Friday, Sept. 7, 2007: A crowd of more than 300 people enjoyed the musical talents of Beatle-gras on the courthouse square, a free concert sponsored by the Downtown Business Alliance and the Sulphur Springs tourism department. The band entertained for about an hour and a half as the audience enjoyed the cool breeze and an evening of live music. Archive Do you remember these local events that made headlines? 10 years ago Recruits of the Northeast Texas Fire Training Academy basic fire suppression class participate in “real world week,” a series of drills designed to give them a taste of what it’s really like to be a fireman. In addition to structure and vehicle fire suppression, recruits spent at least one full shift “on call” where they “responded” to various types of fire and rescue calls. 5 years ago Mark Anthony Robin-son, 45, of Sulphur Springs, a laborer at Hampton Inn, was ar- rested on a second degree felony arson charge after confessing to using fireworks to start a fire in the hotel maintenance room. The hotel was evacuated and no one was reported to have been injured as a result of the incident. 1 year ago Morgan Davis, who was in her first year as a teacher at Bowie Primary, was surprised when students and staff at Bowie held a send-off pep rally to show their support as Davis lived her childhood dream of competing in the International Triathlon Union World Tri- athlon Championship in Gold Coast, Australia. Sulphur Springs teams split Thursday night sub-varsity games played on two dif- ferent turf gridirons. The Wildcat ninth grade team won 42- 14 on the road at Lucas Lovejoy, while the Sulphur Springs junior varsity lost at home, 29-20. In the junior varsity contest, fans at Ger- ald Prim Stadium got their money’s worth in a game thriller that was finally decided in the fourth quarter. The visiting Leopards rallied late to score the final 10 points of the contest. Leopard quarterback Austin Gonzalez was the hero for the visitors, throwing four touchdown passes. Gonzalez went to work early and guided a scoring drive. The Leopards capped the drive when Gonzalez threw a 22-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Drew Turner. The try for an extra point failed, but with 5:30 to go in the first frame, the visitors drew first blood, taking a 6-0 lead. As action shifted to the second quar- ter, the Wildcat defense came up, stopping a Leopard’s drive on the Wildcats’ 5-yard line. The hometown team got their offense in high gear driving 95 yards in 12 plays. Big plays on the drive were six straight runs by Brenden Fink for 71 yards and four first downs. Jesse Bailey ran wide twice for short gains. Running back Justin Richards moved directly behind the center and took snaps from a hybrid formation.
