May 1St, 2011 1245 Carnegie Avenue Cleveland, OH. 44115 Phone 216/781-6161 Fax 216/781-6162 www.saintmaron-clev.org Sunday, MAY 1, 2011 The Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday! Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when "all the divine flood- gates through which graces flow are opened". Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of Mercy, on the Sun- day after Easter, which is now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church. Jesus promised that "The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." He went on to say "I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy." We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy "Divine Mercy Sunday". We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them too and urge them to return to the practice of their faith! The Image of The Divine Mercy, which Our Lord requested to be solemnly blessed and venerated on this day, will be on display in our church. Pope John Paul II said that the image portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said "I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish". Please take the time to visit with this Image of The Divine Mercy and venerate Jesus. Jesus said to St. Faustina "I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You". "The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the cross. …Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him." About the feast day "Divine Mercy Sunday", Jesus said "…tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy". Our Lord said "When you go to confession, to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul…" and "Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy" Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is… only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest that I am making use of; open your soul in confession to Me, and I will fill it with My light." The ministry of reconciliation 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Father, give your blessing. Brothers and Sisters: Since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade others, but we are clearly appar- ent to God, and I hope we are also apparent to your consciousness. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you an opportunity to boast of us, so that you may have something to say to those who boast of external appearance rather than of the heart. For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are rational, it is for you. For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh, even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no longer. So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was recon- ciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. Praise be to God Always!

It comes at a time when the country as a whole is torn into bits and pieces and when, following eleven years of war, the economy is in shambles: the industrial sector is virtually crippled, the wheels of commerce are slowly grinding to a halt, and the national currency is fast becoming worthless. In this tormented context, the construction sector, as will become apparent in the following pages, has incredibly maintained its resilience.

CHAPTER NOTES Chapter Notes Chapter 1 Departure From Baghdad and Farewells ﺩﺍﻟﺴﻔﺮ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻐﺪﺍ ﻭﺍ ﻟﻤﻮﺍﺩﻋﺔ page 002 1. "Thirteenth of the month" Alexander is mistaken about the date, Wednesday was the 14th of the month. 2. Mule litter: (taḫterewān) From the Persian taḫt-e revān (taḫt meaning seat or throne, revān meaning moving). It was commonly used in Iraq, sometimes in the abbreviated form taḫt. In the English diary of the return journal, Alexander used the term teḫtersin, for which we have been unable to find any references. 3. Balioz: The word Balioz was originally the Turkish form of the title of the Baglio, the Venetian representative to the Ottoman court. In later years the word 'Balioz' became a vulgar term for any foreign consul. The British Consulate or Residency in Baghdad was commonly known among the inhabitants there as "the house of the Balioz". Here the term refers to the British Consul-General. 4. Colonel Edward Mockler: The British Consul General in Baghdad from 1892 to 1897, when he was replaced by Colonel William Loch and journeyed overland to Cairo with Alexander Richard Svoboda and his parents. Born in 1839, he served in several positions in the British Army in India and the Middle East. He was also a scholar and linguist. • July & August 2016
The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume XII Issue No. VII July - August 2016 The Martyrs uly is the month of the Massabki Martyrs: three brave lay men, who gave their lives in Jdefense of their faith. But more than that, they were businessmen and family men who modeled their faith at home, way before they paid the ultimate price of martyrdom. When we think of the Massabki Brothers, and all those who have witnessed to Christ and paid the ultimate price, we think how faithful they must have been. But martyrdom is not only about those who have received their crown; it is also about us. What are we doing to deserve a similar crown? Are we also that "faithful witness," as was Jesus in the Book of Revelations, willing to die, and just as important, willing to live and witness to "Jesus Christ, and him crucified"? The Holy Father, Pope Francis, calls upon us to be Christ's witnesses, just as he asked us in this Jubilee Year to be Christ's mercy. He often reminds us that the integrity of our lives, that is, the "consistency" or "coherence," as he likes to say, must include all that we say, do, and live, as well as the way we die, as consistent with our faith in Christ. Just as mercy is consistent with the Gospel of Christ, so too our witness to him must be consistent with our personal lives. We cannot say we believe in Christ, and then live as though Christ matters little in how we spend time, money, or make choices.
