought to the Caribbean under indenture contracts. This paper seeks to bring this migration phenomenon into focus. It examines the circumstances surrounding the illegal emigration of these Indians to the South American mainland, their experience there and the British government’s handling of this problem. Also discussed is the cultural impact of those Indian immigrants who remained on the mainland. The overall number of Indian emigrants is unknown and undoubtedly small. Ours, however, is a qualitative rather than quantitative discourse, intended to broaden the context and scope of Indian migration, and our appreciation of the myriad dimensions of their diaspora. Theoretical and Epistemological Issues There are two fundamental and reciprocating nuances to Caribbean migration historiography. Firstly, it emphasizes the movement of labour, whether forced or voluntary. Secondly, from this, historical enquiry remains focused on in-migration to the region. Out-migration, significant as part of the Caribbean experience from the inception of European and Caribbean contact, has been studied as an afterthought. One result is that the complexity of Caribbean migration has been significantly obscured2. -

Paper presented at Counterpoints Flinders University Postgraduate Conference South Australia 19 -20 April 2001 E-mail Sheila James: [email protected] ABSTRACT On the eve of departure of the British from India, the Anglo-Indians found themselves in an invidious situation - caught between the European attitude of superiority towards Indian and Anglo-Indian alike and the Indian mistrust of them, due to their aloofness and their Western - oriented culture. One of the problems the Anglo-Indian community has always faced is one of ‘Identity’. In the early days of the colonial rule it was difficult for the Anglo-Indians to answer with certainty the question "Who am I?" As a genuine community consciousness developed this identity dilemma lessened but it was never firmly resolved. With the British leaving India and as opportunities for a resolution of identity conflict through migration faded a new identity orientation was necessary. Many Anglo-Indians, who were unable to make such a turn-about of identity and feeling insecure without the protective imperial umbrella, opted to leave India. Thus, victims of dilemma and indiscretion throughout their existence thousands of Anglo-Indians left for safe shores - Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. For Anglo-Indians who have left India and settled abroad a similar problem of Identity again arises. The Keys to British Success in South Asia COLIN WATTERSON “God is on everyone’s side…and in the last analysis he is on the side with plenty of money and large armies” -Jean Anouilh For a period of a period of over one hundred years, the British directly controlled the subcontinent of India. How did a small island nation come on the Edge of the North Atlantic come to dominate a much larger landmass and population located almost 4000 miles away? Historian Sir John Robert Seeley wrote that the British Empire was acquired in “a fit of absence of mind” to show that the Empire was acquired gradually, piece-by-piece. This will paper will try to examine some of the most important reasons which allowed the British to successfully acquire and hold each “piece” of India. This paper will examine the conditions that were present in India before the British arrived—a crumbling central political power, fierce competition from European rivals, and Mughal neglect towards certain portions of Indian society—were important factors in British control. Economic superiority was an also important control used by the British—this paper will emphasize the way trade agreements made between the British and Indians worked to favor the British. Military force was also an important factor but this paper will show that overwhelming British force was not the reason the British military was successful—Britain’s powerful navy, ability to play Indian factions against one another, and its use of native soldiers were keys to military success. Political Agendas and Indian Historical Approaches The historiography of India has gone through four major phases—three of which have been driven by the prevailing world politics of the time. -

Celebrating our Calypso Monarchs 1939-1980 T&T History through the eyes of Calypso Early History Trinidad and Tobago as most other Caribbean islands, was colonized by the Europeans. What makes Trinidad’s colonial past unique is that it was colonized by the Spanish and later by the English, with Tobago being occupied by the Dutch, Britain and France several times. Eventually there was a large influx of French immigrants into Trinidad creating a heavy French influence. As a result, the earliest calypso songs were not sung in English but in French-Creole, sometimes called patois. African slaves were brought to Trinidad to work on the sugar plantations and were forbidden to communicate with one another. As a result, they began to sing songs that originated from West African Griot tradition, kaiso (West African kaito), as well as from drumming and stick-fighting songs. The song lyrics were used to make fun of the upper class and the slave owners, and the rhythms of calypso centered on the African drum, which rival groups used to beat out rhythms. Calypso tunes were sung during competitions each year at Carnival, led by chantwells. These characters led masquerade bands in call and response singing. The chantwells eventually became known as calypsonians, and the first calypso record was produced in 1914 by Lovey’s String Band. Calypso music began to move away from the call and response method to more of a ballad style and the lyrics were used to make sometimes humorous, sometimes stinging, social and political commentaries. During the mid and late 1930’s several standout figures in calypso emerged such as Atilla the Hun, Roaring Lion, and Lord Invader and calypso music moved onto the international scene.
