NEW!! WGNS Tips & Tricks

Fun fact: I recently pushed the Leclerc warping mill (table model) to its limits. It supposedly accommodates 22-yard warps. I tried 23.5. It was a lesson in patience and fortitude and while it is technically possible, even at 22 yards it would have been a pain in the butt. On the bright side, I tried out the kite stick method suggested in Peggy Osterkamp's weaving blog (https://peggyosterkamp.com/peggys-weaving-tips-kitestick-chaining-warps/) as an alternative for chaining warps (I have developed a wrist problem and warp chaining really aggravates it) and OH MY GOODNESS it's a been a game-changer for me! It also saves me sooooooooo much time as I don't tie any choke ties with this method—I hear the Hallelujah Chorus in my head every time I realize I get to skip that step. I've used it for 3 different warps, all over 15 yards, and honestly, I've never had such quick, smooth, tangle-free beaming experiences. I'm never going back!

Online Weaving Resources:

Virtual Classroom at Vävstuga Beth C. received this in an e-mail from Becky Ashenden at Vävstuga in Massachusetts. Becky is a great teacher and has shared videos on proportioning stripes and project planning. She has an interesting website too. https://vavstuga.com/classes/virtual.shtml

Peggy Osterkamp's Weaving Blog Peggy has written books and made videos on Weaving How-To's. Recently she has been posting a series of helpful ideas and other interesting things on her blog. Older posts have pictures from her frequent weaving trips to Japan. https://peggyosterkamp.com

Drafts, Drafts & More Drafts www.handweaving.net is an unbelievable resource for weaving drafts. Kris Bruland has collected 69,847 weaving drafts from historical texts, guilds, published collections, and more. A $25/year subscription helps Kris keep improving the website and entitles you to view, print and download the full drafts. WORTH IT!!

NEW!! Book Corner

This month’s book is a favorite of mine. It was republished in paperback in 2014 and is available on Amazon. Laila Lundell, The Big Book of Weaving. Handweaving in the Swedish Tradition: Techniques, Patterns, Designs and Materials, Revised & Edited Edition with Elisabeth Windesjo, translated from Swedish by Carole Huebscher Rhoades, 2005 & 2008, Trafalgar Square Books, Vermont, reviewed by Beth Coughlin

This is a fantastic book with a step-by-step approach to tackling a wide range of weaving projects while teaching just about everything one needs to know about weaving. All the projects are for things I can use, from towels to pillows to throws to rugs to scarves to wall decorations and all embrace Swedish techniques and aesthetics. There is a weaver, Karen Eisenhower, whose blog I enjoy, who approached this book as a curriculum in Swedish weaving and spent seven years weaving through it, one project at a time. She posted a list of all the projects, the warps & wefts she used for each and a video of all the things she wove. https://warpedforgood.com/the-big-book-of-weaving/.

When I looked to see if this book was still in print on Amazon, a few of the reviews complained that it is only applicable to Swedish style countermarch and counterbalance looms. It’s true that there is detailed information about setting up Swedish-style looms, but there are so many techniques and tricks that are applicable to all looms and weaving situations; it’s like spending time with Robyn Spady! I do have a Glimakra countermarch loom so I especially appreciate the illustrations and explanations, but I think anyone would enjoy the beautiful project ideas and the depth of the content.

Reading through the book really is like taking a class in the fundamentals of weaving (something I have never done!). In addition to the discussions of setting up the loom (warping from back to front), there are sections on keeping project notes, calculating yarn quantities, choosing materials, rag rug considerations, determining warp sett and weft density, weaving tools and how to use them, weave drafting and techniques. The projects are teaching tools for a wide variety of technique and structures: Plain Weave, Rosepath, Bound Rosepath, Drall, Half Drall, , Double Weave, , , Monks Belt, Tapestry, Rya Knotting, and more. Only three of the 40 projects require a loom with more than 8 shafts. Many use 4 shafts.

This is a very well-written and accessible book that I go back to appreciate frequently. I have woven several of the projects but I am tempted to follow Karen Eisenhower’s example and use it as an instructional guide. Of course, she’s retired and lives in a beautiful house with her husband and all her looms in the quiet Texas hill country…
