FRIDAY FAST FACTS

 The last semi-final spot in the Nitto ATP Finals will be decided on Friday among three players, led by year- end World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, who is the defending champion. Stefanos Tsitsipas has already qualified into the semi-finals by winning his first two matches in Group Andre Agassi. Here are the scenarios for the last semi-final spot:

 In the day session, Nadal brings a 4-1 head-to-head record against Tsitsipas, who has yet to drop a set this week. In fact, the 21-year-old Greek star is the only player yet to lose a match in the tournament. Nadal is trying to reach the semi-finals for the sixth time, first since 2015. Nadal is 5-2 in final group matches. Here are the semi-final scenarios: 1) Zverev advances to the SFs IF he defeats Medvedev 2) Zverev advances to the SFs IF he loses to Medvedev in three sets, AND Tsitsipas defeats Nadal 3) Nadal advances to the SFs IF he defeats Tsitsipas AND Medvedev defeats Zverev 4) Medvedev advances to the SFs IF he defeats Zverev in 2 sets AND Tsitsipas defeats Nadal

 In the evening session, Zverev takes a 4-1 head-to-head record against Medvedev, who won the last meeting in the final of ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai on 13 October. That was also the Russian’s last win. He is looking to break a three-match losing streak and earn his 60th win of the season (59-20). If Zverev wins, he will advance to the semi-finals for the second straight year and face Thiem in the SFs on Saturday.

 There are three teams in Group still in contention for the final semi-final spot (SF scenarios on page 5). Last year’s Nitto ATP Finals finalists Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut have already qualified for the semi-finals. The year-end No. 1 duo of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah take on Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies for the first time. In the evening session, 2015 Nitto ATP Finals champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau square off with Herbert and Mahut for the fifth time (tied 2-2). They have split their two previous Nitto ATP Finals meetings (in 2015 and 2017).

WEDNESDAY FAST FACTS

 The two youngest players in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings square off on Wednesday in the second round robin matches at the Nitto ATP Finals. Stefanos Tsitsipas (21) takes a 3-1 head-to-head record against reigning champion Alexander Zverev (22) in the evening session. Both players won their opening Group Andre Agassi match. It is the youngest combined age (43.94) in the Nitto ATP Finals since Andy Murray (22) beat Juan Martin del Potro (21) in a 2009 round robin match. They were a combined age of 43.72.

 In the day session, Rafael Nadal brings a 2-0 head-to-head advantage against Daniil Medvedev. Both players lost their opening matches on Monday. This is their first meeting since Nadal captured his 4th US Open crown and 19th Grand Slam title with a 5-set victory over the Russian on 8 September.

 No. 1 Update: Nadal will finish the season No. 1 in the ATP Rankings IF one of the following occurs: 1) Nadal wins the tournament 2) Nadal makes the Final with 2 round robin wins 3) Nadal makes the Final with 1 round robin win AND Djokovic does not win the tournament 4) Nadal wins at least one round robin match AND Djokovic does not win the tournament 5) Nadal wins 0 round robin matches AND Djokovic does not make the Final

 Nadal, who has qualified 15 straight times for the Nitto ATP Finals, has only lost his first two round robin matches once in eight previous appearances, in 2009 when he went 0-3. Medvedev is seeking the 60th victory of his career-best season (59-19). The 23-year-old Russian is trying to avoid his first three-match losing streak since he lost five straight matches earlier this season from 28 April-12 June.

 Singles Group Andre Agassi semi-final qualification scenarios: TSITSIPAS qualifies for the SFs on Wednesday if: - TSITSIPAS defeats ZVEREV and MEDVEDEV defeats NADAL. OR - TSITSIPAS defeats ZVEREV in 2 sets and NADAL defeats MEDVEDEV in 3 sets.

ZVEREV qualifies for the SFs on Wednesday if: - ZVEREV defeats TSITSIPAS and NADAL defeats MEDVEDEV. OR - ZVEREV defeats TSITSIPAS in 2 sets and MEDVEDEV defeats NADAL in 3 sets.

 Big 3 Success: Zverev, who has posted wins over the Big 3 in his last three matches at the Nitto ATP Finals going back to last year’s semi-finals, is the first player to beat this trio in the tournament and 27th overall to accomplish the feat. MONDAY FAST FACTS

• Fifteen-time Nitto ATP Finals qualifier Rafael Nadal meets defending champion Alexander Zverev after Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas make their respective tournament debuts against one another. Nadal is 5-0 against Zverev and Medvedev is 5-0 against Tsitsipas entering play at The O2 on Monday.

• Regardless of Novak Djokovic’s results this week, Nadal will clinch the year-end No. 1 ranking for a fifth time if he reaches the final with a 4-0 record. The Spaniard went 4-0 to reach the final in 2010 and 2013.

• Though Nadal has qualified 15 straight times for the year-end championships, he’s only made eight prior appearances due to injuries. The World No. 1 seeks his second title in 29 tournaments on indoor hard courts. His lone title came at 2005 ATP Masters 1000 Madrid. That event moved from hard to clay in 2009.

• Nadal has not finished a tournament since winning the US Open title. He withdrew from ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai (left hand) and conceded a walkover in the ATP Masters 1000 Paris semi-finals (abdominal).

• Zverev will attempt to defeat the top-ranked player for the second straight season at The O2. He upset then-No. 1 Djokovic to capture the biggest of his 11 career titles at the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals. Zverev’s lone title this year came at Geneva in May. He is the only player in this year’s field without multiple titles in 2019.

• Medvedev is seeking the 60th victory of his breakout season. The 23-year-old Russian has won all five of his prior meetings with Tsitsipas, including his first straight-set victory over the Greek in the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai semi-finals on 12 October. One day later, Medvedev defeated Zverev to capture the title.

• One year and one day ago, Tsitsipas defeated Alex de Minaur for the Next Gen ATP Finals championship. In 2019, the 21-year-old Greek graduated to the Nitto ATP Finals and earned wins over Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer. Tsitsipas is the youngest of the 26 players to have defeated all three members of the Big 3.

• Four of the eight competitors at the Nitto ATP Finals are under the age of 24 for the first time in 10 years. o 2019: Stefanos Tsitsipas (21), Alexander Zverev (22), Matteo Berrettini (23), Daniil Medvedev (23) o 2009: Juan Martin del Potro (21), Novak Djokovic (22), Andy Murray (22), Rafael Nadal (23)

• Doubles play in Group Max Mirnyi begins on Monday with three teams that combined for the four Grand Slam championships in 2019, as well as the only former Nitto ATP Finals champions in the doubles field.

• Roland Garros champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies make their tournament debut against 2015 ATP Finals champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau. Rojer is competing at his sixth year-end championships. He’s won a match in only one of his prior appearances (5-0 in 2015, 0-12 in 4 other years).

• Wimbledon and US Open champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, who have clinched year- end No. 1, will open against Australian Open champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

 This is also the first time since 2003 the Top 5 players in the ATP Rankings all have won at least four ATP Tour level titles during the season with Djokovic (5), Dominic Thiem (5), Federer (4), Medvedev (4) and Nadal (4).

 The Big 3 of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are among the Top 3 seeds together in the year-end championship for the fourth time (2007, 2009-10). They were also in the Top 3 coming into the tournament on three other occasions (2008, 2014, 2018) but Nadal withdrew.

 No. 1 Scenarios: Djokovic must reach the final for a chance to be year-end No. 1. Here is a look: = 2 RR Wins + SF Win + Nadal earns 0 RR wins. = 3 RR Wins + SF Win + Nadal only earns 0-1 RR wins. = 1 RR Win + SF Win + Final Win + Nadal only earns 0-2 RR wins. = 2 RR Wins + SF Win + Final Win + Nadal does not reach final with 3-4 wins. = 3 RR Wins + SF Win + Final Win + Nadal does not reach final with 4 wins.

FORMER CHAMPIONS FEDERER, DJOKOVIC HEADLINE OPENING DAY

 Two players with the most titles in Nitto ATP Finals history kick off the year-end championship on Sunday when six-time champion Roger Federer takes on Dominic Thiem and five-time winner Novak Djokovic plays first-time qualifier Matteo Berrettini in Group Bjorn Borg action. Federer is the all-time titles leader in tournament history while Djokovic is tied for second-most with Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras. This is the third time (2013, 2015) Djokovic and Federer are in the same group and on the previous two occasions the Serb went on to win the title. Federer was a semi-finalist in 2013 and finalist in 2015.

 In the opening singles match, Djokovic and Berrettini square off for the first time. This is the 12th time in the past 13 years (except 2017) Djokovic has qualified for the year-end championship. He is tied (w/Sampras) for No. 4 in tournament history with 35 wins and with a victory he will tie former coach Boris Becker for No. 3 on the all-time tournament wins list (36). Djokovic is 10-1 in opening round robin matches, winning 10 in a row since his only loss to David Ferrer in his 2007 debut. The 23-year-old Berrettini is the first Italian player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in singles since Corrado Barazzutti in 1978. Adriano Panatta was the first Italian to compete at the season finale in 1975 Stockholm. Both players went 0-3 in round robin competition. Berrettini made the biggest improvement in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings from last year, jumping 46 spots from No. 54 to No. 8.

 In the evening session, Federer and Thiem meet for the seventh time. Thiem owns a 4-2 head-to-head record against Federer, winning both meetings in three sets (from a set down) this season in the final at ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells and QFs at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid. Federer’s last win over the Austrian came one year ago at the Nitto ATP Finals in the second round robin match. Federer, 38, is the oldest player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals and holds tournament records for titles (6), finals (10), semi-finals (15), appearances (17) and wins (57). Federer is 12-4 in opening matches and last year lost to Nishikori in his first match. Thiem is making his 4th straight visit to the Nitto ATP Finals (3-6) and he is looking to win his first opening match (0-3).

 Thiem, who is one of 74 players to face Federer at least six times, is only one of five with a winning record: - Novak Djokovic 26-22 - Rafael Nadal 24-16 - Alexander Zverev 4-3 - Dominic Thiem 4-2 - 4-2

 Doubles play begins in Group Jonas Bjorkman with the opening match between [4] Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury against [5] Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus. This is a first-time meeting. In 2016, Klaasen and Ram teamed together to reach the final at The O2. Salisbury is making his debut. Venus was a semi-finalist in 2017 (w/Harrison). In the evening session, [2] Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo take on [8] Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek, who have won two of the previous three meetings this season. Dodig and Melo reached the final together in 2014 while Kubot and Melo were finalists in 2017. Polasek is making his debut.
