Dissatisfied with history the searching mind asks again, "And Ijcfore that, what?" The records of the careful digging of archeologists reveal, that many of the customs and hahits of the ancients are not so different in their essence from ours of today. We know that in man's rise from complete savagery, in his first fumblings toward civilization there was an impulse toward beauty and toward an expression of it. We know too, that his earliest expression was to dance to his own instinctive rhythms. I ater he sang. Still later he made instruments to accompany his dancing and his singing. At first he made pictures of his dancing and his instruments. Later he wrote about the danc- ing and his instruments. Later he wrote about the dancing and sing- ing and the music. Men have uncovered many of his pictures and his writings. From the pictures we can see what the instruments were like. We can, perhaps, reconstruct them or similar ones and hear the (luality of sound which they supplied. But no deciphering of the writings has yet disclosed to rs what combinations or sequences of sounds were used, nor what accents marked his rhythms. While one man is digging in the earth to turn up what records he may find of man's life "before that," another is studying those races who today are living in similar primitive circumstances. -

Qadar Bakhsh Baloch The Dialogue THE ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION Qadar Bakhsh Baloch “Thus we have appointed you a mid-most nation, that you may be witnesses upon mankind.” (Quran, 11:43) ISLAM WAS DESTINED to be a world religion and a civilisation, stretched from one end of the globe to the other. The early Muslim caliphates (empires), first the Arabs, then the Persians and later the Turks set about to create classical Islamic civilisation. In the 13th century, both Africa and India became great centres of Islamic civilisation. Soon after, Muslim kingdoms were established in the Malay-Indonesian world, while Muslims flourished equally in China. Islamic civilisation is committed to two basic principles: oneness of God and oneness of humanity. Islam does not allow any racial, linguistic or ethnic discrimination; it stands for universal humanism. Besides Islam have some peculiar features that distinguish it form other cotemporary civilisations. SALIENT FEATURES OF ISLAMIC CIVILISATION MAIN CHARACTERISTICS that distinguish Islamic civilisation from other civilisations and give it a unique position can be discerned as: • It is based on the Islamic faith. It is monotheistic, based on the belief in the oneness of the Almighty Allah, the Creator of this universe. It is characterised by submission to the will God and service to humankind. It is a socio-moral and metaphysical view of the world, which has indeed contributed immensely to the rise and richness of this civilisation. The author is a Ph. D. The combination of culture is manifested in the form of the mosque’s interior with various elements and ornaments. The visual form of the mosque’s interior represents the function of the building inside. In addition to its practical functions, the visuals mosque buildings provide visual meaning from the result of new formations because they get the influence of Chinese culture the characterizes the mosque so that it becomes a building of places of worship that have own character without reducing the values of Islamic law. Acculturation or cultural fusion in its applica- tion to the interior of mosque has a new form and some are only a combined form. In the discussion of this paper apply the case study approach as part of a qualitative framework, which will be discussed descriptively analytically. This method focuses on periodic observations of the object under study by looking for traces as suggested by Gehl (2013, p.24). Perhaps, the frenzied defence of cultural identity is second only to the expression of territorial nationalism. Contemporary cultures of which Islam is a resilient part are engaged in a ceaseless war of survival. Following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, Islam has come under intense scrutiny. What has followed is a feverish commitment to the obliteration of Islamic values at home and abroad and the intensification of the scheme to enthrone western culture. This development raises many legal, constitutional and sociological questions as well as questions relating to the place of Islamic culture both on the international arena and within the Nigerian jurisdiction. The paper is dedicated both to defining the place of Islamic culture vis-a-vis freedom of conscience and the constitutional safeguards in place against the prejudices that confront Islamic civilisation. Prof. Dr. International Islamic University Malaysia, [email protected] Abstract The method of teaching literature at a secondary or tertiary level has always been a matter of interest and a topic of discussion in many countries. However, not until recently has the role and importance of literature in the English and Arabic as the first or second level classrooms been given emphasis. This study examines how Arabic poems and proverbs can be used as effective methods in the teaching and learning of Arabic to non-native speakers in Malaysia. It proposes that new and more innovative and effective methods should be introduced to replace the current conventional methods of teaching Arabic. The teaching of literature; i.e., Arabic poems and proverbs requires a passion for literature itself. When the passion for literature has been instilled, language learners will enjoy their literature courses, and find them to be easier than before they had this awareness. As a result of the learners‟ advancement and acquired appreciation, they are able to access the vast linguistic treasures Arabic literature has to offer and therefore, simultaneously improve their competence in Arabic. E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT Civilization is widespread of quality civic idea, supported by full development of arts, maintained with enthusiasm to pursuit the knowledge in which many ethnicities and religions may participate. It begins from the time of the settlement of the first man on this earth. Almost every nation has contributed to the history of civilization, although the contribution may vary from one nation to another. What may distinguish one civilization from one another is the strength of the foundation on which these civilizations have been founded and the impact these civilizations have made to humanity as a whole. Based on this fact, Islamic Civilization which may be synonymous to tawhidic civilization is based on a unity of God which stands completely against any racial or ethnic discrimination. Such major racial and ethnic groups as the Arabs, Persians, Turks, Africans, Indians, Chinese and Malays in addition to numerous smaller units embraced Islam and contributed to the building of Islamic civilization. Moreover, Islam was not opposed to learning from the earlier civilizations and incorporating their science, learning, and culture into its own world view, as long as they did not oppose the principles of Islam. Indeed, historically speaking, during the period when Western civilization was experiencing the dark ages, between 700-1200 A.D, Islamic empire stretched from Central Asia to southern Europe. -

A Knowledge of other cultures is critical. You remember that cultural aware- ness is identified as a critical intercultural communication skill. In this chapter, the same categories used to describe dominant U.S. cultural values are used to learn more about Arab culture—a culture often misunderstood in the United States. This chapter is devoted to how religion and language define Arab culture and then extends that with an examination of the conservative Arab state Saudi Arabia and the more tolerant state Oman. The chapter concludes by identifying some of the communication barriers among the Arab states and the United States. As you study this chapter, make comparisons to the previous chapter on dominant U.S. cultural values. Termasuk pada perkawinan dengan berbagai prosesi di dalamnya mengandung ‘urf yang kemudian masyarakat setempat menjadikannya sebagai budaya lokal. Hal inilah yang menimbulkan timbal balik antara Islam dan budaya lokal karena adanya pengaruh yang saling mempengaruhi (akulturasi). Di Nagari Ulakan Padang Pariaman, ditemukannya Akulturasi budaya lokal dalam perkawinan terhadap ajaran Islam karena perpaduan antara budaya lokal dengan budaya yang berkembang sekarang yang di dalamnya mengandung nilai-nila agama. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui berbagai aspek budaya lokal Padang Pariaman di Nagari Ulakan khususnya mengenai perkawinan yang berasimilasi dengan pranata keagamaan. Dengan demikian, masalah pokok yang dijadikan objek penelitian di sini adalah bagaimana eksistensi hukum keluargaan Islam dalam kaitannya dengan budaya lokal mengenai adat perkawinan masyarakat di Nagari Ulakan Padang Pariaman. The Sound of Culture, The Structure of Tradition Musicians7 Work in Arab Detroit Anne Rasmussen WITH THEIR LOUD sound systems and lively dance tunes, Arab Amer- ican musicians bring to community gatherings an all-encompassing sonic environment that replaces the host culture with the home cul- ture. Night after night, performance after performance, they supply "the language of Diaspora" (Clifford 1994). While I have framed musicians as "curators of culture" and their activity as "art," they have continuously referred to the same as "work" (Rasmussen 1989, 1991). Their work, as they have told me time and again, is audience driven, and they are surprisingly compliant with the sometimes abrupt demands of their clientele. Although this way of performing cannot be reduced to a simple formula, several patterns are apparent in the careers of Arab American musicians that help explain why they tend to discuss their "art" as "work,"1 and these patterns have been in place for much of the twentieth century.
