Founder of Sarah Tucker College

“Rome was not built in a day and so was Sarah Tucker College”.

During the early decades of the 19th Century when the benefits of schools were reaped only by boys, Girls were prohibited to learn from male teachers. So if the lamp of learning were to be carried into the dark recesses of the Indian Villages and towns some acceptable method was to be devised. The Missionary Societies met the problem by appealing for women missionaries to come out to India and take up the task of educating their Indian

Sisters.Several women missionaries volunteered for service in India. The most important among them was „Sarah Tucker‟, an invalid lady confined to her room, who was to become the far-off and almost fairy-like founder of the schools and college who so fittingly bear her name moved by reports about illiterate Women of India, she steeped in with a crusading spirit to provide schools for them. Seated at her desk, she wrote letters to her friends appealing for funds. Miss Sarah Tucker‟s 24 Sovereigns came handy to open „ Tinnevelly Female Normal School‟ in 1843. Miss Sarah Tucker died in December, 1857. But her friends raised funds to open a „Training School for Women‟ at Palayamcottai. The Sarah Tucker Institutions are to be remembered as the nursery of some pioneer institutions for the education of the handicapped in the whole of India. After three decades of resolute spadework, the Upper Primary Boarding School attached to the Training Institution was upgraded as the „Sarah Tucker High School;‟ in 1890 with 5 Girl students. Miss Askwith had the Confidence and Courage to raise the Sarah Tucker High School to a Second Grade College and get it affiliated to the in 1895 as the First College exclusively for women in the whole of India to the South of Lucknow.

To prepare and empower the students for life by imparting holistic education encompassing the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual facets and attributes is the core essence of our pedagogy and training. In the College I believe that the training of the mind to develop lateral thinking and the ability to be able to process knowledge and information in a critical and analytical manner which are very essential in today’s competitive world is given. Our college values the development of personal leadership in each student. Challenged by outstanding faculty and a modern, value-centered curriculum, students are fully prepared to contribute to society and to be effective leaders of social change based on the ethical values and principles taught in the college. The skills to be developed in order to interpret and apply the knowledge imbibed and to provide solutions to complex problems along with the ability to make informed decisions is a very essential quality much sought in the modern world. Thus we ensure that these skills are developed by benchmarking our teaching and training to the best global practices and research. The true goal of education is not to be self-serving but to serve and contribute to society with empathy and generosity. The college has scaled new heights of glory coupled with widespread achievements in the spheres of cultural, curricular activities and global interaction. The new millennium brings global competition in the field of education also. Keeping in view the trade of the time of trans-continental exchange of concepts and methodologies in the recent years, the college has been trying to accord importance to hi-tech teaching methodologies and infrastructural facilities to introduce courses which are the need of the hour. The Vision and Mission Vision Statement To be an institute of excellence where young girls can achieve full potential to their academic, creative, physical and spiritual development so as to become empowered and worthy citizens capable of nurturing the society and the nation. Motto “So run that ye may obtain the incorruptible crown” Mission Statement Service through knowledge Sarah Tucker College is the happy realization of a differently abled English lady Miss.Sarah Tucker. Confined to her room as she was in England, she desired to bring light in the lives of women folk in and around Tirunelveli. The college was established in 1895 and has the pride of being recognized as the first college for women in South India. In the 124 years of existence the strength has swelled to 3500 students. Continuous growth of the college over the years bears witness to the organizational health of the institution. The mission of the college is implicit in its motto “So run that ye may obtain the incorruptible crown”. The college believes that service to humanity (is the key to obtaining) the “incorruptible crown”.

It was in the early decades of the 19th century, education was denied for girls, where as the fruits of education were tasted and cherished only by boys. Due to this marginalisation of girls, there arose a need to remove the veil of darkness that was put upon the girls. The Missionary societies came forward to eradicate this darkness, by sending several woman missionaries who willingly stepped out to India with cheer and dedication. The most prominent of them was Miss. Sarah Tucker, for she was invalid but stooped up with a true crusading spirit, in sowing seeds to open schools and colleges for women. She was on wheels in her desk to write to her friends appealing for funds. Her 24 sovereigns came handly to open „Tirunelveli Female Normal school‟ in 1843. Miss Sarah Tucker died in December 1857. But her mission was continued by her friends by raising funds to open a Training schools for Women‟ in Palayamkottai.

COLLEGE CAMPUS

The Sarah Tucker Institutions have pioneered many other institutions for the education of girls and the handicapped in the whole of India. After three years of determined spadework the Upper Primary Boarding School attached to the Training Institution was upgraded as the Sarah Tucker High School, in 1890 with 5 girl students. Miss Askwith had the confidence and courage to raise the Sarah Tucker High School to a Second Grade College and get it affiliated to the University of Madras in 1895 as the first college exclusively for women in the whole of India to the South of Lucknow. This is a recognized Christian Minority institution owned and managed by Tirunelveli Diocesan Trust Association. The college has been illumination the minds of the young women of South India. They regularly meet and take necessary steps to formulate and implement strategic plans of the institution. They get the feedback from all the staff and study the impulses of the Institute in general and take steps for further improvements as far as they are within the capacity and recommend the management for further corrective actions. HoDs have proactive support from Principal and are provided with autonomy to decide the strategies of individual department. DIVINITY

Sarah Tucker College, the marvellous realization of God‟s love manifested through the vision and magnanimous concern of the physically challenged Miss. Sarah Tucker, takes the pride of being the first college for women in Southern India. Sarah Tucker College, established in 1895, bearing in mind the significance of education in the holistic development of girl students, imparts an overall education inclusive of spiritual and intellectual enhancement, to maintain an emotional balance between the self and the society as a good citizen. It is a Christian Minority Institution, owned and managed by the Tirunelveli Diocesan Trust Association -TDTA and is affiliated to ManomaniamSundaranar University. The college believes and marches forward in

the salubrious development of the students by offering a wide range of opportunities, apart from academic programmes. The institution has a practice of participative management. The college provides the better opportunity to all in decision making process. The college administrative and academic structure is in a manner to make the decision by participative arrangement. Secretary is the administrative head and Principal is the academic Head, followed by Vice Principal, Controller of Examination, Deans of academic affairs and department heads. The principal in consultation with all department heads the final decision is arrived at regarding academic matters. On administrative ground the Secretary is followed by the Principal, Vice Principal, Bursar and office superintendent. The necessary guidance and directives are issued through these meetings. Periodical reviews are undertaken by the top management. The budget is prepared prior to the commencement of the academic year and is approved by the management. So there is a good support from the management relating to the implementation of the objectives specially designed to attain quality teaching and learning aspects of the college. On the college level decision/deciding departments are provided with authority to take own decisions by development of department meetings, the decisions are conveyed to the principal and the final decisions are taken. Thus process is decentralization and implemented to all carrier in decision making is recorded.
